Some of us treat our lives like a quest. We feel like we need to search out a purpose and then focus solely on achieving it. I guide people instead to see that their life's purpose can be multifaceted and dynamic, evolving as they grow and learn. Your purpose can encompass many aspects of your life, from personal development to professional achievements. It is not about achieving one purpose but constantly striving to live life purposely.

What is living life purposely?

Living purposely centres upon intentional decision-making that aligns with one's values, goals, and passions. It is not about reacting to immediate life crises; instead, it is about actively pursuing personal and professional development and equipping oneself and others with the skills to thrive independently. It will also guide you through tough times and toward long-term growth and fulfilment.

My journey to living life purposely

I come from Haiti, where fear is widespread because of decades of societal distress and trauma. This fear once held me back in my career, leading me to play it safe and avoid risks. However, through the transformative power of personal development, I found the courage to confront and overcome this fear, fundamentally changing my approach to life and work.

My journey has also been punctuated with grief. Two years ago, my father passed away. He had many aspirations but always thought he had more time to accomplish them. He would talk about his plans for retirement and achieving his goals, but unfortunately, he became ill in his early 50s and remained unwell for many years. Reflecting on my father's journey, I am deeply inspired by his resilience and determination. His life and the grief of losing him ignited a fire within me. They were a stark reminder of life's unpredictability, prompting me to re-evaluate my aspirations.

Why you should live life purposely

Living with purpose is not just about achieving goals but also about enhancing our mental and emotional well-being. Research has shown that a strong sense of purpose can reduce stress and increase happiness and life satisfaction. Purpose is like a guiding star, helping us navigate life's challenges and providing us with resilience and stability.

A purposeful life can also inspire and influence others. When we live with intention, we become role models for those around us. Our actions can motivate others to seek their purpose and strive for personal growth. In this way, living purposefully creates a ripple effect, leading to a more compassionate and connected world where people support and uplift each other.

How to start living life purposely

  • I want to emphasise that waiting until we are unhappy and dissatisfied to seek help is harmful and unnecessary. Despite the challenges, the pandemic allowed us to pause and contemplate our lives, goals, and happiness. Now that life has returned to its usual busy state, deliberately setting aside time for self-reflection and self-discovery is crucial.

  • Ask yourself, are you living your desired life or simply going through the motions? We all must contemplate this question at some point in our lives, and we must remember that the power of self-reflection and self-discovery is within our control.

  • My motto is: "As long as you're alive and breathing, you have the potential to live the life you desire." This powerful reminder underscores the limitless potential within each of us. Every moment, no matter how small, offers a fresh start. Embrace this potential and take proactive steps toward your aspirations, such as setting clear goals, developing a growth mindset, or learning new skills.

  • Do not hesitate to seek guidance if necessary. Personal growth and transformation are always within reach. Seek support if you need help with where to start or for accountability.

  • Reflect on what brings you joy; think about those dreams and aspirations hidden deep within you, knowing they can become a reality and serve as a guidepost toward purpose. Remember that you have the power to shape your destiny.

Seeing change

Over years of working with clients, I have seen their meaningful transformation as they embrace living with purpose and witness the moment when they realise that change is possible and within their reach.

I live my life purposely now but haven't always, so I understand their journey. It begins with a conscious choice and then gradual shifts as opposed to a sudden revelation.

Living purposely provides clear direction and meaning to our existence rather than forcing immediate and jarring change. When we live with purpose, we are more likely to set thoughtful goals and make informed decisions. These decisions, rooted in our purpose, empower us and give us a sense of control over our lives. Even as our goals shift and change, we can live life purposely daily.
