1. Is this part of your vision?
Ask yourself what truly motivates and fulfills you, reflecting on whether your current role aligns with your values and long-term goals. Consider the skills you enjoy using and whether they are central to your desired new path. Reflect on the kind of work environment that energizes you and whether your priorities, such as work-life balance or financial stability, would be impacted. Assess your willingness to take on the risks and challenges of starting anew, and think about how this transition fits into your broader life circumstances and aspirations. Finally, envision where you want to be in the next five to ten years and whether this change brings you closer to that vision.
2. Why do you want change?
Understanding your 'why' is essential when considering a career change, as it clarifies your motivations and helps you make an intentional decision. Reflect on whether dissatisfaction stems from the role itself, the industry, or external factors like company culture or work-life balance. Identify if your desire for change is driven by burnout, a lack of growth, or a longing to pursue a passion. Knowing your 'why' allows you to align your next steps with your values and long-term goals, ensuring a meaningful transition. A clear purpose provides focus and resilience during the challenges of a career shift while setting you up for greater success in creating fulfillment not just in your career but in other aspects of your life.
3. What’s motivating your decision?
Discover what is driving your decision. Are you chasing a long-held passion, seeking personal or professional growth, or simply escaping dissatisfaction in your current role? Understanding whether your motivation is rooted in a desire for fulfillment, skill expansion, or greater work-life alignment will help you clarify your next steps. Reflect on whether this new career aligns with your long-term goals and values, and consider if you’re ready to embrace the learning curve and challenges that often accompany a significant shift. Take a moment to envision the life you truly desire, then ask yourself what bold step you can take today to move closer to that vision.
4. Have you found your sparkle?
Before leaping into a new career, find your sparkle! Your dream career or business should have you waking up in the morning feeling motivated, energized, and passionate about what you do! You can confidently switch careers when you find the sweet spot between your talents and what you are genuinely passionate about. A professional coach can help you find your sparkle and support you in crafting an actionable plan to move forward with confidence and clarity.
5. Are you prepared for change?
The desire for a career change is experienced differently from person to person. This also applies to the strategies adopted to bring about change. These will differ depending on individual contexts, relevance, appropriateness, skills and experiences of work and career, stage of life, expectations and aspirations for work and career, and the current job market.
Set aside time to reflect, ask questions, gather information, and further clarify your desire for change. Here are some sample questions to get you started: 1. What am I currently experiencing? 2. Can I identify some of the changes I am seeking? 3. What possibilities might change bring? 4. How comfortable am I with change or a change in professional identity? 5. What do I want to experience, what areas of my knowledge and expertise do I want to expand? 6. How do I want to work going forward, is this a change influenced by my stage of life and career? 7. What kinds of further information do I need? 8. What can be researched? 9. Who could I reach out to for an information meeting? 10. Do I have the motivation and stamina for change? 11. Which of my strengths can I rely on during a period of change? 12. What other supports do I have around me?
6. What’s behind your decision?
When pondering a career change, the allure of a fresh start can be compelling, but it’s essential to pause and delve into your true motivations. Ask yourself: Is this change about escaping a challenging situation or about genuine growth? Reflect on whether your current discontent stems from your role, your environment, or a deeper misalignment with your career path. Consider if you're seeking change for excitement or if you're strategically realigning with your core values and long-term goals. This self-inquiry ensures that your decision is not just about fleeing discomfort but about moving towards a career that truly resonates with your aspirations and identity.
7. Does this align with your values?
When deciding to switch professions, get your thoughts together and answer the following questions. First, what do I value the most, and is my current profession aligned with those values? Lack of values congruence with your career or employer usually leads to a lack of meaningfulness. That makes you miserable and risks contributing to a hostile work culture. What skills and strengths do I have, and how can they be applied in my future position? You may also apply gap analysis at this point if your transition requires skills, education, or certifications you do not have. Do I want to evolve and be satisfied, or is it the balance I seek? How will this change assist me in achieving growth? What do I stand to gain, and what do I stand to lose? Am I willing to take those risks?
Finally – why is this shift vital for me going forward, and why is this the right time for this change? Evaluating oneself is the most critical aspect that needs accurate execution as it sets the stage for the next step. All that is required is to reflect on yourself honestly and decide where you would like to go, knowing the risks and rewards that will follow fully.
Then ask yourself: “Who do I have to be that I have never been?” And “What do I need to do that I have never done before?” So, you can go where you have never been before.
8. Can you manage the impact?
Ask yourself some essential questions that will help you understand your motivations, assess your readiness, and determine if the change aligns with your long-term goals and values.
Here are some key points to reflect on as you evaluate your next steps: 1. What is motivating me to consider a career change; dissatisfaction, growth, or passion? 2. What activities or tasks do I genuinely enjoy, and do they align with this new career path? 3. Do I have the necessary skills, or will I need additional training or qualifications? 4. What is the financial and emotional impact of starting over; can I manage it? 5. Have I researched the industry thoroughly and spoken to professionals in the field? 6. Does this change align with my long-term goals and desired lifestyle? 7. Will I regret not making this change, and do I have a support system to help me through it?
