Procrastination  the act of delaying or postponing, is something that most people have experienced at some point in their lives. But when it becomes a habit, it can hinder personal and professional growth. It can also lead to guilt and demotivation. So what can you do about it?

Tomorrow, today, next week and later words on a wooden post.

The first step is to recognise and identify when you are procrastinating and ask yourself why. Are you finding the task too challenging? Are you distracted? Perhaps you're worried about failure? The reason behind procrastination may determine how you overcome it.

Setting time limits or breaking a task into small chunks may help some struggling with procrastination. Others may find removing distractions or introducing a reward more motivating. Above all other possible solutions, we recommend Intention Tapping to everyone trying to overcome procrastination.

What is intention tapping?

Intention Tapping, developed by Steve Wells, 'combines tapping with specific, definite intentions that act as commands to your unconscious mind to release the emotional attachments behind your problems and restore your body energy back to flow.'

You focus on an issue, say or think of an Intention Statement, and the Unconscious Mind carries out the healing process. Tapping on acupuncture points aids and further empowers the treatment.

This simple yet effective technique is a quick way to shift negative states and help you gain greater clarity. It is a powerful tool to enhance performance and emotional healing, and when applied to feelings, thoughts and beliefs contributing to procrastination, it can be a real game-changer.

Benefits of intention tapping for procrastination

One of the benefits of Intention Tapping is that it's easy to learn and use on yourself. You start by using simple intention statements and tapping along on your meridian points.

Intention Tapping is a practical, accessible and versatile tool that anyone can use to help themselves with procrastination and almost any other issue. Whether you're struggling with coursework at school, a report at work, a self-care regime or putting off tasks around the home, intention tapping can help to clear your blocks, overcome limiting beliefs, release any emotional attachments and restore the right energy flow. It has helped me trust in the healing power of my unconscious mind - some people prefer to call this the 'superconscious mind' or 'higher self.'

Intention tapping for procrastination in practice

Procrastination is something I'd always struggled with before learning Intention Tapping. At university, I found that I always left writing essays until the last minute, and after numerous attempts to break the pattern, I concluded that it was just the way I worked. And I was reasonably successful with it, getting a 2:1 in Social Sciences BA and a credit in my MSc degree. After that, I swore I'd never write another essay again!

Fast forward 15 years to my Intention Energy Process / Intention Tapping Practitioner course, and you can guess what I needed to write…not one but two written case studies! The feelings of resistance quickly returned. Why did I need to sit and write case studies when I had been using Intention Tapping for 2 years at my private practice, Life Force Trauma Healing? Plus, I'd completed a 3-day training course and attended regular supervision sessions with Steve Wells! Surely he didn't need written evidence of my proficiencies?

I mentioned my resistance to writing the case studies to Steve, and he suggested using Intention Tapping to clear some of my blocks and heal the negative emotional attachments I'd formed to writing essays. Using statements while tapping continuously, such as:

  • I release all my emotional attachments to, 'I should not have to do a case study as I am already using Intention Tapping well.'

  • I release all of my emotional attachments to, 'It's not fair.'

  • I release all of my emotional attachments to, 'It's only a piece of paper.'

  • I restore the right energy flow to this anger in my stomach.

At the time, I was also battling feelings of being overwhelmed and sadness about my mother's Alzheimer's, so I honed in on those specific feelings and used Intention Tapping statements such as:

  • I release all of my emotional attachments to this overwhelm.

  • I restore the right energy flow to this sadness.

  • I release all of my emotional attachments to 'I have too much on my plate already, and I do not have enough time.'

I also had to release all my emotional attachments to my vow never to write another essay and to that memory.

  • I release all my emotional attachments to that vow and to that memory.

Releasing my emotional attachments freed me, and with a clear mind and a positive flow throughout my body, I could start and complete my case studies. Whereas in the past, I'd procrastinate and leave essay writing until the very last minute, I could set my own deadlines, stick to them and, dare I say it, enjoy writing the case studies!

The biggest achievement of all came from breaking a lifelong self-limiting pattern of acceptance that I was a procrastinator. Thanks to Intention Tapping, I realised I could change that about me, and not only that, but overcome every other limitation in my life. I still use Intention Tapping today, and it's an integral part of my practice at Life Force Trauma Healing. I am proud to be among the first 10 certified Intention Tapping Practitioners worldwide.
