Has life been feeling a little gloom & doom lately? With your finances, love life, work life, social life, family life, or maybe all of the above. It feels like every area of your life is caving in and you don’t have the strength or resiliency to make it through anymore. You keep trying to remind yourself, “She Believed She Could, So She Did” but that just makes it worse because what if she doesn't believe? Then what? How can this self-help mantra help me if I don’t believe in myself?
You see, most of the motivating concepts of this world lift us with an ego-driven confidence that not everyone has. I know I didn’t have it. I definitely didn’t believe in myself. So, where do you go from there? If you can’t fulfill step 1 of this “simple” 2-step process, then what?
Well, from my own experience, it took a new saying. Actually, it took an entire book of verses that would change my outlook on everything I knew about myself and the world – The Bible!
Believe in him to believe in yourself
You might be thinking “That's a very misogynistic and patriarchal thing to say! I do believe in myself and I know I can do anything – independently.”
Well, my friend, that’s your prideful and stubborn ego talking. An ego that I had for a very long time. An ego that created distance from my loved ones, deepened my depression & exasperated my suicidal thoughts. You truly don’t need to do it all on your own… that’s just exhausting.
I’ve come to realize that independence is just a synonym for self-proclaimed loneliness. We live in a world that glorifies independence and doing things on our own, but we were designed to be social, in fellowship with one another, and rely on our heavenly Father! We need each other and we need our Creator!
2 Timothy 1:7 “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV - For God has not given us a spirit of - Bible Gateway
When you take a step out of that never-ending catastrophic tunnel of fear, doubt, worry, and self-destruction, you step into a sound mind filled with peace, love, & joy! When you rely on Him, He can pull you through any obstacle. He does not give us a spirit of fear, that is the enemy in your ear telling you that you’re not worthy or you're not capable. He doesn’t want you to know the truth, a truth that is the very opposite! You ARE worthy and you ARE capable!
Mark 10:27 “Jesus looked at them and said, “With man, this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”” Mark 10:27 NKJV - But Jesus looked at them and said, - Bible Gateway
Those simple words that Jesus spoke are the truth and why you have the capability to do all things through Christ. When you believe in that truth, you can utilize your faith as a weapon against any disbelief or anxiety. It’s not wishful thinking or manifestation when you have a Heavenly Father who is working things out for your good and helping you every step of the way.
Ephesians 6:16 “In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” Ephesians 6:16 NKJV - above all, taking the shield of faith - Bible Gateway
The echo chamber of your mind is filled with all of your past failures and the negative things people have said to you. The enemy uses them as flaming arrows to weaken you into submission by keeping you stuck in your comfort zone. When you take up the shield of faith, you no longer believe what he has to say about you because your faith extinguishes any attempt from the enemy. Faith allows you to be exactly who God says you are. It allows you to have a mighty confidence in who He created you to be that trumps who the world says you are.
Acts 1:8 “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit is upon you” Acts 1:8 NKJV - But you shall receive power when the - Bible Gateway
The Holy Spirit did not come until Jesus was resurrected from His crucifixion. This power & communication was not something that people could rely on before Christ. When we believe in the Son of God and that He truly died for our sins and rose again, we have the authority from Jesus Christ to receive the power of the Holy Spirit. We must believe with open hearts and open minds to fully receive His Spirit & His peace. These are not just words on a page. His word is living and breathing. When you spend time reading the word of God, He has the opportunity to speak to you and you have the opportunity to listen.
Acts 3:12 “shows not by our power but His power through us. His power through the broken, damaged, sinful, and humble show a great testimony of God’s grace and glorify God’s power.” Acts 3:12 NKJV - So when Peter saw it, he responded to - Bible Gateway
When you realize that you can’t do everything on your own, the bruised ego might cause you to feel unworthy or incapable. Like I said, that’s what the enemy wants you to think. He feeds off the emotions, but faith feeds our relationship with God. Faith feeds our ability to be used as servants with His power shining through us. However, this is not to be used for our fleshly desires and getting what we want, but for His will in our lives. When our will aligns with His and we believe in Him, we can move mountains together.
Philippians 3:10 “I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death” Philippians 3:10 NKJV - that I may know Him and the power of - Bible Gateway
This speaks to developing the relationship with Jesus for who He is and not what He can do for us. We can share in His sufferings by living for Him over living for ourselves. Rather than pursuing your fleshly desires, when you develop that relationship with Him, your desires merge with His desires to create something beautiful. Not only that, but you will likely share in His sufferings of being ridiculed as He was. I know I have been, but for the first time in my entire life, I do not care what anyone has to say about me. My ego doesn’t take a hit because I know it has nothing to do with me and everything to do with Him. That proves His power working through me. The old people-pleaser version of myself would have crumbled if anyone said something bad about me. In fact, I did crumble… many times.
1 Corinthians 3:16 “Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16 NKJV - Do you not know that you are the temple - Bible Gateway
The resurrection power of Jesus Christ is alive in you! Just as Jesus rose from the grave, you can rise from any situation that you are facing in His Mighty Name!! This does not equate to the law of attraction or manifestation, this is through faith in Jesus Christ that He can work through you. This beautiful relinquishing of control in the trajectory of our lives and surrendering to His will for us makes it possible to overcome anything. Instead of swimming against the current and exhausting yourself, believe that God can guide you through any valley with ease. This is also why we must protect our temples mentally, physically, and spiritually. Following God is usually accompanied by spiritual warfare so avoiding vulnerability to the enemy is a must!
When you are one foot in and one foot out, the enemy will try to break your faith and pull you back down.
