Maybe in the past you have asked yourself the following question: why are certain people able to accomplish their goals? We know that words like persistence, courage, preparation, determination, time management and self-control are usually what we use to describe successful people’s characteristics, but there is something more – they have identified their Factors of Success!
Identifying your Factors of Success make the difference: if you want to succeed you must be effective through those elements that allow you to achieve your goal.
For instance: two cyclists took part in a cycling competition and one of them won it. They had the same trainer, the same kind of bicycle and the same health status. Why did one of them win?
The answer is that one of them had made excellent and accurate preparation with his equipment! He has monitored each component of his equipment, forecasting any risks during the competition, and has successfully prevented delays and annoyances that could jeopardise his race.
In the same way you can monitor in every detail strategic areas of your goal that you need to develop, by evaluating which of them can impact positively on your action plan.
I have identified two categories of Factors of Success. They are:
- Primary Factors of Success
- Secondary Factors of Success
The Primary Factors of Success are connected to your own preparation, skills, competence, education and knowledge that can be developed with appropriate training and effort.
Your Primary Factors of Success are personal characteristics that allow you to start on your project: you know what you can do and you can always improve these personal characteristics, even during the execution of your plan.
Instead, Your Secondary Factors of Success are related to the specific nature of your goal: and if you want to succeed or make a difference in your field, you need to stay focused on the characteristics that allow you to emerge among your main competitors.
Look at on how you can evaluate your Factors of Success and how they can work for you, and which of them can make a significant impact in your action plan, so you can pay attention to the Factors of Success that need to be developed.
Then you should monitor how your Factors of Success have worked; consider changing them if they aren’t relevant to your project.
But which are these Factors of Success?
We can see in the Primary Factors of Success as:
- your Vision about your goal.
- your Motivation.
- your Persistence.
- your Strengths in a specific Area.
- your Skills.
- your Education and Knowledge.
- And your Competence related to your Project.
As you have seen all these Primary Factors of Success are related or connected to your own personal soft skills.
While you can identify your Secondary Factors of Success, as:
- your detailed Action Plan.
- your Time Management skill.
- your Tasks.
- your Equipment.
- your Financial situation.
- your Expertise
- your Environment or Workplace
Dear Brainz Magazine’s reader, you can give a rank to your Factors of Success from 1 to 10, where ten is the higher rank: so, you can evaluate where you can intervene and ask support to other professional to help you to improve.
You can create your own Factor of Success list, and it will be fine for monitoring those Factors of Success that can help you to accomplish your goal; you can decide to focus with more energy on those Factors of Success that can have the greatest impact on your action plan.
I feel to suggest you write down your Factors of Success:
- when you are planning your project (Goal Setting).
- when you will act on your tasks (Action).
- when a single task or project is completed (Reviewing).
Remember: your Factors of Success are determinants of your plan. Define and choose them in a smart and appropriate way!
