Just like the menopause conversation only a few short years ago, fertility is now being spoken about on a much wider scale. There is growing focus on the gap in support and education around this issue and it’s impact on individuals in the workplace. Such a sensitive topic can be particularly difficult to address in a professional setting. This is something that I support organisations with on a daily basis.

A recent global survey conducted by Fertility Matters at Work found that 72% of respondents felt the topic of fertility was not recoginised in their organization. Most felt that they could not talk to their workplace about the support they needed for fear it would adversely affect their career.

As such below are steps that managers can take to support their people who are going through fertility treatment.

Educate managers on fertility

Managers need to be in the know when it comes to fertility and how it affects their employees. It's crucial for them to understand the challenges that individuals facing fertility issues may encounter in the workplace. By educating managers about fertility, they can better support their employees and create a more inclusive environment. This means providing them with information about the various treatments, the emotional and physical toll it can take, and the potential impact on work performance. When managers are well-informed, they can offer the necessary support and accommodations to help their employees navigate through this difficult journey.

Establishing a supportive environment

Now, let's talk about creating a workplace that's got your back when it comes to fertility challenges. It's all about building a culture that supports employees going through this tough journey. First things first, develop policies and guidance that address fertility issues head-on. Make sure managers and leaders are on board and know how to handle these situations with empathy and understanding.

But it's not just about policies on paper, it's about fostering a supportive atmosphere in the office. Encourage open conversations about fertility, so employees feel comfortable sharing their experiences and seeking support from their colleagues. Let's create an environment where everyone feels like they're part of a team that's got their back, no matter what they're going through.

Embracing flexible working

Now, let's talk about how embracing flexible working can make a real difference when it comes to supporting employees who are going through fertility challenges. We all know that managing fertility treatment can be a rollercoaster ride, with appointments, procedures, and medications to juggle. It can be a lot to handle alongside work responsibilities.

By offering flexible working arrangements, employers can provide their employees with the flexibility they need to attend medical appointments, take time off for treatments, or simply manage the physical and emotional toll that fertility challenges can bring. Whether it's adjusting work hours, allowing remote work, or providing the option to take unpaid leave, these flexible arrangements can make a world of difference.

Imagine being able to schedule that important doctor's appointment without having to worry about taking time off or missing out on work commitments. It can alleviate a lot of stress and allow employees to focus on their health and well-being. Plus, it shows that the company values and supports its employees, which can boost morale and loyalty.

Flexibility is the name of the game here. It's about finding a balance that works for both the employee and the employer. It's about recognizing that life happens outside of the office and that employees have personal challenges they may be facing. By embracing flexible working, companies can create a more compassionate and understanding work environment.

So, let's break free from the traditional 9-to-5 mindset and embrace a more flexible approach. It's time to support our employees through their fertility challenges and show them that we're here for them, every step of the way.

Creating awareness around fertility

Now, let's talk about the importance of creating awareness around fertility in the workplace. It's crucial to foster a supportive and inclusive environment for employees facing fertility challenges. By raising awareness and facilitating conversations about fertility, we can break down the stigma and create a space where employees feel comfortable discussing their experiences.

When we create awareness, we let our employees know that they are not alone in their journey. We can provide resources, such as educational materials and workshops, to help employees understand fertility issues and the available support options. By doing so, we empower them to seek the help they need and make informed decisions about their fertility journey.

Moreover, creating awareness around fertility helps to build a more compassionate workplace culture. It encourages empathy and understanding among colleagues, fostering an environment where individuals feel supported and valued. By openly discussing fertility, we can break down barriers and promote a sense of community within the workplace.

In conclusion, creating awareness around fertility is essential for supporting employees through their fertility challenges. By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, we can ensure that employees feel comfortable seeking the help they need and that they have the necessary resources to navigate their fertility journey. Let's continue to raise awareness and facilitate conversations about fertility in the workplace, creating a space where everyone feels understood and supported.

Considering employee benefits

Now let's talk about the importance of offering employee benefits that support individuals facing fertility challenges. When it comes to fertility, it's not just about medical treatments and emotional support. Employees need to know that their workplace has their back. That's where employee benefits come in. Things like Employee Assistance Programs, Occupational Health services, and fertility-specific benefits can make a world of difference. These benefits show employees that their company cares about their well-being and is committed to helping them navigate the challenges of fertility.

Conclusion

In conclusion, supporting employees through fertility challenges is not just a nice thing to do, it's a necessity. By educating managers, establishing a supportive environment, embracing flexible working, creating awareness, and considering employee benefits, businesses can make a real difference in the lives of their employees. These steps not only improve employee well-being but also foster a positive workplace culture. So, let's take action and ensure that our workplaces are inclusive and supportive for everyone, regardless of their fertility journey.

With 75% of employees searching for fertility benefits in the workplace and 67% prepared to leave their job if they don't have fertility benefits, now is the time to consider implementing fertility-specific support.
