When I was growing up, I told everyone I wanted to be a parapsychologist, so I could study the unknown realms.
I was fascinated by psychic experiences, such as clairvoyance, telepathy, and remote viewing, and I wanted to scientifically study these experiences. This career choice surprised most of the adults in my life. I learned from their blank stares and discomfort that this was an unusual choice for an 8-year-old.
Flash forward many years, and I dropped the “para” and followed a more traditional path of studying clinical psychology. Even though I tried, I could not “turn off” my own intuition or my interest in understanding what we cannot see.
Do you consider yourself an intuitive person too?
I believe that we’re all intuitive, and we can choose to ignore it or to foster it.
If you identify as an intuitive person, I’m guessing you’ve also received subtle, intuitive information throughout your life. This might feel like a nudge to reach out to someone or a gut feeling to hold off on pursuing an opportunity that just doesn’t feel right.
For many of us that are naturally intuitive, you may not even realize that many of your life choices were guided by your intuitive wisdom, and you rely on this inner navigation system without even realizing it’s your intuition that is guiding you.
Let’s explore a little deeper.
Have you experienced an intuitive hunch as you were building your business?
Did you follow up on your hunch? What happened?
Have you experienced an intuitive hunch in your personal life?
Did you act on it? What happened?
Allow yourself time to reflect on these experiences in an open, calm, and non-judgmental way. This exercise is a great way to bring awareness to how you’ve been interacting with your intuition in the past.
I’ve carried my interest in intuition with me as I grew my business and coached hundreds of clients. In my experience, there are two key factors that entrepreneurs struggle with when using intuition in their business. First, they aren’t sure how to connect with their intuition and worry that the information they’re receiving is from their “thinking mind,” which is affected by fear, doubt, and worry. Secondly, they struggle to trust the information, which holds them back from ACTING on what they receive.
In order to tackle the first problem, let’s explore how your intuition communicates with you.
Intuition may connect with you through a variety of ways, such as visual images, words or phrases, waves of emotion, song lyrics, a gut feeling of “just knowing,” ideas or inspiration that unexpectedly pop into your mind, or physical sensations. Most of us will receive intuitive messages through many different routes, but we often have a primary way that we receive information. Notice how you initially receive intuitive information and pay attention to any patterns that emerge. For example, I’m a very visual person, so I tend to receive a lot of my intuitive information through images in my mind’s eye. All ways of receiving intuitive information are equally helpful and working with your intuition will strengthen each mode of communication.
One of the most important things you can do to strengthen your intuition is to drop into your body and out of your head. Get familiar with your body – how does it feel? What does it need? What sensations are you having? Start to notice your physical sensations or bodily responses in different situations and around various people. How do you feel in the presence of this person that you’ve just met? How does it feel when you hop on the phone with a potential new client – are you tired, energized, constricted, happy? It’s important to feel what is happening in your body as you work to shift out of “living from the neck up” and relying too much on your mind to give you the answers.
For those of us who are entrepreneurs, I’ll share a great way to weave together your business strategy and intuitive wisdom. As you and I both know, there are endless ways to grow a business and many worthwhile strategies.
But, which way is best for you? That is a question for your intuition.
For example, let’s say you’d like to hit a 10K month in your business. We all know there are many possible routes to this goal. In order to tap into your inner wisdom, allow yourself to get into a quiet space, take several deep breaths, and close your eyes. Ask yourself, “I am ready for 10K months, what do I need to know about getting there? What would be the best way for me to reach this goal? What do I need to know or do to make the path to 10K months easy for me?” Write down any impressions that come up for you, such as phrases, words, music lyrics, images, or a person that pops into your mind. With a non-judgmental approach, capture anything that came up for you. What was the first way you received information? Did you see an image or color? Did you feel something in your body? Did you hear/see a word, phrase, or song? Notice how your intuition speaks to you.
Don’t worry if the information doesn’t immediately make sense. It might not be clear right away, so your task is to not analyze it and just capture the information as it comes through.
If you’re not sure why you’re getting certain information, ask clarifying questions to see if you can receive additional information. Also, allow yourself to notice what pops into your mind throughout the day, as your intuition continues to connect with you.
Now, let’s tackle the most important part of intuitive development, which involves trusting the information you receive and taking action. This approach requires us to conceptualize business building (and life!) as a series of experiments.
Let’s say that during the intuitive exercise above, a former colleague popped into your mind in response to the question. You have two choices. You can talk yourself out of the information that you receive and decide that it was meaningless OR you can take this information as important and follow the nudge. This might look like reaching out to your former colleague to catch up, sending them an email, or connecting with them via social media. You might be surprised to find out where this leads you. Perhaps this former colleague just started a podcast and is looking for guests or maybe they are interested in partnering together to host a workshop and they were looking for someone with exactly your expertise. It’s possible this former colleague will introduce you to someone who could be a wonderful and consistent referral source for your business. The possibilities are endless, but you won’t get a chance to explore any of them without taking action.
Are you ready to try it?
I’d encourage you to intentionally bring your intuition into your business development. Notice how your business shifts and changes as you do. Treat yourself to a new, beautiful notebook where you write down your intuitive impressions, which ones you’ve acted on, and how it turned out. You might be surprised with how fast your business growth accelerates when you tap into the flow of the universe.
Embrace the belief that the universe is working FOR you. As you step into creating an intuitively guided business, your personal growth and business success ripples out into the world.
Business building offers us a unique opportunity to not only create financial success but also to cultivate psychological, spiritual, and personal growth. Let’s start the adventure.
