Spring isn’t just a season; it’s a threshold, a cosmic exhalation after the deep introspection of winter. The Earth is stretching toward the sun, life unfurling from slumbering roots, and the great cycle of renewal is beginning again. But through the eyes of a shaman, spring is more than blooming flowers and warmer days; it is a sacred invitation to rebirth, a time when the veil between realms thins and the Earth whispers its wisdom to those willing to listen.

How do we attune ourselves to this ancient rhythm? How do we embrace spring not just as a change in weather but as a call to transformation? Let’s explore spring through the lens of shamanic wisdom, where renewal is not just external but a deeply spiritual process of shedding, planting, and rebirth.
A season of transformation
In shamanic traditions, spring represents the East, the direction of the rising sun, new beginnings, and the energy of birth. It is a time of activation, when stagnant energy is released, dreams take form, and new paths emerge. Just as the Earth bursts with new life, our spirit also seeks expansion.
Shamanic themes of spring
Shedding the old: What must be released for new life to take root?
Planting intentions: What seeds of change are you ready to cultivate?
Awakening to purpose: Where is your spirit calling you next?
Nature does not rush this process; it moves with intention, never hurried, and never forced. It unfolds in divine timing, honoring both death and rebirth as sacred and inseparable partners in the great dance of existence. The trees do not question when to bloom, and the river does not resist the thaw. Everything follows its rhythm, trusting the unseen forces that guide the transformation.
In the shaman's eyes, spring is a lesson in trust, an invitation to surrender to the cycles of growth without resistance. Just as the Earth does not doubt that winter will pass, we, too, are asked to believe in our own unfolding. There is wisdom in patience, power in stillness, and grace in allowing.
Yet this is also a time of momentum, a stirring from within. It is the balance of emergence and timing, of knowing when to wait and when to leap forward. The bear does not wake from hibernation before it is ready, nor does the seed push through the soil before it has gathered enough strength in the dark. Everything happens exactly when it is meant to, not a moment too soon, not a moment too late.
So, as we step into spring, the question is not how quickly we can grow but rather how deeply we can trust the process. Can we allow the rhythms of the Earth to be our guide, knowing that every shedding, sprouting, and blooming is happening in perfect time?
Shedding the old: The sacred purge before growth
Before anything new can flourish, the remnants of winter must be released. Trees do not hold onto dead leaves; the river does not cling to ice. Why, then, do we resist letting go of what no longer serves us?
In shamanic practice, spring is a time for energetic cleansing, a sacred purge that allows us to step forward without the weight of what was. This can take many forms:
Burning herbs (like sage, cedar, or palo santo) to clear stagnant energy.
Spring fasting or detox rituals to cleanse the body and reset vitality.
Releasing emotional baggage through ceremony, journaling, or dreamwork.
Spring cleaning: Clearing out the home of things you no longer need.
Reflection
What patterns or beliefs from winter feel heavy on your spirit?
Where in your life is there old energy that must be cleared for new growth?
Planting intentions
In many traditions, the spring equinox is not just a date on the calendar; it is a cosmic threshold, a sacred pause in time when day and night stand as equals, perfectly balanced. This fleeting moment of equilibrium symbolizes the delicate dance between endings and beginnings, the stillness before momentum, the inhale before the great exhale of new life.
Cultures worldwide have long recognized the equinox as a portal of pure potential, a time when the Earth’s energy is most fertile for physical and spiritual transformation. Ancient civilizations held elaborate ceremonies to honor this balance, calling upon the forces of nature to awaken both the land and the soul (Shamanic Spring Equinox Ceremonies).
The Druids and Celts marked the equinox with festivals of fire, feasts, and sacred rites at stone circles, believing it to be a moment when the veil between worlds was thin, and the Earth was most receptive to manifestation.
In Andean shamanism, the equinox was seen as a time of “awakening seeds,” not only in the soil but within the spirit, the activation of ideas, dreams, and sacred purposes lying dormant in the depths of winter.
In Mayan and Egyptian cultures, temples were precisely aligned to capture the first light of the equinox sunrise, symbolizing the return of wisdom, illumination, and divine order.
This moment of perfect balance, before the light takes over, is an invitation to align our own intentions with the natural cycle of renewal. Just as farmers plant their crops at this time, we, too, are called to plant the seeds of our desires, dreams, and inner transformations.
Shamanic practices for harnessing equinox energy
Sunrise ceremony: Greet the equinox sun with gratitude, acknowledging the balance of light and dark within yourself.
Intentional planting ritual: Write your intentions on paper and bury them in the soil alongside seeds, symbolizing the germination of your visions.
Fire or candle ceremony: Light a fire or candle at dusk and meditate on what you are ready to step into as the light returns.
Creating an intention altar: A sacred space for symbols, crystals, or written affirmations.
Planting seeds with purpose: Burying actual seeds while speaking aloud what you wish to manifest.
Ritual drumming or journeying: Calling upon spirit guides to illuminate the next steps.
The spring equinox reminds us that we are co-creators with the Earth. What we plant now, physically, energetically, and spiritually, will bloom in the months to come. It is a time of trust, action, and honoring the cycles of growth. What will you choose to plant in the fertile soil of your life?
Reflection
What are you ready to create this season?
How can you align your energy with the flow of expansion?
The rebirth of spirit: Embracing your wild nature
Spring is not just about external change but also about the soul's rebirth. The Earth shakes off the stillness of winter, and so must we. Longer days and increased exposure to sunlight trigger a biological awakening, influencing mood, energy, and mental clarity. This shift isn’t just metaphorical; it’s physiological, affecting everything from our hormones to our emotional well-being.
While many experience renewed vitality and optimism in spring, the season also has a complex relationship with mental health. Research suggests that springtime can be paradoxical, ushering in both increased energy and emotional upheaval.
Studies have found a peak in suicide rates during spring, suggesting that seasonal transitions can amplify mental health struggles for some individuals (Seasonal Effects on Suicide Rates).
While Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is often associated with winter, a lesser-known summer-pattern SAD exists, where some experience heightened depression during the transition into warmer months (National Institute of Mental Health).
Shamans have understood this duality, the light of renewal and the shadows that accompany change, for centuries. Transitions, even positive ones, can stir deep emotional shifts. Just as the land does not return to full bloom overnight, we, too, must be patient with our unfolding.
Shamans recognize that true healing in spring requires balance. Just as the equinox brings equal parts day and night, we are reminded that growth includes both expansion and integration, movement and stillness, clarity, and uncertainty.
Shamanic ways to embrace spring’s energy with balance
Grounding practices, such as walking barefoot, using grounding stones, or deep breathing, to stabilize energy during rapid seasonal change.
Honoring both light and shadow by journaling through emotional shifts and embracing transitions with compassion.
Reawakening the body through movement, yoga, dance, or breathwork to help process energetic shifts as the season changes.
Listening deeply to dreams, intuition, and the natural rhythms guiding your growth.
Spring is a time of vibrancy, movement, and possibility, but it also calls for awareness, balance, and honoring the body's natural rhythms.
Reflection
How does spring’s energy affect you emotionally?
Are you embracing renewal in a way that feels aligned and sustainable rather than overwhelming?
Honoring spring’s message
Spring is not just a date on the calendar; it is a call to action, an invitation to transformation. It asks us to:
Shed what no longer serves us.
Plant the seeds of our highest vision.
Step into our wild, expansive nature.
This is a season of becoming. The Earth does not hesitate to bloom, and neither should you. So, as the days grow longer and the world bursts into life, ask yourself:
What am I ready to awaken within myself?
The answer is waiting on the wind, deep in the earth, and within your spirit.
