The passing of Tito Jackson at the age of 70 marks the end of an era for music lovers and the world at large. As one of the founding members of the Jackson 5, Tito was instrumental in shaping the sounds that defined not just a generation, but global music history. His soulful guitar riffs and vocal harmonies, alongside his brothers, helped the Jackson 5 skyrocket to international fame, becoming icons of Motown and beyond. However, Tito’s legacy extends far beyond his musical accomplishments; he was a man of immense heart, known for his philanthropy, his humility, and his unwavering belief in the power of music to heal and uplift.

For Michael Adam Cohen, who had the unique opportunity to collaborate with Tito on various creative and philanthropic initiatives, the news of his passing has been deeply personal and profoundly emotional. Cohen and Tito bonded over a shared understanding of the transformative potential of music, not just as an art form, but as a vehicle for social change, healing, and empowerment.

Michael Adam Cohen reflected on the life and passing of his friend and collaborator with deep emotion: Michael Adam Cohen: Losing Tito feels like losing a piece of history. He wasn’t just a legendary artist; he was a kind soul, someone who believed in the good in people and worked tirelessly to uplift those around him. His passing is not just a loss for music, but for humanity. I had the privilege of working with him on projects that were incredibly meaningful, and his generosity, his warmth, and his belief in the power of music to change lives left an impression on me that I’ll carry forever.

Michael Adam Cohen: Tito had this way of making everyone feel seen and heard, no matter who they were or what they were going through. We worked together with kids who were struggling with mental health issues, and he had such a calming presence. Music was his tool for healing, and he showed these kids that they could use music to express themselves, to release their emotions, and to feel less alone. That’s the magic of Tito. It wasn’t just about the music—it was about the connection, the love, and the belief in people’s ability to heal.

Cohen spoke fondly of Tito’s humility, despite being part of one of the most famous families in the world. Tito never let fame define him, and he was always more focused on using his platform to give back. Whether through quiet charitable efforts or through his mentorship of young musicians, Tito’s impact was felt far and wide, and often in ways that never made headlines.

Michael Adam Cohen: What people might not know about Tito is just how much he cared about giving back. He didn’t make a big deal out of it, but he was always helping others. Whether it was through music education, charitable work, or just offering guidance to young artists, Tito gave so much of himself to the world. He understood the responsibility that came with his fame, and he used it to help people—especially young people—find their own voices.

Tito’s passing is also a deeply personal loss for Cohen, who viewed Tito not only as a collaborator but as a mentor and a friend. Their work together was grounded in a mutual passion for using music as a tool for social change and personal growth, particularly when it came to helping underprivileged or struggling youth. Cohen recalls how, during their time working together, Tito shared stories about his own experiences growing up in the spotlight and how he used those experiences to help guide the next generation of musicians and artists.

Michael Adam Cohen: Tito was always thinking about the next generation. He had been through so much in his life—growing up in the spotlight, facing the pressures that come with fame—and he wanted to make sure that young people, especially those who were going through tough times, had the support they needed. He had this wisdom that came from a life lived fully, and he was always so generous with his time and his knowledge. I learned so much from him, and I know that countless others did too.

A Heartbreaking Loss: Remembering Tito Jackson: Today marks an incredibly sad and difficult day for me, as I am still in disbelief and heartbroken over the sudden passing of my dear friend, Mr. Toriano Adaryll "Tito" Jackson. I had just spoken with Tito last week, and to hear of his passing at the age of 70 has left me stunned. His family reached out to confirm the tragic news. Although no official cause of death has been released, it is believed that Tito suffered a heart attack while driving from New Mexico to Oklahoma. The timing is especially poignant, as his 71st birthday would have been on October 15, just a month away.

My thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his mother Katherine, his children, his sisters—Janet, Rebbie, LaToya—and his brothers—Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and Randy. This is an evolving story, and the entire Jackson family is in my prayers during this difficult time.

Tito, a founding member of the legendary Jackson 5, played an irreplaceable role in shaping the sound of the group alongside his brothers Michael, Jermaine, Jackie, and Marlon. His contributions to the music industry will always be cherished, and his influence will live on in the hearts of fans worldwide.

He had recently been performing with his brothers Marlon and Jackie as part of The Jacksons and their last performance was just a week ago in England. The band even played at the Fool in Love Festival at Hollywood Park on August 31. Tito was also a talented blues guitarist and had been performing regularly under his own banner and with the B.B. King Blues Band for the last two decades. I had the privilege of working with him on several occasions and will always treasure the moments we spent together, from working on music to attending a few of Janet Jackson’s shows.

Reflecting on mental health and significant life events

In a recent interview, last week Tito & I spoke about the challenges of mental health and the importance of brain wellness, for an upcoming article in Brainz Magazine to be released around his upcoming birthday in October, especially in relation to major events in his life. During the interview, he shared insights into how music had been both a sanctuary and an outlet for him, especially after the loss of his brother, Michael Jackson, in 2009.

Michael Adam Cohen: What role does brain health and mental wellness play in your life, especially considering the intense pressure and tragedies your family has faced over the years?

Tito: Brain health is crucial, and I’ve learned that maintaining mental wellness is just as important as physical wellness, especially after enduring so many ups and downs in life. Losing Michael was incredibly tough for all of us, and it took a lot of emotional strength to push through. I found music was a powerful healing tool, and I made a conscious decision to prioritize my mental health by staying connected to what I love—playing guitar, performing, and spending time with family."

Michael Adam Cohen: Did you develop any specific mind hacks or strategies that helped you navigate difficult moments?

Tito: For me, meditation and mindfulness have been key. Growing up in the spotlight came with its own set of pressures, and over the years, I’ve had to learn how to center myself and focus on the present. When things felt overwhelming, I would take a step back, practice deep breathing exercises, and focus on gratitude. It might sound simple, but it makes a world of difference in how you approach stress and challenging moments.

Michael Adam Cohen: How did these strategies influence your ability to maintain resilience through the major events of your life?

Tito: They were life-saving, honestly. Whether it was during our early years with *The Jackson 5* or later in life after the passing of loved ones, mental resilience became a foundation for moving forward. We’ve faced a lot as a family, but I always try to focus on the positive side of things—what I can be grateful for, what lessons I can take from each experience. That mindset has helped me stay strong."

Tito knew that as one of the quieter members of the Jackson family, his contributions were sometimes overshadowed. However, his humility and grace always shone through, both in his personal and professional life. As Tito once shared in a 2018 interview, "I’ve always been the quietest member of the group, so people make jokes about me... but I’ve come to embrace it, knowing my role was always bigger than what was visible."

His journey with the Jackson 5, and later *The Jacksons*, was one filled with milestones and triumphs, as well as personal struggles. However, through it all, Tito remained a pillar of strength and resilience, not just for his family, but for countless fans around the world who admired his dedication, talent, and grace.

Michael Adam Cohen: What message would you give to those who are going through their own mental health challenges?

Tito: First, don’t ever hesitate to seek help. Whether it’s professional therapy or simply talking to a loved one, it’s important to acknowledge when you need support. Secondly, lean into what gives you peace—whether that’s music, nature, or something else. And finally, practice gratitude daily. It can change your outlook and help you stay strong, no matter what life throws your way."

Tito’s legacy is not only etched in the history of music but also in the hearts of those who valued his wisdom, kindness, and enduring strength. His life serves as a reminder of the importance of both mental and emotional resilience. As we mourn his loss, we celebrate the light he brought to the world, onstage and off.

The bond between Michael and Tito also extended into their shared commitment to mental health advocacy. Both men understood the importance of mental and emotional well-being, particularly in the often high-pressure worlds of music and entertainment. They worked to raise awareness about mental health issues, particularly among young people, encouraging them to use music as a form of therapy and self-expression.

Michael Adam Cohen: Tito and I both believed in the healing power of music. We saw firsthand how it could change lives—how it could give people an outlet to express things they might not have been able to say otherwise. Tito was a huge advocate for mental health awareness, and he always spoke so openly about the challenges that come with being in the public eye, especially for young artists. He wanted to make sure that people understood that it’s okay to not be okay, and that there’s strength in seeking help, in using your creativity to heal.

In reflecting on Tito’s passing, Cohen emphasized the importance of carrying forward the lessons they learned and the work they began together. While Tito may no longer be physically present, his legacy, both as a musician and as a humanitarian, will continue to live on through those who were touched by his life and work.

Michael Adam Cohen: Tito’s spirit will always be with us. He believed so deeply in the power of music to make the world a better place, and that’s something we all need to continue. I know that I’ll carry his memory with me in everything I do, and I’m committed to continuing the work we started together—helping young people, using music as a force for good, and spreading the love and compassion that Tito embodied.

As the world mourns the loss of Tito Jackson, his contributions to music, philanthropy, and humanity are being remembered and celebrated by countless individuals whose lives he touched. Michael Adam Cohen, who worked so closely with him, will undoubtedly continue to honor Tito’s legacy in his own work, ensuring that the lessons, love, and music that Tito shared with the world live on for generations to come.
