Tiffani Teachey Empowers Others To Join The Stem World

Written by: Natasha Lee, Executive Contributor

Executive Contributors at Brainz Magazine are handpicked and invited to contribute because of their knowledge and valuable insight within their area of expertise.

Between the children’s book and women’s empowerment books that Tiffani Teachey has written, there is a common theme of encouragement and perseverance when it comes to representation, especially within girls and underrepresented minorities in the STEM fields. Tiffani’s favorite quote is by Shirley Chisholm, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, then bring your folding chair.” Tiffani’s books speak on what a child can be in STEM and how girls and women can overcome all obstacles in order to unleash the resiliency within. We are honored to introduce you to Tiffani Teachey, author of What Can I Be? STEM Careers from A to Z.

At Brainz Magazine we love interviewing thought leaders and experts like yourself. We are thrilled to gain more STEM knowledge from talking with you today.

Tiffani, what are some of the latest STEM breakthroughs that you are teaching about or that have been under your radar?

Tiffani: The STEM breakthroughs that I am sharing are through my children’s book What Can I Be? STEM Careers from A to Z which is translated in Spanish, French, Swahili, a coloring and activity book, and a teacher’s guide.

I also have a STEMChangeHER subscription box for girls that engages 5–8-year-old girls in themed project activities, STEM books written by or about STEM girls/women, and affirmation cards to build girls confidence while learning about STEM available at STEMChangeHER.com.

What keeps you excited about STEM?

Tiffani: The excitement I feel about STEM is unlike anything else. It’s a game-changer that can make an impact on this world, and it will be the future of our generation!

How has your experience been as a woman engineer?

Tiffani: The profession of engineering has long been considered a male-dominated field in many industries, but it’s interesting to see that there are some aspects where we have made progress and others where the industry still has room for improvement. For example, I’m happy that my career choice allows me the opportunity for both challenges and solutions because these qualities are important no matter what you’re doing!

Women make up only one-third or less, depending on the field you look at; but it is important that we continue to work towards true gender equality so everyone can reap benefits from these skilled professionals who have spent their lives solving problems and making advancements happen!

What can you tell us about some of the most recent work you’re developing, have completed, or is underway?

Tiffani: I’ve been in the energy industry for over seventeen years, which consists of being a part of the design, construction, procurement, engineering, and project management within the energy industry. My next STEM children’s book is underway, which is going to help children learn to explore their creativity and Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM) skills.

What do you hope for in the STEM industry?

Tiffani: Whether you are a kid or an adult, there’s always room for more STEM in many people’s lives. I hope that the STEM industry will improve its diversity and inclusion practices to help build generational wealth while also providing job opportunities through math and science-based careers like engineering! As kids get access early on with STEM education about these fields they can develop skills needed throughout their lives so when it comes time to find themselves working here too — all thanks because of what was taught at home growing up.

I want the STEM industry to create a world where everyone has the opportunity for an exciting and successful career in STEM. As we all know, there is an ever-rich variety of jobs available in these fields; it can help us become better thinkers about our future as well!
