When I started working as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), I had a vision of a career centered around helping clients navigate the complexities of their mental health. What I didn't expect was that my path would lead me to entrepreneurship–a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey. Transitioning from counselor to entrepreneur wasn't just about changing professions; it was about using the principles of positive psychology to create a business that empowers others.

The accidental entrepreneur: How a class assignment sparked a business

During a business development class as part of my doctoral studies in consulting psychology, I had a turning point in my career. The final assignment was to develop a comprehensive marketing plan. Instead of just completing the task and moving on, I saw it as an opportunity to create something impactful. I decided to use TikTok, a platform known for its engaged audience, to share insights on mental health, personal development, and the entrepreneurial journey. By leveraging an influencer marketing strategy, I turned my content into a product, identified my target audience, monetized via social media, and increased brand recognition. What started as a class project quickly evolved into a full-fledged business. Since then, I have involved my early supporters in the product development process, helping shape curricula and additional revenue streams.


The power of positive psychology in entrepreneurship

As I shifted from counseling to entrepreneurship, I realized that the principles of positive psychology were just as applicable in business as they were in therapy. Positive psychology, which focuses on what makes life fulfilling, emphasizes strengths, resilience, and positive emotions–qualities that are crucial for any entrepreneur.


Research has demonstrated that positive psychology interventions (PPIs) are particularly effective in improving well-being and performance in organizational settings. Meyers, van Woerkom, and Bakker (2013) emphasize that PPIs can reduce stress and burnout while enhancing employee well-being, which is vital in a high-pressure environment like entrepreneurship. Similarly, Bolier et al. (2013) found that PPIs have small but significant effects on subjective and psychological well-being, indicating their long-term effectiveness.


Coaching for entrepreneurs: A strategic advantage

One of the most significant insights from my journey was the value of coaching. Entrepreneurs face unique challenges such as long hours, high stress, and the pressure to succeed. Evidence-based coaching has proven to be a powerful tool for improving both well-being and performance. According to Hinkelmann and colleagues (2024), coaching can significantly improve entrepreneurs' solution-focused thinking, hope, and psychological well-being. This research provided the backbone for my approach to business. By focusing on my strengths and maintaining a positive mindset, I navigated the inevitable challenges of entrepreneurship with resilience and optimism.


In my own experience, coaching played a pivotal role in helping me refine my business strategy, manage stress, and maintain a positive outlook. By working with a coach, I could stay focused on my goals and overcome obstacles that might have otherwise derailed my progress.


Building a community: The importance of connection

Throughout my entrepreneurial journey, I found unexpected joy in the community I built. TikTok wasn't just a platform for sharing content; it became a space for meaningful connections and support. By involving my audience in the process – from product development to feedback – I created a sense of shared purpose that fueled my business growth.


Research supports the importance of community in entrepreneurship. Kotte et al. (2021) emphasize that social support and connectedness are crucial for entrepreneurial success. Building a community around your business enhances your well-being and creates a loyal customer base that feels invested in your success.

  3. Apply positive psychology: Focus on your strengths, cultivate positive emotions, and maintain a growth mindset. These principles will help you stay resilient and motivated, even when the going gets tough.

  4. Seek out coaching: Don’t underestimate the value of coaching. A good coach can help you stay focused, set realistic goals, and navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship.

  5. Document the process: Keep track of your journey, not just for yourself but for others who might be inspired by your story. Sharing your experiences builds trust and credibility with your audience.

Entrepreneurship wasn't something I planned for, but it's a path I'm grateful to have taken. If you're considering a similar leap, remember that the journey is as important as the destination. By applying the principles of positive psychology, building a supportive community, and staying true to your passion, you can create a business that not only thrives but also makes a meaningful impact.
