Most of my clients tell me that the number one thing they look for in their outfits is comfort. And I get it; we all want to feel good in what we wear. But I often see that many people mistake comfort for dressing casually. Whether it’s slipping into a cozy sweater, living in sneakers, or choosing flowy pants over structured ones, dressing for comfort feels like a win.

The real issue isn’t comfort itself; we often equate it with dressing down without realizing how it impacts our confidence, productivity, and how others perceive us. In a business or professional setting, that perception can make a big difference.
When we default to what’s easiest every day, we might unknowingly be dressing down our potential. True comfort isn’t just about wearing relaxed clothes; it’s about feeling both physically at ease and mentally empowered. Striking this balance shapes how we feel, how others see us, and how we perform.
Let’s break down the hidden cost of dressing for comfort and, more importantly, how to fix it while keeping ease and authenticity intact.
1. The psychology of comfort in clothing
I know this is something that I say a lot to my clients, but it’s worth repeating every single time: what we wear doesn’t just influence the image we project; it affects how we see ourselves. Research on enclothed cognition shows that clothing shapes our thoughts, confidence, and decision-making. A study by Northwestern University found that people wearing formal business attire performed better in cognitive tasks, made sharper decisions, and felt more powerful than those in casual clothes.
While comfort is important, staying in ultra-relaxed clothing for too long can signal to your brain that you’re in rest mode rather than “show-up” mode. Ever felt lethargic working in pajamas? That’s exactly what’s happening.
Fix it: Comfort with purpose
Instead of reaching for sweatpants, try tailored joggers or well-fitted casual trousers.
Swap your hoodie for a structured knit or casual blazer to keep things polished yet comfortable.
Keep your favorite comfy pieces, but pair them with one refined item to elevate your look.
2. The professional perception gap
No matter how skilled you are, your outfit shapes how people perceive your competence and credibility. A study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology (2024) found that workplace attire significantly impacts perceptions of warmth, competence, and leadership potential. Casual dressing can sometimes make us appear more approachable, but it may also lower how authoritative or serious we seem in high-stakes settings.
This doesn’t mean you need to wear a suit every day. But if you always opt for ultra-casual looks, you might be missing out on the power of visual presence.
Fix it: Elevate your look without losing ease
Invest in high-quality basics that look as good as they feel.
Stick to polished neutrals in comfortable fabrics for a put-together, effortless look.
Swap worn-out sneakers for clean, minimalist options that balance comfort and professionalism.
3. How dressing too comfortably can affect performance
Have you ever noticed that when you dress up, you automatically stand taller, speak with more confidence, and feel sharper? That’s because clothing directly influences self-perception and productivity. Dressing too comfortably can sometimes blur the line between relaxation and engagement, making it harder to get into a focused, high-energy state.
Studies suggest that wearing more structured or professional clothing enhances abstract thinking, decision-making, and task engagement. In contrast, dressing too casually for too long can lead to feeling less mentally prepared for challenges.
Fix It: Use clothing as a performance tool
On key workdays, dress slightly above the norm for an instant confidence boost.
If working from home, create a “work uniform” that signals focus mode instead of lounge mode.
Small upgrades, like a crisp shirt or a stylish accessory, can make a big difference in how you feel.
4. The emotional connection between clothes and self-worth
When we dress in a way that reflects our best selves, we naturally feel better. But dressing too casually for too long can lead to a style slump, where we stop making intentional choices. This can subtly impact our self-esteem and how we engage with the world.
Personal style is dressing in a way that supports your mindset, confidence, and energy.
Fix it: Reignite your style without overcomplicating it
Do a wardrobe refresh, upgrading the pieces you wear most often.
Add one bold or stylish item each week to step out of your comfort zone.
When in doubt, dress for where you want to go, not just where you are today.
Comfort is a wonderful thing, but if we rely on it too much, it can ease us into a space where we lose our spark, the drive that pushes us toward growth and opportunity. That drive is exactly what I help my clients tap back into. Together, we step beyond the comfort zone into a version of you that stands out, exudes confidence, and is ready for what’s next.
