We all have a powerful mental faculty accessible to us that most of us are misusing because we have not been taught the importance of how it shapes our reality and that is our imagination. Most of us can relate to experiences where we have had an entire conversation, or even an argument with someone in our head even without the other person present. The human mind can play out entire scenes and movies in vivid detail about how things should have gone, or what should have been said or not and we can skillfully dwell on it for days, months and even years. In these instances, we are not consciously engaged in creating our experiences we are simply repeating them.

Research confirms that the average person has 60 to 70 thousand thoughts every single day and at least 90% of those thoughts are repeated from the day before many of which are unproductive for most. The consequence of this is that our thinking becomes unregulated and the mind run non-stop stuck either in the past or chasing the future, rarely in the present, where it serves to deliver the best outcomes that you consciously choose to have. When you are consciously engaged in paying attention to your thoughts and feelings you become empowered to make choices that align with things you want over things you don’t.

Using mindfulness as a mastery tool

The key is to become self-aware and mindful of what is happening in your inner & outer worlds and see how you show up. The first thing is to become the observer and take an actively engaged role in the activities you partake in daily such as brushing your teeth, chewing, walking etc. You will find that observing yourself in the day-to-day movements of your life can bridge a connection and help you gain presence within yourself. You will start to notice yourself developing a new relationship with an authentic part of you that fees subtle but has always been there.

Once you’ve spent some time connecting your awareness to the physical self, you can move into observing your mental and emotional self, taking note of the thoughts you think in a day and how you feel at different times. Once you’ve taken inventory, you can get a sense of what state of feeling and thinking you spend most of your time in.

Then, after a few days of internal observing I invite you to become intentional with how you will feel in a day by choosing your mood and attitude even before the day begins. Setting an intention of how you choose to feel will set an anchor and you can use this as a tool to course correct thoughts, behaviors and decisions accordingly. This is how you begin to consciously create the life you want by actively participating in how you think and feel and choosing to feel good in advance. The power is in your mind and it’s yours to reclaim.
