From backyard to big Famberry business: A Ukrainian family's journey with cornelian cherry
A unique niche in Ukrainian agriculture
The Olshansky family, boasting nearly 30 years of diverse business experience, has found a unique niche in Ukrainian agriculture through the cultivation of the cornelian cherry. Their journey, characterized by toughness and innovation, has transformed a simple backyard shrub into a thriving commercial endeavor.
The inspiration for cultivating a cornelian cherry orchard sprang from the family's desire to diversify their agricultural ventures. Their choice was deeply rooted in Ukrainian tradition, which reveres the cornelian cherry for its notable health benefits and medicinal qualities.

From Kherson to Kyiv: The unyielding journey of Verde confections during wartime
A dream born in Kherson
In 2017, Verde Confections began its story as a modest coffee shop in Kherson, Ukraine. The founder sought to create a cozy haven where people could forge connections over steaming cups of coffee and decadent treats. Little did she realize that this small venture would grow into a powerful emblem of Ukrainian resistance and the unyielding spirit of entrepreneurship.
With passion and the founder's personal savings and family support, Verde thrived by opening three cafes in Kherson. A small coffee kiosk, a larger spot in a bustling shopping mall, and finally, an ambitious cafe combining a coffee shop, store, and restaurant offering both vegan and non-vegan dishes. The people of Kherson embraced these spaces, turning them into vibrant community hubs.
Surviving the storm
In 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, turning dreams into uncertainty. The Verde team fled Kherson, carrying precious memories and a three-month-old baby. Seeking refuge, they found solace in Mykolaiv, where they established a volunteer center to support those defending the city. Eventually, they made their way to Kyiv in pursuit of safety and stability.
In the heart of upheaval, Verde's founders took a leap of faith to revive their business in Kyiv. Amidst the chaos of war, they redefined their focus towards confections. Armed with their successful legacy of crafting sugar-free desserts in Kherson and recognizing the longer shelf life and independence from the tumultuous restaurant industry, they embarked on a new chapter.
"We realized that cafes alone weren't enough anymore," Alisa shared poignantly. Fueled by passion, the team decided to persevere by focusing on what they excelled at: creating mouthwatering, sugar-free desserts. Their shared dream, despite the upheaval, was uncompromising.
Building a new future
Investing personal savings and securing a friend's support, the team reignited Verde's spirit in Kyiv. Although resources were scarce, they chose quality over all else, acquiring high-grade equipment to produce premium confections and pave a path for future growth.
Today, Verde's delectable creations grace the shelves of major Ukrainian supermarkets and gas stations. "We had hopes for online dominance," Alisa confessed, "but war forced a different path." With resolve, Verde adjusted, now achieving 60% of sales through retail and 40% online. Despite numerous challenges, Verde stands tall as a symbol of hope and steadfastness.
From farm to table: The inspiring journey of a Ukrainian cheesemaker
Embracing a new life
Olena's life took a profound and unexpected turn when she and her family decided to leave behind the bustling city for a simpler, pastoral existence. Their heartfelt journey began a decade ago with the acquisition of a small herd of goats. Little did they know, this modest start would soon evolve into a cherished cheesemaking and agritourism venture.
“We moved to Stanislav, Kherson Oblast and started raising goats over a decade ago,” Olena recalls.
Over the years, Olena's farm grew into a beloved destination for visitors eager for a unique taste of rural life. Tourists flocked to the farm to learn about goat farming, partake in cheese tastings, and escape into the tranquil countryside.
“We were really building something special,” Olena says with palpable pride. The farm's steady growth was fostered by small grants and unwavering support from their children.
Heartbreak of war
But their dreams faced a harsh and unexpected blow with the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. “On February 24th, 2022, our lives changed forever,” Olena shares, her voice tinged with sorrow.
Defiant and protective, Olena and her family chose to stay despite the dangers, driven by a deep love for their goats. “We were afraid for our goats. They were our family,” she explains, her eyes reflecting the bond they share with their animals. By some miracle, most of their beloved goats survived, yet the farm bore the scars of significant damage.
After their village's liberation, Olena and her family faced the monumental task of rebuilding. Aided by a grant, they managed to reopen their farm and resume cheesemaking. However, the path to recovery has been steep with soaring feed costs and a slow return of tourism.
Triumph of the human spirit
Olena’s story is a stirring testament to the endurance of the human spirit. Against the odds, she continues to pursue her passion, crafting cheese and nurturing her farm.
Her journey highlights the strength of rural communities and the critical need to support small businesses that embody the heart and soul of these regions.
