What is Your Philosophy of Care?

Medicine is a shared responsibility and a collaborative effort between physicians and patients. The success of any medical treatment or intervention relies on the combined efforts of both the medical provider and the patient. While physicians bring their expertise, technical skills, and knowledge base to the table, patients play a crucial role through their commitment to recovery and active participation in their healthcare journey.

Physicians, as healthcare professionals, are entrusted with the responsibility of diagnosing, treating, and managing patients' medical conditions. They undergo rigorous training, acquire specialized skills, and stay updated with the latest advancements in their field. A physician's technical competence and knowledge are essential for accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment selection, and effective care delivery. Moreover, effective communication skills are crucial for building a strong physician-patient relationship, ensuring clear understanding, and fostering trust.

Patients have an equally important role to play in their healthcare. Their commitment to recovery, adherence to treatment plans, lifestyle modifications, and active participation in decision-making contribute significantly to achieving positive outcomes. Patients who take ownership of their health, ask questions, seek clarification, and follow prescribed regimens are more likely to experience successful outcomes. It is through their dedication, motivation, and willingness to collaborate with healthcare providers that patients can optimize the effectiveness of medical interventions.

By recognizing the shared responsibility and combined effort required in medicine, both physicians and patients can work together as a team. This collaborative approach enhances the quality of care, improves treatment outcomes, and fosters a sense of partnership and empowerment in the patient's healthcare journey.

Why did you enter medicine?

Medicine allows me the opportunity to be of service to others in a meaningful way. Orthopedic surgery is both cognitively and physically challenging, yet rewarding in that most musculoskeletal conditions can be definitively treated. In orthopedics, you have a real sense of satisfaction for the large part of the pathology we treat, given that the patient’s quality of life can be significantly improved. From the patient’s perspective, a great deal of what we do changes each patient’s life significantly for the better.

In what ways do you give back to the community through charity work?

Over my 15 years of practice, I have had the privilege of volunteering at multiple free clinics in underserved areas. This aspect of my work has been incredibly fulfilling and rewarding on both a personal and professional level. These clinics serve patients who are often in desperate need of orthopedic care but lack access to proper medical resources due to financial constraints or limited healthcare facilities in their communities.

Working in underserved areas has given me a unique perspective on the impact of orthopedic care on individuals who may otherwise go untreated. The patients I have encountered at these clinics often present with a range of musculoskeletal conditions, from fractures and joint injuries to chronic pain and degenerative disorders. Their gratitude and appreciation for the care they receive are truly humbling and serve as a constant reminder of the importance of access to quality medical services.

What is a health tip or an area of interest that you have passion about that patients would want to know about? How can others implement this?

My downtime is often spent engaging in outdoor activities such as tennis, hiking, skiing, or physical exercise with my three children. It’s not only a great way to stay active but also an important aspect of family life. Getting outside and enjoying nature together as a family has become more important than ever, and emphasizing healthy mobility habits by modeling them for my children is a priority for me.

Further, we engage in these activities as a family to encourage teamwork, communication, and cooperation while also instilling a love for the outdoors and a healthy lifestyle. I’m also an avid, though novice, fan of the guitar, and when I’m not outside being active with my family, you may find me getting ambitious and practicing guitar.

By prioritizing outdoor activities as a family, we can encourage a lifelong appreciation for physical activity and the natural world. It sets a positive example for children, teaching them the importance of an active lifestyle and providing them with the tools to lead healthy lives. So, make it a habit to spend downtime engaging in outdoor activities as a family, and reap the benefits of improved fitness, stronger family bonds, and cherished memories.

Stay active! Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine.
