Caretaker, janitor, or environmental steward – these are terms that hold various meanings. To some, they may simply be characters from a soap opera or TV series, while to others, they represent essential professionals in their communities.

Today, I want to discuss a specific type of caretaker, the Environmental Caretaker, or Local Leader. Beyond their role in maintaining streets and sidewalks, they serve as community leaders who inspire and encourage residents to actively engage in their neighborhoods. The AMA program, a prime example of this, is transforming many neighborhoods in southern Brazil.

What does "zelar" mean?

"Zelar," derived from the word "zelador," translates to "take care of" in Portuguese. It originates from the Latin term "zelare," signifying diligent care, devoted protection, and dedicating oneself to something or someone. This term carries a positive connotation, as it embodies care, love, and commitment. When we care for something or someone, we demonstrate our concern, desire for conservation, and willingness to invest time and energy into what is important to us.

What does an environmental caretaker do?

Environmental caretakers are not merely street cleaners, they are community leaders. They intimately know every corner of the neighborhood, the residents, and their needs and desires. Environmental caretakers remain attentive to demands and are always prepared to take action. Moreover, they serve as motivators, inspiring neighbors to care for their communities.

This is precisely what the AMA Local Leader program aims to achieve: the transformation of urban environments through resident involvement and participation. Trained environmental caretakers, functioning as true community leaders, execute the program.

AMA's Local Leaders not only clean and maintain streets and sidewalks but also actively engage residents, encouraging recycling, composting, and community activities. They organize meetings with local influencers, conduct home visits, and promote events and cultural activities to raise awareness and mobilize people.

Why is this important?

Establishing a culture of care is crucial for fostering healthier and more sustainable communities. When residents feel connected to their community and actively participate in activities while caring for public spaces, they become more responsible, supportive, and committed to the well-being of all.

Additionally, the presence of a local leader contributes to enhancing residents' quality of life. Clean and well-maintained neighborhoods experience a reduction in disease incidence and public health issues. Conscientious and responsible use of public spaces leads to decreased rates of violence and crime. When a community unites around a shared goal, it becomes stronger and more resilient in the face of challenges and adversity.

Hence, the role of the environmental caretaker is crucial. They are not mere participants in city hall programs or cleaning companies but agents of social transformation. They are ingrained in the community's daily life, familiar with residents and their needs, and possess knowledge of effective community actions. They serve as facilitators, mediators, and leaders, seeking to unite people towards a common objective.

The Success of AMA – Environmental Agents

Through an innovative and participatory approach, the AMA program has successfully transformed residents' relationship with their neighborhoods. This makes a world of difference.

However, the AMA program is not solely essential for cultivating a culture of care in communities; it also provides an opportunity to generate employment and income. By employing local environmental leaders, the program stimulates the local economy, creating opportunities for individuals who often face unemployment or underemployment. Furthermore, local leaders receive training and capacity building to develop leadership, communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills, which can be valuable in other aspects of life.

The environmental caretaker plays a vital role in establishing healthier, more sustainable, and resilient communities. They are not just street cleaners; they are community leaders who inspire and motivate residents to take care of their neighborhoods. The AMA program serves as an exemplary initiative, showcasing the possibility of transforming residents' relationship with their public spaces through active participation and community engagement.
