Recognizing the signs: When my body started speaking

What if your greatest illness became the gateway to your deepest healing? Eight years ago, I was lost in the shadows of Graves' disease, but my journey through sound healing and spiritual alignment transformed my life. Here’s how I found light in the darkest of places.

Before my healing journey began, I never imagined that my life would take the path it has. At the time, I was navigating life through a haze of exhaustion, confusion, and fear. My body felt foreign to me—betrayed by an autoimmune disorder called Graves' disease. The physical symptoms were challenging, but the emotional weight was far heavier. I felt lost, disconnected from my own body, and unsure of where to turn.

The first signs that something wasn't right with my body began when I started randomly passing out. At first, I brushed it off as dehydration from being in hot clubs and under the influence. But when I collapsed after a shower, my body uncontrollably shutting down, I realized how dangerous this was becoming. The fear of potentially breaking my neck in that fall haunted me. My body was overheating, and I felt like I was losing control.

As the episodes increased, I started noticing how weak I had become. I had lost weight, felt constantly exhausted, and struggled to keep up with simple walks. Friends and family didn't always take me seriously, and that dismissiveness hurt. I remember a particular moment when I went out to celebrate my cousin's birthday. I wasn't feeling well, but no one truly listened. When I collapsed during a walk, my mom looked concerned, and I knew I had to tell her what had been going on. My cousins laughed, thinking I had simply tripped. That moment broke me; I felt invisible, misunderstood, and completely lost.

The turning point: Collapsing in the hallway

The breaking point came when I ended up in the ER, desperate for answers. Despite my high blood pressure and the obvious signs of distress, the doctor brushed me off, attributing my symptoms to being under the influence. The dismissal was devastating. I knew something was deeply wrong, but my voice wasn’t being heard.

The next day, after struggling through brunch with friends, I collapsed again, this time unable to move. My roommate had to carry me into the house, and my friend rushed me back to the hospital. This time, when I collapsed in the hallway and injured my knee, the medical team finally took me seriously. Tests revealed a mass around my chest and heart, fluid in my lungs, and critically high blood pressure. My body was shutting down, and I felt like I was trapped in a nightmare.

Facing my fears: A week in the hospital

The scariest moment came when doctors had to administer a medicine that stopped my heart for 3 to 5 seconds. Being flipped upside down, surrounded by nurses with a defibrillator ready, I felt my heart slow, terrifyingly close to stopping. It was a moment of complete surrender, a brush with mortality that shook me to my core.

That week in the hospital was the longest and hardest of my life. It was filled with endless tests, CAT scans, blood work, and medications. I was strapped to IVs and a heart monitor, and I needed a walker just to take a few steps. My parents never left my side, sleeping in uncomfortable hospital chairs. My brother, who has since transitioned, would sleep beside me in the hospital bed, offering comfort in a way only he could. The unwavering support of my family and friends was the light in that dark time. Watching them worry and witnessing how my illness impacted them added another layer of pain. I felt stripped of everything I knew.

Looking out the hospital window, I longed to feel the sun on my skin, to take a simple walk, to breathe freely. In that moment, I made a vow to never take the simple gifts of life, like sunshine, fresh air, and my body, for granted again. The diagnosis of Graves' disease became both a curse and a catalyst, a moment of death and rebirth.

In an article titled “Top ways to reduce daily stress,” Dr. Ramchandani from Harvard Health mentions, “Music therapy can be very powerful for healing, and it is used in medical settings for everything from cancer treatment to recovering from COVID-19.” Another article, “Can music improve our health and quality of life?” discusses how music boosts mood and well-being, stating, “Music boosts our mood and well-being, and music therapy may help during treatments for certain health conditions.” These insights affirmed my path, as sound healing became a powerful tool in my recovery.

The power of sound healing and spiritual alignment

This experience marked the beginning of my true healing journey. I started with what I could control: food as medicine, and expanded into energy work and spiritual healing. My aunt, an intuitive coach, guided me as I learned how to heal not only my body but also my mind and spirit. Sound healing became a powerful tool, helping me clear stagnant energy and rediscover myself.

A message for those on their healing journey

My message to anyone who feels lost in their healing journey is this: You are not alone. Healing is not linear, and it is not always easy, but it is possible. Your story is still being written, and every step forward is a chapter of growth, love, and light. The journey to recovery was really hard, but every challenge brought me closer to the light. I am here to walk with you, to hold space for your journey, and to remind you that no matter where you are, healing is within reach.
