In today's world, politics has become a major force that shapes not just our society but our personal well-being. As political tensions rise and social media amplifies every controversy, many find themselves caught in an exhausting cycle of stress and anxiety. But what if there was a way to keep your inner peace no matter who won the elections?

The real divide beyond left and right

Having experienced life under communism, capitalism, and in developing nations, I've observed a profound truth: the real division isn't between left and right—it's between the top 1% and everyone else. While we argue over ideological differences, most of us share the same daily struggles, regardless of who is in power.

The political addiction we don't talk about

Consider how political engagement mimics addiction patterns. The euphoria when your candidate wins, the crushing disappointment when they lose—it's an emotional rollercoaster that many can't seem to escape. Like any addiction, this cycle drains our energy and creates unnecessary stress, leaving us feeling angry, sad, or disappointed far more often than content.

What's particularly striking is how people get so deeply invested in political ideologies that their entire worldview depends on their party's success or failure. This investment often comes at a great price: broken relationships, damaged family bonds, and a constant state of stress. Research and polling data have found that politics can be a major stressor in people’s lives and mental health.

The true cost of political identity

Perhaps the most tragic consequence is how political differences tear apart relationships. Families stop speaking to each other, friendships dissolve, and communities fragment—all over beliefs that neither side is likely to change. The irony is that most divisions occur in the name of unity and acceptance. Think about that for a moment!

Understanding our political attachment

At its core, our attraction to political ideologies often stems from a basic human need: belonging. We cling to political beliefs not just for their substance but for the sense of community and identity they provide. This raises an important question: What are we really seeking when we attach ourselves so firmly to these beliefs?

Breaking free: A path to peace

The good news? There's a way to engage with politics without letting it control your happiness. Here's how:

1. Stop fighting unwinnable battles

Accept that you can't force others to change their beliefs. Instead of wasting energy on futile arguments, focus on what you can control, your life, your own actions and responses!

2. Choose your communities wisely

Rather than immersing yourself in political echo chambers, seek out communities centered on positive action. Join a gardening group, participate in sustainable living initiatives, or focus on your personal and spiritual growth. These connections often bring more lasting happiness than political engagement ever could. Choose to focus on something that you feel passionate about and that brings you joy, instead of wasting your energy on something that you cannot change or control!

3. Lead by example

Real change doesn't come from winning arguments, it comes from living your values. Show others the power of compassion, understanding, and positive action by being a real life example. If you want peace and acceptance, start with being peaceful and accepting, sometimes this is harder than you think!

4. Break the cycle of hatred

Remember that hatred only breeds more hatred and destroys mental health. Choose acceptance, love and compassion, especially when dealing with those who hold opposing views. This is how you contribute to the highest good of humanity!

The ultimate solution: Redirecting your energy

Instead of letting politics consume your mental energy, dedicate yourself to something meaningful. Focus on creating positive change in your immediate sphere of influence. Whether it's helping others, pursuing personal growth, or contributing to your community, find purpose beyond political identity.

A personal reflection exercise

Take a moment to consider:

  • How does following politics affect your daily mood?

  • What would it feel like to wake up at peace, regardless of who's in power?

  • What meaningful activities could you pursue with the energy you currently spend on political anxiety?

Moving forward

The goal isn't to become apolitical but to engage with politics in a healthier way. By choosing where to focus your energy and how to express your values, you can stay informed and involved without sacrificing your mental well-being.

Remember, true power lies not in winning political arguments but in creating positive change through our daily actions and choices. As you navigate our increasingly polarized world, prioritize your mental health and choose to be a force for understanding and acceptance rather than division.

Beyond politics: Finding true connection and belonging

In our search for deeper meaning and belonging, many are rediscovering ancient wisdom traditions that offer profound insights beyond the physical realm and political discourse. Sacred plant medicines like ayahuasca, when approached with respect and care, have helped countless individuals transcend the superficial divisions of modern society and access deeper states of understanding and connection.

These traditional practices, stewarded by indigenous communities for generations, can facilitate profound healing experiences that reveal our true nature and fundamental interconnectedness. A direct experience of the divine and a genuine sense of belonging to the greater web of life empowers you to transcend political ideologies and remember that we are so much more than our social constructs and political beliefs.

These insights often lead to a natural shift in perspective, where political differences lose their significance as we recognize our shared humanity and divine nature. Rather than seeking belonging through political tribes, we discover it in our connection to the earth, to each other, and to the greater mystery of existence. This expanded awareness often naturally alleviates the anxiety and stress of political attachment, replacing it with a deeper sense of purpose and inner peace.
