Every business has a story and every founder ‒ a “why” as to what inspired them to launch it. Yet, many founders don’t intentionally utilise the power of their voice and unique story to inspire others and engage their audience in a way that helps them make an impact and revenue in their businesses. As Monique Blokzyl, an internationally recognized and awarded speaker, business mentor and founder of HeartPowered Business, says:

“Speaking boosts your visibility and reputation and it helps you to build a bridge from being a hidden gem to becoming a recognized thought leader in a faster and easier way.”

According to Monique, it is essential that coaches and experts use speaking as means of growing their communities and businesses as it allows them to address many prospective clients simultaneously, and to also open doors to exclusive communities and meet other entrepreneurs and change-makers. “Not only does speaking expand your reach and help you attract clients, but it can become a source of income by itself”, says Monique.

As a coach and business owner, I have too begun to explore the speaking route to business growth and noticed an increase in engagement amongst my community following a talk I delivered recently. Whilst public speaking can feel daunting at first, it can drastically multiply your reach and engagement so I have asked Monique to share a few actionable steps that you can take to get started with using speaking to grow and scale your business.

1. Get clear on your unique story and message

Get clear on your unique story and message that make you the 1 in your market. You can start by asking yourself how your life experiences got you to what you are doing today and who you have become along the way.

2. Get clear on your ideal audience

Think about who your ideal audience is and who would be keen and happy to pay for hearing your message.

3. Get clear on your dream stage

Ask yourself this question: what conference or event would I love to speak at next? Once you know the answer, start reaching out to event organisers.

4. Find a mentor who has already done it

Invest in learning from someone who has already transitioned from speaking at conferences and events for free to securing paid speaking opportunities. By learning from someone who has already done it, you can be guided in gaining such opportunities for yourself.

Our journeys and stories can serve as a powerful guiding tool and source of empowerment and inspiration for others whilst helping us build and grow our businesses. If speaking opportunities come your way, don’t let your imposter syndrome prevent you from making the most of these opportunities but grab and utilise them to the fullest.
