When I was in my mid-20s, my long-elusive life purpose landed in my lap with a thunderous kerplunk. Looking back, if it hadn’t been so blatant, and loud, I never would have taken the direction I was meant to take. Pretty skeptical and stubborn that way.

It happened while I was attending one of a long string of self-development classes I had been taking. This one was to learn how to be a channeler, something I never considered myself doing or even believing in.

Out of the blue, after class, one of my fellow students approached and said words that changed my life: “You seem to know a lot of stuff. Would you consider teaching me?”

At that point, I was obsessed with personal development, read every spiritual book I could find, studied philosophy and world religions, and did some serious church hopping. Yes, you could say I was a full-fledged spiritual junkie, not something new for me since my seeking nature was inborn.

When said classmate posed her question, my brain screamed are you crazy? I don’t know anything, I’m just a seeker like you!

But words arrived of their volition: “Sure, I’d love to! Bring your friends!”

Three weeks later, she and ten of her friends arrived in my suddenly too small living room. Sitting upright, expectantly, waiting to hear what I had to teach. I stuttered and stammered my way through that first class and sobbed after they left. But remarkably, they all returned the following week. And the next five weeks as well.

At first, I just regurgitated all I had been studying my entire life. I presented standard spiritual maxims along with New Age affirmations and visualizations, laced with an occasional personal development concept.

Until one evening when a student hesitantly raised his hand and said, “All that spiritual stuff is well and good, but how do you get there?”

His question was the one I had been asking since the start of my spiritual quest. It had never been answered to my satisfaction, no matter what discipline, technique or course I had attended.

Once again, my brain screamed, “I’m clueless!” But out of my mouth came “Here’s how!”

I asked for a student volunteer. Sitting her in the middle of the room, I gently led her into a meditative state. I had no idea what to do next, but suddenly questions I knew I needed to ask started arriving. With no idea why or where I was being led, I obeyed those persistent, intuitive directives.

When, after half an hour, questions stopped arriving, I sensed we were done. Slowly, she opened her eyes and wiped the tears from her cheeks as she looked around at the others, wiping their own tears.

She told us that she just knew that everything in her life had shifted. All the pain she had been holding onto had lifted. The limiting beliefs that had been running and sabotaging her were released. She had located and neutralized the origins of a lifetime of feeling unworthy.

The class was blown away. As was I.

Right then, I had a deep knowledge that this process had been gifted to me. It was what I was meant to bring to the world. These past four decades, no matter the challenges I’ve faced or how my path has twisted, that etched moment assured me never to doubt.

Based on my personal experiences, I began teaching others the importance of discovering their own true purpose. I learned that some arrive already knowing why they are here but many don’t. Sometimes, their purpose matches their life work, and sometimes, it doesn't. Sometimes, it’s lofty, and just as often, it’s subtle.

Most frequently, purpose takes its sweet time to unfold. The timing has to be right in the world; the correct co-stars have to be in place; most importantly, their readiness is imperative.

Sometimes, like in my case, the pie-in-the-face method is used until the message is received—whatever it takes.

What is purpose?

There’s a basic, seemingly simple definition of purpose I like to use: Purpose is giving and receiving love in the form it is meant to take for you.

The truth is, that is the capital P purpose for all of us humans. Giving pure, unconditional love and allowing ourselves to receive unconditional love. Easy peasy, right?

In the form it is meant to take for you. Whether that’s as a trash collector or a doctor, or somewhere in between, purpose is expressing the gifts you are here to give; the talents you arrived with; the direction you are supposed to take. A job or career often has nothing to do with it.

The arrival of purpose

For many, doing their purpose means recreating themselves. There you are, making your way into a job you tolerate because the money is good. And suddenly you just know that this is not IT for you. But it’s secure. It’s not terrible. And did I mention that the money is good?

But you can’t shake the persistent feeling that this is not what you are supposed to be doing. You show up at work and feel miserable. You go home and are irritated with your spouse, snapping at your kids for no reason. But you keep showing up 9-5, pushing down that loud message that this is not what you are destined to be doing.

Then, without warning, the company closes. You may get fired, your project put on hold, or you may land in the hospital.

Panicking, a part of you gently reminds you that this is not what you are supposed to be doing. Shaking in your boots, you decide to trust, opening yourself up to recognizing your true purpose.

Then, miracles start happening. Hints are dropped that you can’t ignore. You meet someone who opens doors. And suddenly ten people arrive in your living room, waiting for you to realize how wise you are and how much you have to offer. Ahem…

Looking back at all that happened to get you there, everything makes sense. All that you experienced, all that you learned, all the doubts and fears you pushed through have added up to discovering and embracing your True Purpose.

You also realize that when that purposeful message had previously arrived, you weren’t ready. Now, you can’t imagine going back to that cushy, secure job. Your life feels meaningful and satisfying; the struggle is gone; you have a constant sense of joy no matter what’s going on.

Not to say there won’t be challenges, but they feel different. You know they are helping you get even deeper and wider into your purpose.

How to purpose

Connecting with the inner soul-led direction enables you to discover that sense of purpose. How do you do that? May sound too simple, but just ask.

Keep in mind that it might take a while. It might come through in enigmatic clues and unexpected ways. Messengers might appear. Weird coincidences may arrive.

But know that once you ask the question, What Is My Purpose, the Universe is required to answer. That’s its job.

Words of advice: Be ready since it might just fall into your lap like it did with me.

Meanwhile, do some inner clearing to prepare and deserve what’s being presented to you. Recognize self-sabotage. Clear the programmed beliefs that are in your way. This is an initiation by your soul attempting to empower you to step into your higher purpose.

Those challenging times offer you two choices: Stay glued to a life that’s unfulfilling because it’s secure, or trust those glaring hints and take the risk of becoming who you are here to be.

I promise you this: You will never look back with regret or should-haves. You will be proudly sharing that fear didn’t win, inspiring others to risk being themselves. You will be proud that you did something you didn’t know you could do by consciously following the breadcrumbs laid out by your wise inner self.

Whether you know it or not, this is the moment you’ve been preparing for your entire life. How you choose to be during this time of chaos can shift things for the rest of your life. And for the rest of other peoples’ lives too.

Right now, you have a profound, unprecedented opportunity to re-discover what’s truly important in life. And, what’s truly important is being loved in the form it is meant to take for you.

Remember: That is everyone’s purpose.
