Could you explain more about the flow state and why it is such a desirable state to be in?
The flow state is a deeply immersive experience where you find yourself fully engaged in the task at hand. In flow, your focus intensifies, bringing a sense of ease and a loss of self-consciousness, coupled with profound personal satisfaction and fulfillment. You become so absorbed in the moment that your actions and the present become one, creating a seamless unity with what you are doing.
Your productivity, creativity, and overall performance soar, enhancing your excitement for life. This state is not just desired by athletes but is also eagerly pursued by high performers in every field.
Flow leads to faster information processing, increased creativity, improved problem-solving abilities, rapid learning, and an ideal environment for skill development. For high performers, the appeal of the flow state is a mouthwatering prospect.
Research also highlights a significant reduction in stress levels and an increased sense of fulfillment for those who regularly work in flow. For people who make this a habit, it can become a journey towards self-actualization, helping them realize their full potential and discover deeper meaning in their lives.
What is the main barrier or obstacle most people face in trying to accomplish flow?
The main issue is that people often make it more complicated than it needs to be. Factors like sporadic motivation, unclear goals, feeling overwhelmed, fear of failure, self-doubt, negative self-talk, and yes, this list could go on and on. These feelings, emotions, thoughts, and limiting beliefs are all just feedback signals from your nervous system. It's like the little red warning light on your car, flashing to tell you that you're out of oil. Most people look after their vehicles better than their body and mind (the only real vehicle they have).
These signals originate from your sympathetic nervous system, which essentially signals that action is required. It's important to understand this point. For many high achievers, the necessary action involves orienting their focus towards the parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system triggers the fight, flight, or freeze response, whereas the parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for rest and digestion. During a flow state, your sympathetic and parasympathetic systems work together to find the flow of the specific task at hand, no matter the intensity or lack thereof in the environment.
So, learning to work with your nervous system instead of against it will not only enhance your capacity to enter a flow state consistently but will also develop a sense of control over your emotions, feelings, and thoughts, and help you transform limiting beliefs. We do this by working with HRV.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) gives us the feedback needed to align our clients' nervous systems for achieving flow. HRV is the tool to “read” what your nervous system requires to be primed for flow. Some of the example factors we look at to feed your nervous system what it needs, not what you think it needs, including your current schedule, nutrition, sleep patterns, breathing techniques, and exercise routines, as well as your current worldview and mindset type.
So, circling back to your question; the main barrier is that individuals push harder in their body and mind to get the breakthrough, but what is really happening is that they are on a loop,
repeating. They operate on autopilot, repeating the same patterns while expecting different outcomes. Repeating mantras like "no pain, no gain," or "fight through the pain." However, to find consistency in anything, especially in accessing the flow state, you need to cultivate a more wise warrior mentality, or as I call it, a Maverick. This begins with working with your nervous system instead of against it.
What drives you? How do you stay motivated and energized with your coaching?
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi considered the godfather of flow research and the man who coined the term "flow," found that people who experience a lot of flow in their lives exhibit specific traits.
One in particular is called the Autotelic experience. The word "Autotelic" is derived from two Greek words: "autos," meaning self, and "telos," meaning goal or purpose.
An autotelic individual is intrinsically motivated, meaning they engage in activities not for external recognition or rewards, but purely for the love of what they are doing.
Inside each and every one of us, there is something that lights us up. You can notice it when you do something that excites you or about which you are passionate. This is your intrinsic spark.
This is exactly why I have so much motivation and energy in helping others achieve flow on a consistent basis.
Can you tell me about your background? What inspired you to pursue this career?
Whatever you do in life, whatever your intrinsic spark is hinting at, whether you're currently aware of it or not, it is your tool for further finding and connecting with your true, authentic self. When I was very young, my great uncle, who was a dispatch motorbike rider during World War II, came to live with us.
He told me many stories about being stuck behind enemy lines with only his motorbike and ukulele! I believe he was the first to point out this little intrinsic spark to me. My attention was drawn to his bookshelf, which held a small, old book titled "Zen Flesh, Zen Bones."
Later, I discovered that both of my other uncles were karate masters and philosophers, and they taught me more and more. It was these early experiences that helped keep me oriented in this direction.
Over the years, I have been trained and continue to train in martial arts, and I have educated myself and continue to evolve my education in physiology, psychology, and neuroscience. About 11 years ago, I met my mentor, who began guiding me deeper into what I do.
Don’t get me wrong. There was no red carpet laid out for me along the way. The journey of listening, taking guidance, and tuning into the language of the intrinsic spark was extremely bumpy for me, but it has brought me to this point right now – us talking, or you reading.
