For many CEO’s December is a time of reflection and intentional goal setting for the business and for themselves. I take myself away every December for a CEO planning getaway where I focus solely on the business goals, I plan how to get there and also lean into what I need to do and who I need to be today in order to meet these goals personally and professionally.
Before you begin thinking about the goals of your business or your personal goals, I invite you to get clear on whether the goals you are setting are actually goals you really care about. You can do this is by asking yourself the question, “How will I feel when I accomplish these goals?”
For example, if you have a personal goal of losing ten pounds, a very common New Year Resolution that statistically has very little follow-through or long-lasting success, if you ask yourself, “How will I feel when I’m ten pounds lighter?” What is the answer? If your answer is, “I won’t feel any different”, then you can pretty much guarantee you won’t lose the ten pounds. This is because this is not a goal that you truly care about achieving based on how you feel when you do. In choosing goals you truly want to reach and will succeed in reaching, it’s important that you connect to a feeling that is different from what you feel now. If you feel energized, healthy, younger, by losing a few extra pounds then you’ll be more likely to achieve your goal because you actually care about achieving it by how you feel and will take the steps needed to reach this goal.
If you are looking to build your business to 6 and 7 figures in the coming year, start connecting to the feelings of what it’s like to serve more community members. Imagine the delight in being able to provide your service, offering or mentorship because you are changing the lives of those who buy from you. Imagine how it feels to have more impact on one person at a time in order to create a global movement or change in humanity. And how would it feel to create more financial freedom in your life so that you can spend more time with your friends and family, or create a foundation and give to the charities of your choice.
By attaching feelings to the goals you are choosing and connecting these feelings to the plan you are designing for your next year, you are more likely to achieve these goals and follow through with the plan. And more importantly you’ll design the,e goals that mean something to you and your business. Reaching the desired outcome which is achieving your goals and having a successful year is possible when you think about these goals and the relationship to how you feel when accomplishing them.
And next year when you take yourself away for your CEO planning getaway, you’ll be able to collect the data on how many of these goals you’ve achieved, which always fuels next year’s goals for more success. I’ve created a goal-setting workbook for 2022 to support you in getting clarity around what you care about, what your goals are, and how to stay accountable.
