Let’s start with your background. What inspired you to pursue a career in naturopathic and classical Chinese medicine?
My journey began with a deep passion for holistic health and a desire to help others achieve optimal well-being. Growing up, I saw how conventional medicine often overlooked the mind-body connection. This led me to explore naturopathic and classical Chinese medicine, both of which emphasize treating the whole person rather than just symptoms. These disciplines align perfectly with my philosophy of health and healing.
The birth of gem health: A vision for women’s wellness
What led you to establish Gem Health, and how does it reflect your approach to holistic health?
Gem Health was born out of a vision to provide personalized, comprehensive care to women who are often juggling multiple responsibilities and struggling with their health. My goal is to empower these women to take charge of their well-being through evidence-based, natural interventions. At Gem Health, we focus on addressing the root causes of health issues, whether it’s through nutrition, lifestyle changes, herbal medicine, or stress management techniques.
Breaking the burnout cycle: Challenges high-achievers face
Your clientele is quite specific—type A, health-conscious, success-minded women. What challenges do these women typically face, and how do you help them overcome these challenges?
Many of my clients are high achievers who strive for excellence in every aspect of their lives. However, this can often lead to burnout, hormonal imbalances, and metabolic issues. They might experience fatigue, weight gain, or mood swings, which can be frustrating when they’re doing everything “right” but still not feeling their best. I help them by creating tailored health plans that fit their busy lifestyles. We work on optimizing their energy, improving their metabolism, and balancing their hormones naturally, so they can thrive without unnecessary interventions or the trial-and-error approach that often leads to overwhelm.
If she can do it, so can you: A transformative success story
Can you share a particularly inspiring success story from your practice?
Absolutely. An RN in her mid-40s came to me last year to address fatigue and weight gain. She had tried everything—seen her PCP, worked with various alternative providers, and coaches—but her energy wouldn’t pick up and she couldn’t lose weight. Despite doing everything "right," she didn’t sleep well and was struggling with a poor quality of life, which affected her relationships at home. She felt stuck and frustrated.
When she came to me, we took a step-by-step approach. We started by addressing her stress levels, which had a profound impact on her sleep quality. With better sleep, she finally began to get the rest she needed. Once her sleep improved, we turned our attention to her digestion and detoxification. By working on these foundational aspects in the right order, she began to lose excess weight more easily. The holistic approach we used brought everything together and provided the lasting transformation she was looking for. It was incredible to see her regain her vitality and overall well-being by addressing each piece of the puzzle methodically.
Dispelling myths: The truth about natural medicine
What are some common misconceptions about naturopathic and classical Chinese medicine that you’d like to address?
One major misconception is that natural medicine is about finding the right pill to cure a symptom, similar to allopathic approaches. In reality, it’s about supporting the whole person and every system, allowing the body to restore balance naturally. It’s a blend of cutting-edge science and ancient health wisdom that creates lasting change. Every part of a treatment plan works together to support overall health, rather than just masking symptoms.
Personal insights: Dr. Chelsea’s own health journey
How do you incorporate your own experiences and personal health journey into your practice and advice for clients?
I’ve been through burnout and the long road to recovery. As a recovering type A entrepreneur, I understand the pull to be hypermasculine in the world to achieve success. However, I maintain practices that allow me to embody the more feminine aspects of receptivity and non-doing, which are crucial for creating balance in the nervous system. When I study, I inquire based on these unique challenges, and when I teach my clients, I bring the embodied versions of what I’ve learned so they can implement them with less trial-and-error and more support.
Starting strong: Tips for your health journey
What advice would you give to women who are just starting their journey towards better energy, metabolism, and hormone balance?
For someone just starting their journey, I’d advise against giving in to the temptation of the “silver bullet” quick fix. It’s natural to feel discouraged when you see all the evidence of what you don’t want at once.
But the body doesn’t heal with quick fixes. The underlying issues will remain if not properly addressed. The master controls of the body—nervous system, hormonal system, immune system—take their inputs from your conscious mind and what you put into your body. Balancing these systems starts with stress regulation and modifying limiting beliefs. This is the first step, and only after this can we dive into gut healing, detox, and hormone balancing. It’s that important.
Fueling passion: Staying motivated and inspiring clients
What keeps you motivated and inspired in your work, and how do you pass that inspiration on to your clients?
I am constantly learning. I love exploring the latest in functional health science and traditional practices, as well as new methods for creating mental state changes and overcoming limiting beliefs. My passion for medicine keeps me motivated. My clients also inspire me—they bring unique challenges, and I love helping them achieve the transformations they desire. What I do is a labor of love, and I’ve always been this passionate about health, even before making it my profession.
The power of mindset: It's all one system
Finally, what role do you think mindset and mental health play in achieving physical health, and how do you address these aspects in your consultations?
Mindset and mentality are the context within which the physical body lives. Your mindset tells your body if it’s safe and capable of overcoming challenges. When we feel unsafe or doubt our ability to recover, the body follows suit. This is why all studies account for the placebo effect—it’s that powerful. I start my work with clients by assessing their stress levels and practices to regulate stress. From there, we work on creating a new, healthier future by addressing the mental and emotional aspects of health alongside the physical.
