Kyle Gillette, Mindset Coach
Introduce yourself! Please tell us about you and your life, so we can get to know you better. (Feel free to share your hobbies, your passions, family life, pets, and anything that makes you unique.)
I’m Kyle Gillette. I was born and raised on an Orange Farm in CA, where I began my work journey at 13. Working for my dad and learning the work ethic of being a farmer helped me to do what I do now. I currently reside in WA with my wife and three daughters.
We focus our time as a family on school, soccer, church, and finding time to go hike, bike, or exercise in some way or another. It rains a lot in the Pacific Northwest, so as soon as that sun comes out (and sometimes in the rain), we get out there.
I’m currently training to hike to the top of Mt Shasta, which is a 14,000+ foot mountain in CA. That has been a great experience. My kids are in a total immersion Spanish program, and it’s been fun learning Spanish along with them.
As to my career, I’ve done various jobs, including pruning orange trees, irrigation work in the fields, working in a men’s mentoring program for several years, and running a pet resort. Until I opened my coaching practice, I was focused on doing HR work in a megachurch. These experiences working with people and customers have led me to my passion for helping people with their mindsets and habits, so they can become the leaders they are meant to be.
Tell us about a pivotal moment in your life that brought you to where you are today.
In 2009, I was in a motorcycle accident that I somehow walked away from. I was riding in a new residential development that had a beautiful view of the pacific ocean and was in an area that was primarily pastureland. It was spring, so the field was beautiful and green, and it was early in the morning, so the ocean looked beautiful. No houses were being built at the time, but the roads were perfectly paved. After enjoying the ocean view at the top of the development, I hopped back on my motorcycle to head home.
After a couple of turns, I realized I was going way too fast for a residential area and glanced down to see I was going 50 MPH; when I looked up, there was a hill coming with a curve that I didn’t expect. As I locked up my brakes, I realized things would not end well.
I hit a curb, and then the next thing I knew, my legs were wrapped up in the barbed wired fence, and I had been knocked unconscious. After a moment or two to untangle my legs, I looked to my left to see my bike’s motor just 12 inches from my head. My body and potentially my life had been spared that day.
This incident helped me know God had more for my life. I had more to contribute to the world. I didn’t know what it was at the time. Slowly but surely, that mission became apparent and eventually became the SAGE Leadership Framework.
What is your business name, and how do you help your clients?
After years of work in the men’s mentoring program and moving to the pacific northwest, clarity around my mission has become more apparent. As the owner of SAGE Mindset Coaching, my mission is to help business owners shift their mindsets and habits to become the leaders they are meant to be.
As a coach to small business owners and leaders, I serve them by helping them discover how to be people-first leaders and leverage the power of the SAGE Leadership Framework in all that they do.
SAGE is an acronym I use to describe my leadership framework. If you think of your leadership as a house, the S in SAGE is self-awareness. This is the foundation of outstanding leadership. The A is accountability. Accountability is represented by the nails that hold your leadership house together.
The G is a growth mindset. This is the idea that all SAGE Leaders maintain a mindset of growth and abundance. This is represented by the walls and roof of your leadership house. As leaders grow, they need to remodel their leadership, create an addition, and (breaking the metaphor) blow off the roof of their leadership to influence and lead more people. Finally, we have the E, which is empowerment. This is represented by the windows and doors in a SAGE Leader’s house. This is how those they will lead see into their leadership and step into it. It is also where those they lead look out and see the opportunities they have for them, and they are empowered to begin building their leadership house in earnest as they step out on their own.
Ultimately, my clients are empowered to build their leadership in each of these four areas through powerful coaching conversations and the accountability my coaching provides.
What kind of audience do you target your business towards?
Because of how SAGE has been designed, I focus on small business owners who want a thinking partner to help them. The best clients are service-based business owners who put people first in their work but are struggling with the overwhelm of the day-to-day and get stuck on certain decisions, habits, and mindsets that limit their effectiveness, the team’s empowerment, and growth of their business.
What would you like to achieve for yourself and your business in the future?
There are too many business owners who feel alone on an island as entrepreneurs. My goal is to help thousands of business owners become SAGE Leaders and develop a community of leaders who empower one another and grow together to achieve far more than they thought was possible on their own.
What are your current goals for your business?
Currently, I am getting ready to publish my SAGE Leadership book and its corresponding app and course. But most importantly, my goal is to help my current clients become SAGE Leaders and transform their lives, teams, and businesses.
Who inspires you to be the best that you can be?
Ultimately, I am responsible to Jesus and living this life as fully as possible to honor him. Additionally, being an example to my three young daughters of what hard work and dedication looks like continues to inspire me every day.
What is your work inspired by?
My work is inspired by the moments of “aha” that I see in my clients every day and how this translates into new opportunities, mindsets, and habits that help them be the leaders they are meant to be.
I’ve watched my clients double their revenue, hire an entire team to support them, and quit their jobs.
These courageous actions inspire me to become the best coach I can be and help them on their journey to becoming SAGE Leaders!
