Jenni Schmelz works with sound and vibration to catalyze shifts in her clients that spark meaningful change in their lives. Whether in a Sound Bath Meditation, a Vibrational Sound Therapy, or a Biofield Tuning Session, she works to shift energy in and around the body that starts the process of changing the human experience and perception of life.

Group Sound Meditations can be grouped under many names, including Sound Baths, Gong Baths, Group Sound Therapy, or Group Sound Healing. Regardless of the name, the purpose remains the same: to create a shared experience where participants come together to immerse themselves in soothing and therapeutic sounds. Facilitators generate frequencies and vibrations to help shift brainwaves from an active state to a more relaxed, meditative state, promoting deep relaxation and inner balance.

Participants typically lie down on mats, blankets, and pillows for comfort, though sitting comfortably in a chair is also an option for those who prefer or need it. Group Sound Meditations can take place in a variety of settings, including homes, yoga studios, conferences, and events both indoors and outdoors, making them accessible to many different environments and occasions.
I personally prefer the term Sound Bath Meditation because it truly reflects its meditative nature. This form of deep relaxation and meditation does not require prior meditation experience or the need to learn a specific technique or method. The only requirement is finding a Sound Bath Meditation experience that resonates with you. Once you’re there, simply relax and allow the sounds to guide you. Additionally, Sound Bath Meditations are not directly associated with any particular religion, cultural traditions, or other spiritual practices. Sound Bath Meditations are for anyone, regardless of their religious beliefs, cultural background, spiritual practices, or meditation experience.
To begin, participants are often guided into relaxation through gentle breath work, a short meditation, or gentle yoga, helping to quiet the mind and prepare the body for the experience. The facilitator introduces sound and vibration using Himalayan and crystal bowls, gongs, chimes, bells, flutes, or any other instruments. As these resonant frequencies fill the space, a unique and immersive sound journey begins. The prolonged exposure to soothing sounds and vibrations not only promotes deep relaxation but can also help release tension, reduce stress, and, for some, induce much-needed rest or even sleep. Each session offers a unique experience, allowing participants to surrender to the power of a Sound Bath Meditation.
As participants are encouraged to simply follow the sounds it is suggested to observe any thoughts in the mind or sensations in the body. By acutely tuning into a combination of tones, the mind and body can quickly shift to a state of calm. With regular attendance, Sound Bath Meditations can provide the same benefits as silent meditation. In my own experience, I struggled with silent meditation for years. However, the practice of attending a Sound Bath Meditation in my area helped facilitate profound changes in my mind, body, and spirit. Over time, I found that this practice not only deepened my connection to meditation but also trained me to achieve deep relaxation, calmness, and a heightened state of self-awareness. Today, I am able to meditate in silence, as the transformative power of Sound Bath Meditation has shifted my ability to be in a more constant daily state of mindfulness and peace.
The collective energy of a group, whether large or small, often amplifies the peaceful atmosphere of a Sound Bath Meditation. Being in a shared space, with a collective intention of relaxation, fosters a unified sense of connection while also providing a supportive environment for each individual to have their own personal experience. The shared experience often extends beyond just relaxation; it can become a social event where like-minded individuals gather, creating an opportunity to meet others with similar interests and explore connections within a community of wellness.
Let’s take a closer look at the mechanics of the benefits of Sound Bath Meditations. These meditative sound experiences can have a profound effect on the brain, body, and spirit. Below, we’ll explore how Sound Bath Meditations work to support deep relaxation, emotional balance, and more.
As mentioned above, the Sound Bath Meditation experience aims to shift brainwaves from the more active beta state to a more relaxed alfa or theta state. Beta waves are typically associated with wakeful consciousness, logical thinking, and problem-solving. Most adults spend most of their day in the beta state, so transitioning into alfa or theta during a Sound Bath Meditation can be a very welcome reprieve. The alpha state is slower than the beta, promoting relaxation while still maintaining alertness. This shift encourages the Autonomic Nervous System to shift towards the parasympathetic system, lowering stress levels and promoting emotional balance. In Alfa, you’ll also potentially experience heightened imagination and intuition, improved memory and learning, calmness, and creative thinking. Theta is even slower than alpha and brings an even deeper restful feeling to the body and mind. Many of the characteristics of this state are shared with the alpha, but in this state, deep insight and creativity, as well as a sense of spiritual connection, may emerge. Throughout a Sound Bath Meditation, participants often move between these states, experiencing the full range of benefits.
Relaxation through meditation can help shift the autonomic nervous system from the sympathetic fight or flight response to the parasympathetic state, which supports rest, recovery, and energy conservation. In today’s fast-paced work, however, our autonomic nervous system often struggles to return to its rest and digest state, which is crucial for well-being. Chronic stress, fueled by constant worry and the ongoing fight or flight mode, disrupts the natural balance needed for optimal health. Activating the relaxation response is key to restoring that balance, and attending a Sound Bath Meditation offers a simple, pleasant way to incorporate relaxation into your life. This practice can help train the body to enter these relaxed states more easily, ultimately breaking the destructive cycle of stress.
Relaxation techniques such as Sound Bath Meditations can regulate stress hormones, lower heart rate and blood pressure, and restore balance to the body and mind due to the shifting of the autonomic nervous system to the parasympathetic state. Participants of Sound Bath Meditations may also report the release of muscle tension, improved sleep, increased focus, and enhanced mental clarity.
Regular relaxation and meditation may increase the threshold for emotional response, making it easier to manage and control reactions to external stressors. With continued practice, deep relaxation supports the release of endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine neurotransmitters that boost mood and reduce anxiety. They are also suggested to promote an overall sense of well-being. This biochemical shift, due to repeated practices of deep relaxation and meditation, not only enhances emotional resilience but also may improve the ability to respond more calmly to life’s challenges.
Like other kinds of meditation, Sound Bath Meditations can deepen our internal awareness and connection to ourselves. By learning to become more present in the moment and attuned to our surroundings, we can shift our perceptions to bring greater peace and clarity to our personal lives. Fostering a more balanced and positive mindset over time can lead to profound changes in the experience and perception of one’s life.
As you discover a Sound Bath Meditation in your area that resonates with you, weekly sessions can help relieve the symptoms of chronic stress, offering a valuable opportunity for a mental and physical reset. For those seeking deeper healing, attending more than once a week can enhance the process, providing powerful support alongside other treatments. Even if you’re only able to attend once a month, a dedicated getaway to a Sound Bath Meditation can help you reconnect, leaving you with a sense of well-being, peace, and balance. By incorporating Sound Bath Meditations into your wellness routine, you can cultivate a practice that nurtures positivity and stability in your life.
