Have you ever set a big, exciting goal, something that feels expansive and motivating, only to have your mind flood with doubt almost instantly?

Thoughts like:

I’m not good enough.

What if I fail?

What will people think of me?

Before you’ve even taken the first step, your brain has already built a convincing case against you. It starts scanning for every possible mistake, dredging up old fears, and turning that initial spark of excitement into something heavy.

But let me ask you:

What if that same voice listing all the reasons you’ll struggle could become your biggest supporter instead?

Imagine if, instead of keeping you small, it focused on spotting opportunities, reminding you of your strengths, and guiding you forward.

How different would life feel if, rather than second-guessing yourself, your mind started actively looking for reasons you’ll succeed?

Here’s the thing:

Thanks to neuroscience, research, and years of personal and professional experience, I can confidently say this shift isn’t just possible; it’s within reach.

Your brain can be rewired. Your default thoughts can change. And when they do, everything else starts to shift too.

Your brain is always filtering, so make sure it’s filtering the right things

There’s a part of your brain called the Reticular Activating System (RAS). Its job is to act like a filter, deciding what information grabs your attention and what gets tuned out.

You’ve probably noticed this before:

Maybe you hear a new word, or someone introduces you to an idea you hadn’t considered, and suddenly, it’s everywhere—in conversations, online, in books. It’s not that it magically appeared; it’s just that now, your brain is tuned into it.

Now, imagine applying that same filter to the beliefs you hold about yourself.

If you believe you’re capable, your brain starts to notice opportunities that confirm it.

If you believe you’re not enough, it’ll keep finding reasons to back that up, too.

Most of us are unconsciously filtering out opportunities without realising it. But once you do realise it, you can start changing the filter.

How you’re keeping yourself stuck without realising it

Every single one of us tells ourselves stories.

Stories like:

“I’m not good enough.”

“What will people think?”

“What if I fail?”

Because your brain loves repetition, it keeps reinforcing these beliefs. You unconsciously search for evidence that proves them right and overlook anything that contradicts them.

The truth is, you’re not stuck because opportunities aren’t there; you’re stuck because you’re filtering them out.

And the moment you recognise that, things begin to open up.

Because here’s what’s important:

Thoughts aren’t facts.

Beliefs aren’t fixed.

Once you start shifting the story, your brain will shift what it sees.

The shift: How to train your brain to work for you

Confidence isn’t something you’re born with; it’s something you can train. Your brain defaults to what’s familiar, not necessarily what’s true or helpful. So, the same way it’s learned to scan for doubts, it can be retrained to focus on strengths, possibilities, and proof that you’re far more capable than you’ve given yourself credit for. Here’s where to start:

1. Interrupt the old story

Every time you catch yourself thinking, “I could never do this,” pause. Ask yourself: Is this actually true, or just a story I’ve repeated so often it feels like fact? Then flip it. Instead of: "I’ve never done this before, so I probably can’t." Try: "Everything I’ve accomplished was once something I’d never done." Instead of: "This is too big for me." Try: "Plenty of people have figured this out; why not me?" This isn’t about forced positivity; it’s about helping your brain question old assumptions and start looking for new evidence.

2. Talk about your goals like they’re already unfolding

Language matters. The way you speak, whether to yourself or others, shapes how your brain processes reality. So, instead of saying: "I could never do this," say: "I’m already figuring this out." It might sound simple, but over time, your brain starts treating your goals as something you’re in motion toward, not something you’re unsure you’re worthy of.

3. Surround yourself with the right proof

Change is much easier when you’re around people who reflect what’s possible. That’s why your environment matters. Whether it’s through therapy sessions, retreats, or intentional community, being in spaces where growth, rest, and possibility are the norm helps your brain adjust its filter. You stop thinking, "That’s for other people," and start realising, "This is available to me, too."

Why this mindset shift works

Most people think they need more hustle, discipline, or strategy to make meaningful change. But what they really need is to understand: your brain filters your experience based on what you already believe. Shift the belief, and the world shifts with it. And that shift isn’t just about mindset; it happens when your thoughts, nervous system, and behaviors are working together. That’s exactly the work I do: helping people move beyond surface-level mindset tools into real, lasting change through psychotherapy, nervous system regulation, and somatic practices.
