LeKeshia Mathis, Advocate, Advisor and Mentor
Could you please tell us a little bit about your business and what services you provide?
Yes. Previously, I did a lot of work with child welfare, day treatment programs for children and adolescents and intensive outpatient programs before taking on the task of opening my one business. In 2023, I established Evolutionary Services and Consulting, where I provide individual and couples counseling services to clients in Washington state, where I specialize in addressing issues related to substance abuse disorders, co-occurring disorders, violence prevention and education, as well as relationship dynamics. In addition to providing therapy services in Washington, I extend my expertise across the United States by providing educational services as a National Certified Parenting Instructor, a Domestic Violence Specialist, and a certified Anger Management professional.
What inspired you to create Evolutionary Services and Consulting, and what audience do you target your business toward?
As a biracial woman raised in a predominantly Black family, I became acutely aware of the insufficient mental health services available to minorities, particularly within the African American community. With the passage of time, I discovered that many individuals refrained from pursuing necessary mental health support due to the absence of professionals who resembled them, leading to apprehensions about potential discrimination, judgment, and a general lack of empathy. This realization motivated me to pursue higher education and obtain the necessary licenses, enabling me to become one of those recognizable figures who can contribute to bridging the gap in mental health care within minority communities. I wasn’t sure exactly what I was going to do, but once I relocated to Arizona from North Carolina, I was placed in spaces with some phenomenal women who were breaking generational courses and making history in the mental health field and other industries. Seeing them in action really pushed me to figure out what I wanted to contribute to society, hence, I landed here.
In terms of my target audience, although I serve anyone who needs my services, I do prioritize minority individuals who are looking specifically for a minority therapist, because as I stated before, I have a desire to fill a gap in communities that are lacking. I also find myself gravitating to those teenagers who are labeled as “troublemakers” or “delinquents”. I tend to establish great rapport with this population because I allow them to be who they are, and I truly meet them where they are at. This creates a trusting relationship where I can provide intervention and guidance, helping them to take control and change things in their life for the better.
Can you explain how you help your clients?
I let my clients take the reins during our sessions. In a world where so much feels beyond our control, I want them to feel empowered regarding their mental health, which means they get to choose what we talk about. That said, if I notice something clinically significant that they might be avoiding, I make sure to bring it up and encourage them to confront those issues. I always remind my clients that therapy can get tough and uncomfortable before it starts to improve, and I intentionally bring out those hidden emotions to help them learn how to manage them. I’m here to encourage, validate, and challenge them to become the best versions of themselves. I know I can be a polarizing therapist; some clients appreciate how I push them out of their comfort zones, while others might not be so fond of it. But for those who stick around, I’m dedicated to helping them discover who they were truly meant to be.be.
How did you build your career? What has been your greatest career achievement thus far?
Honestly, I can't pinpoint exactly how I ended up in my career; it feels like I just stumbled into it. When I made the decision to return to school, I was pretty much in the dark about what I wanted to pursue. I started off at a community college, diving into prerequisite courses without clear direction. It wasn't until my final two semesters that I discovered the student center, where they were handing out information about potential universities and bachelor’s programs, we could transfer to base on the classes we had taken. To my surprise, all the courses I had completed lined up perfectly with the social work program at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
With the credits I earned at community college, I learned that I could transfer to UNC Wilmington and complete my degree in just two years, so I jumped at the chance. Even while I was there, I still felt a bit lost about my future. I had no idea how broad the field of social work really was; all I knew was that I wanted to steer clear of child welfare. Ironically, that was the very path I ended up on right after graduation. It was through that experience that I realized my passion for therapy, and I found out that pursuing a Master’s in Social Work would allow me to get a clinical license to provide therapy, which I eagerly pursued.
As I ventured into the mental health field, I was fortunate enough to encounter a variety of opportunities that helped me grow my skills and shape my professional identity. It’s been a journey of trial and error, and I’ve learned so much along the way. Each experience has contributed to my understanding of what I truly want to do, and I feel grateful for the twists and turns that have led me here. So, in a way, my career has been built on a foundation of exploration and learning, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
When I think about my biggest career milestones, starting my own practice stands out as the most significant. Honestly, I never imagined I would own a business; it feels surreal to have accomplished that. Building my company from the ground up has been an incredible journey, one that I cherish deeply. Reflecting on my past, I wasn't even sure I would finish high school, so to have not only graduated but also earned multiple degrees is something I never take for granted. Each step along the way has been a testament to my hard work and determination. Opening a business that draws on that educational foundation has truly been a remarkable experience. Furthermore, establishing my practice has not just been a career achievement; it’s a personal triumph that I hold close to my heart. It’s amazing to see how far I’ve come, and I feel grateful every day for the opportunities that have come my way. This journey has taught me so much about resilience and the power of believing in oneself.
Reflecting on your journey thus far, what challenges have you overcome and how has it contributed to your success?
I've faced my fair share of rejection and disappointment in the workplace. There have been times when employers have let me down, and I've felt overworked and undervalued. Colleagues who didn’t see eye to eye with me even tried to tarnish my reputation, which was incredibly disheartening. However, instead of letting these experiences break me, they fueled my determination to carve out my own path and become a professional who leaves a lasting impression in my industry.
Whenever I encounter a “no,” it only pushes me to seek out a “yes” elsewhere. I believe in the power of collaboration and often work with other companies, but I’ve learned to trust my instincts. If I sense that a situation isn’t right or that my values are being compromised, I don’t hesitate to step back. My focus remains on my goals and the life I envision for myself, and I refuse to let anyone dictate my potential or hinder my progress.
I’ve made it a point to surround myself with positivity and to stay true to my vision. I know what I want to achieve, and I’m committed to pursuing it relentlessly. No one has the authority to tell me what I can or cannot accomplish, and I won’t allow obstacles or negativity to deter me from my journey. Each setback only strengthens my resolve to succeed and to make a meaningful impact in my field.
Outside of your work, are there other ways that contribute to society?
Absolutely, I’m involved with the National Association of Black Social Workers, where I proudly serve as the vice president for the Valley Metro Chapter in Arizona. In this capacity, I work to promote social change and advocate for mental health, particularly focusing on the needs of the African American community. It’s a role that allows me to be a part pushing for initiatives that can lead to meaningful improvements in people’s lives.
Beyond my work with the association, I’m also committed to community service. I volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona, where I have the privilege of mentoring a little sister. This experience is incredibly rewarding, as I get to guide and support her while also engaging in various other volunteer activities throughout my community. It’s all about building connections and fostering growth, both for myself and those I work with.
Recently, I took another step in my journey of giving back by sponsoring a child from the Dominican Republic through Compassion International. This initiative has opened my eyes to the challenges faced by children in different parts of the world, and I find joy in knowing that I can contribute to their well-being. Giving back is something I truly enjoy, and witnessing the positive changes it brings to others’ lives is what keeps me motivated.
How do you maintain a positive work/life balance?
I really pay attention to what my body is telling me. When I sense that I need to take a break, I don’t hesitate to do so. I’ve set clear boundaries for myself that I’m not willing to bend. For instance, I keep my work phone separate from my personal phone. Once my workday is over, I turn off that work phone, which means I’m completely off the clock. No work-related calls, no emails—nothing. My focus shifts entirely away from work, allowing me to recharge and enjoy my personal time.
After my faith, my family takes center stage in my life. I structure my work around this priority, ensuring that I’m present for my loved ones. I believe that maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial, and that’s why I’m a strong advocate for self-care. I genuinely love myself and recognize that taking care of my well-being is essential. This means I make time for activities that bring me joy and fulfillment, whether it’s volunteering at my church, pampering myself with a fresh manicure, or simply hanging out with friends who uplift me.
In my life, God, self-love, and family are the top priorities, and everything else falls into place after that. I’ve learned that by putting these elements first, I can lead a more balanced and satisfying life. It’s all about creating a space where I can thrive, both personally and spiritually, while also nurturing the relationships that matter most to me. This approach not only keeps me grounded but also allows me to be the best version of myself for those I care about.
What are your next goals or project in life? What do you aim to achieve?
I'm excited about the idea of starting a non-profit organization that will offer a range of services and resources to underserved communities. While I don’t want to spill all the details just yet, I can share that my vision includes providing free therapy sessions, parenting workshops, and a variety of other supportive programs. I believe in the power of keeping some things under wraps until the right moment, but I’m passionate about making a real difference in people's lives.
My goal is to create a positive ripple effect that extends beyond just my local area, reaching communities all over the country. I have a grand vision for this non-profit, and I truly believe it can transform lives and uplift those who are struggling. The services I plan to offer are designed to empower individuals and families, helping them navigate challenges and build a brighter future.
For now, I’m keeping the specifics close to my chest, but I’m eager to share more when the time is right. I’m driven by a strong desire to contribute to society and support those in need, and I can’t wait to see how this journey unfolds. Stay tuned, because I have a feeling that this non-profit will be something special!
What key advice do you have for achieving success?
First, work hard and pray harder! Instead of just sitting around hoping for things to change, take the initiative and create your own opportunities. Discover what truly excites you and use that as a foundation to grow. Remember, it’s your journey, and no one else should define what success means for you.
Secondly, know that success is a personal concept, and it’s all about what you envision for yourself. You have the power to shape your path and determine what achievements look like in your life. So, don’t let others dictate your goals or aspirations; trust your instincts and follow your passions.
Lastly, the road to success is yours to navigate, and it’s essential to embrace that control. By actively pursuing your dreams and staying true to what you love, you’ll carve out a unique definition of success that resonates with you. Keep pushing forward and remember that the journey is just as important as the destination.
Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
In addition to running my business, I have a strong desire to become a university professor, where I can educate and inspire the upcoming wave of social workers. I believe that sharing my knowledge and experiences with students can make a significant impact on their careers and the communities they will serve. Teaching is not just a job for me; it’s a way to give back and help shape the future of the profession.
Beyond academia, I’m also passionate about becoming a speaker who focuses on important topics like mental health, advocacy, and motivation. I want to engage with audiences, sharing insights and stories that resonate with people on a personal level. By addressing these critical issues, I hope to raise awareness and encourage others to take action, whether it’s in their own lives or within their communities.
Right now, I’m actively pursuing these goals because I genuinely believe that my voice and experiences can contribute positively to society. I feel a strong sense of responsibility to be present and involved in these areas, as they are crucial for fostering understanding and support for those who need it most. It’s an exciting journey, and I’m committed to making a difference wherever I can.
