As a Hypnotist and a Clinical Hypnotherapist many people ask me if time travel is actually possible.
Well, who isn’t fascinated by time travel, outer space, and the endless and limitless possibilities of the unknown?!
We’ve all seen the film ‘Back to the Future’ where Michael J. Fox plays Marty McFly, the cool kid who travels through time in a DeLorean time machine invented by ‘Doc’ Brown.
And if time travel is possible, then just imagine how you really could recreate and create your own past and future.
However, according to the rules of theoretical physics, anything you tried to change in the past would be corrected by subsequent events.
Put simply: It is theoretically possible to go back in time, but some experts say you could not change history.
As a hypnotist and a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I disagree.
We CAN change our pasts, and we CAN create our futures
Physicists have considered time travel to be theoretically possible since Einstein came up with his theory of relativity. Einstein's calculations suggest it is possible for an object in our universe to travel through space and time in a circular direction, eventually ending up at a point on its journey where it has been before – a path called a closed time-like curve.
And yet physicists continue to struggle with our ability to change the past. The most famous example is known as the grandfather paradox: For example, if a time-traveller goes back to the past and kills a younger version of his or her grandfather. The grandfather then would not have any children, erasing the time-traveller's parents and, of course, the time-traveller, too.
And so who would kill Grandpa?
Well, I disagree...
And here’s why...
Time Travel may not be exactly what we think it is.
Moreover, some people compare time travel with Out of Body Experiences, (OBE), and Astral Projection (An intentional OBE).
One of my clients recently told me that they felt that they had experienced Astral Projection during our hypnosis session together. Astral Projection became more known and spoken about after the Netflix series ‘Behind Her eyes’ where characters were able to travel across the Universe using this practice! Whether this client did or did not is not the question.
The point is that they felt they did.
Are OBEs and Intentional Out of Body Experiences (Astral Projection) real?
Again, if it is real for the person experiencing them, just like a dream, then it is real. They are 'real' in the sense that they feel real for the person experiencing them.
The year 2020 was all about the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns and quarantines. It is no wonder then that many people around the world were looking for a way to escape the tedium of a solitary indoor existence. Perhaps that is why an old declassified document from the CIA mentioning astral projection created a buzz on Twitter this summer.
All of this aside, let’s get to the facts.
What might an OBE feel like?
A feeling of floating outside your body.
An altered perception of the world, such as looking down from a height.
The feeling that you are looking down at yourself from above.
A sense that what is happening is very real.
Unlike Astral Projection, OBEs are unplanned. And very few people will ever experience an OBE in their lifetime. They may be caused by stress or trauma. For example, a frightening or dangerous situation can provoke a fear response, which might cause you to dissociate from the situation and feel as if you are an onlooker, watching the situation from the outside.
Hypnosis and Clinical Hypnotherapy can also use neurological techniques to help you distance yourself from difficult or challenging situations in the present or the past, and to improve them in some way, as well as supercharging how you feel about the future.
More about this later...
For now, let’s consider the neurology, the neuroscience, and the brain:
“Mental time travel” refers to the conscious experience of remembering the personal past and imagining the personal future. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, scientists have explored the hypothesis that mental time travel into “nonpresent” times (past and future) is enabled by a special conscious state (chronesthesia).
The left lateral parietal cortex was differentially activated by nonpresent subjective times compared with the present (past and future > present). A similar pattern was observed in the left frontal cortex, cerebellum, and thalamus. There was no evidence that the hippocampal region is involved in subjective time travel. These findings provide support for theoretical ideas concerning ‘Chronesthesia’ and ‘Mental Time Travel’.
A core brain network is engaged in remembering the past and envisioning the future. This network overlaps with the so-called default-mode network, the activity of which increases when demands for focused attention are low.
Human beings spend a good deal of their waking moments thinking about what has happened in the past and what might happen in the future. When this thinking involves themselves as observers or participants in the happenings, it has metaphorically been referred to as ‘Mental Time Travel’.
And so how can we use this knowledge to help ourselves, to help others, and how can it be used in therapy and to improve our mental wellbeing?
I use many techniques using neurology and neuroscience when working with my clients in clinics in Harley Street, London, as well as in Manchester, UK, and Worldwide.
Working with the past, the present, and the future, clients can overcome painful memories, traumatic events, past trauma, and PTSD, as well as relieving anxiety, depression and stress. Clients can also overcome fears and phobias, stop panic attacks, recover from eating disorders, drug and alcohol addictions, gambling, OCD, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and start living their lives once again.
Moreover, clients come to see me to gain a greater sense of freedom, boost their confidence and self-esteem, motivation, as well as gaining personal enhancement, building their career and their business empire, creating healthy relationships, experiencing more love and happiness each and every day, and ultimately transforming their lives.
