Oh, the 9-to-5 grind. It’s like that reliable old jumper: comfortable, a bit dull, and eventually, it starts to itch. We've all been there, staring out the office window (if you’re lucky enough to have one) dreaming of a life where Monday mornings fill us with joy rather than dread. But here's the kicker - making the leap from daydreaming at your desk to becoming the CEO of your own online business can feel like deciding to skydive without checking you’ve got a parachute. Terrifying, right? But also, oh-so thrilling!

Having been there and done that, my aim is to take the fear of starting up by its horns and wrestle it into submission. If you’ve ever found yourself doodling business logos in a meeting or daydreaming about your passion project during a conference call, you’re in the right place. Starting your dream online business and becoming a soul-led entrepreneur is not only possible but could be the most fulfilling thing you've ever done. And the best part? You don't have to hand in your notice tomorrow. We’re all about taking those baby steps towards big dreams - as outlined in Atomic Habits, all big things come from small beginnings

The first step to starting is understanding what’s blocking us from taking the leap. By understanding the root of our startup fears and conquering them with actionable strategies, little by little, we carve out our path, and the next steps appear, magically, before us.

The monster under the bed: Identifying our fears

For many of us, the thought of starting our own business can sometimes feel like checking for monsters under the bed – you're terrified of what you might find lurking in the back. It's not just the fear of failure that haunts us; it's a cocktail of dread consisting of financial insecurity, the potential of public embarrassment, and the ever-present imposter syndrome whispering, "Who do you think you are?" Understanding these fears is like turning on the light – suddenly, the monster isn't so scary after all. It's just a pile of yesterday's laundry that looked daunting in the dark. Recognising the real face of our anxieties is the first step towards kicking them to the kerb.

The psychology behind the panic

Why do we freeze at the thought of launching our own ventures? It's all thanks to our friendly neighbourhood brain. Evolution has programmed us to seek comfort and avoid risks, making the safe choice of a steady job infinitely more appealing than the unpredictability of entrepreneurship. This inherent aversion to risk can lead to paralysis by analysis situation, where we overthink and underact (hello!). Understanding this natural bias towards safety can help us consciously choose to embrace the discomfort of uncertainty - the breeding ground for innovation and growth.

The misconception of failure

One of the biggest fears of starting up is the fear of failure. Yet, what if we told you that failure is not the nemesis but the mentor? Every successful entrepreneur has a string of failures behind them, each one a lesson leading them closer to their goals (10,000 lightbulbs anyone?) The misconception that failure is the end of the road rather than a pit stop on the journey to success can prevent many of us from even starting. Rebranding failure as feedback changes the game entirely, allowing us to navigate the entrepreneurial waters with a more resilient and adaptive mindset.

The social scarecrow

Finally, let's talk about the fear of judgment and rejection. Starting up often means putting your most passionate ideas out there, and the thought of them being criticized or rejected can be paralyzing. It's like singing your heart out, only to fear being booed off stage. However, the reality is that most people are too caught up in their own lives to devote time to judging others. And those who do take the time? Well, they're not the audience you're catering to.

Overcoming this social scarecrow involves focusing on your target audience's needs and feedback, rather than the background noise of the doubters and naysayers. By understanding and addressing these fears head-on, we can start to dismantle the barriers between us and our entrepreneurial dreams. It's about flipping the script on our anxieties, transforming them from formidable foes to manageable challenges. With each fear faced, we come one step closer to the freedom and fulfillment of running our dream online business.

"Taking the leap to start a small business can be terrifying, but remember, fear is just a sign that you're on the verge of something truly transformative. Embrace it, learn from it, and let it propel you towards your dreams.” – Fiona Turner

Honestly, it's likely not going to be a walk in the park, Kazansky. Procrastination pops up out of nowhere, dry-spells can last days. In my case it took me nearly 6 months to design my own website – and I’m a website designer. There will be days when the comfort of our old jumper seems temptingly easy. But then, we'll remember the itch, the longing for something more fulfilling, and we'll press on. There’s that feeling in the back of our minds, in our hearts, that we believe in the power of dreams and the incredible potential that lies within each of us to create something truly remarkable.

So, let's not wait for 'someday'. The time is now. It's time to sketch those logos into existence, to turn daydreams into detailed business plans. Together, we're stepping into a world where Mondays are met with excitement, and our passions fuel our livelihoods. It's a world that's waiting for you, with all its challenges and triumphs.

Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, a baby step. Let's make that step today. Whether it's drafting your business idea, booking a website designer, or simply joining a community of like-minded dreamers, you're moving closer to your goal. And I can't wait to see where this adventure takes you.
