The immune system is truly a phenomenon of the human body. As we proceed through life, the immune system is constantly capturing and killing outside organisms that are a danger to our health and well-being, with an actual memory that prevents invaders from attacking again.

The immune system is comprised of the blood supply, tonsils, thymus gland, spleen, and the lymph nodes. White blood cells travel through the body to fight infection, while others remain in the lymph nodes. When it comes to weight training, hypertrophy and performance, how often do we weigh the importance of a healthy immune system? The immune system plays a critical role in hypertrophy and performance due to its ability to keep inflammation at bay and promote tissue repair after intense training. One of the most significant ways the immune system aids in hypertrophy is by producing cytokines which are proteins that regulate inflammation which can have an adverse effect on muscle growth, repair and performance. The immune system also promotes essential hormones and growth factors such as IGF-1 which help prevent muscle catabolism and promote the growth of new muscle fibre as well as satellite cells which further enhances muscle growth and performance. The emphasis on sound balanced nutrition can not be understated and critical for a healthy functioning immune system which may be one of the most essential factors for overall progress. What other factors support a healthy immune system?

  1. Sleep

  2. Balanced nutrition

  3. Essential fats

  4. reduction of sugar

  5. Hydration

  6. Multi-Vitamins

  7. Maintaining healthy weight and body fat levels

  8. Stress management

  9. Gut health

  10. Exercise

If we implement these strategies into our daily lives, we can dramatically assist and enhance immune system function which is critical to human health, wellness and ultimate performance.
