To tell you honestly, I don’t personally hate perfection. On the contrary, I feel satisfied when my room is perfectly cozy and homey. A perfect view during a sweet vacation takes my breath away. People, however, are not designed to be perfect. Leaders are to be trusted to hold such tasks not because they are seamless in every way but because they are great navigators even amid imperfect situations. It means seeing the bigger picture and accepting that there’s no such thing as “the only way.” However, sometimes we can’t help but wonder how we can manage our perfectionistic selves in leadership?

There will always be a crisis in leading a business or a team. It’s part of the package if you’re hungry for growth, development, and breakthroughs. That is why I’m breaking down these power habits so that you can try to tame your perfectionist leader self. But, again, there’s ANOTHER way!
Recognize the opportunity cost and time
Let’s face it. Perfectionists never settle for the merely adequate. While it has a fantastic intention, stretching it could be time-consuming and sometimes a waste of effort. But here are a few helpful questions you can ask yourself to get you on the brighter side when a situation calls for it.
“Am I being productive?”
“Is my impostor syndrome trying to take over?”
“Am I spending my time wisely?”
“Am I afraid of being perceived as “not good enough” by others?
Assess yourself by answering these questions, and from there, you can maximize the impact of your work. Maybe the frustrations of producing something perfect are more likely dragging you and your team to the edge instead of improving your organization or coming up with the desired results.
Manage your expectations
This is not a ticket for you to go chill and just let everything work on its own. On the contrary, you must control yourself from going overboard when calculating expectations. Things could go astray. Your limiting beliefs will try to pull you from your focus and make you set expectations that are not even possible – perfect outcome, perfect result.
Break the cycle
As impossible as it seems, you can break the never-ending chain of perfectionism. You must strengthen your mindset, reconnect with your core, and dodge the limiting beliefs that only deliver BS in your leadership legacy. You may start by never trusting your first reaction, identifying your triggers, overcoming your inner critic, and unlocking the confidence that is coming from your true potential.
You can thrive further with your leadership and career if you are willing to invest in yourself for some inner work. It won’t make things more accessible as a leader, but it will solidify your core values and free you from perfectionism.
Perfection is a myth. Don’t spend your life and resources to prove yourself. Love yourself more by releasing the limiting beliefs holding you back from being the leader you can be.
With love,
Eva Martins
