Close your eyes and think back to who you were fifteen years ago. If you’re old enough, you may have to go back further.

Do you remember what you were like before you learned the hard lessons that have shaped the wise person you are today?

If you could go back in time and tell that person a thing or two, what would you say? Can you think of anything? If you can, you should consider writing a book.

Maybe you have survived some serious hardship. Or maybe you have put in long hours to learn a skill, only to realize that it could have been done in half the time if only you’d known what was truly important.

All of this is intellectual property for your future book.

A confession: I love two things (at least): Truth, and Books.

Truth

There is nothing more sacred to me than the truth. As a person of faith, I could say there is nothing more sacred to me than God, but I would be saying the same thing in a different way. In a world where truth has been on the docket, disparaged, spurned, and even ridiculed, it is more important than ever for those of us who believe there is such a thing to start talking and defending it.

I put truth into two categories: axiomatic truth which provides us with fundamental principles, and truth which is less important, but true nonetheless. Axioms are not to be trifled with. Murder is bad. 2+2 is always 4. Gravity is a constant. Private property should be protected.

Less important truths are still pretty darned important.

“Aunt Jan came by yesterday at 7pm.”

“The meat has been sitting out for four hours.”

“The girl is wearing a purple shirt.”

I say these are important because all truth is important. It is important because reality is reality, no matter how much we deny it or try to falsify it, evasion kills. Deception kills. Dishonesty is a grievous sin because it warps reality, and the one who is duped by dishonesty is the one who loses–maybe even her life.

Your Truth

Sometimes when people talk about “my truth,” “his truth,” and “her truth” what they mean is that truth is relative. I don’t mean that. When I say “your truth” I mean “the truth that is the truth you are supposed to be out telling,” which brings me to the second thing I love: books.

Books are a time-tested way to relay truth. I have lived an interesting life that has shaped me, but I’ve been shaped at least as much by the books I’ve read. I was once captivated by this quote, and it has never lost its grip on me:

For books to get through to us, they have to first be written.

If you write your book, it might be bad. It might contain erroneous thinking. If so, you’ll find out and you can fix it.

But it might turn out to be a great book. You might learn something you didn’t know you knew as you write. After all, writing is a mysterious way of finding out what you know. Most of all, your truth as you tell it from your perspective, might be the life-changing truth that someone needs to read so they can grow and go out and change the world because of what they learned from you.

We need all the books that God may be inspiring, so please, go write.
