Written by: Sachin Parmar

If your mind isn’t focused, then a task could take hours compared to minutes. Find out how to work smarter, not harder with flow state.

Have you ever heard of the phrase ‘flow state’? It’s when you’ve accomplished a positive mindset, which allows your brain and body to be totally focused. You’re not distracted by outside noise, you’re energised, fully immersed and enjoying the job at hand; so much so, that time flies and before you realise, it’s 4pm instead of 10am, and you’ve forgotten to eat lunch!

But, how do you prepare yourself to achieve a productive flow state? At evokeu, there are a few tips and tricks that we regularly use to tune our minds into an activity. They’re easy to put in place and can be replicated wherever you’re working, whether it’s in a busy office, a train whizzing its way to a destination or your study at home.

Keep your workspace in order

First things first, making sure you have a clear space is a must before you start a piece of work. Everything should have a place so that it’s within quick and easy reaching distance for when you’re in the depths of a project. It’s also worth keeping the objects on top of your desk to a minimum; an uncluttered work environment will assist you in reaching the goal of a focused mind. Even the ritual of tidying your space before you begin a project can be a soothing part of preparing to work, as it readies your mind for thinking and creativity.

Sounds can boost your attention and work efficiency

If you find silence deafening, it could be beneficial to have some non-distracting music playing in the background. You could perhaps use a soundscape noise like birds tweeting or rain banging against a window to muffle the quietness. There’s always a good selection of these types of noises on mindfulness apps like Calm and Headspace, or maybe you prefer the comforting chords of classical. Whatever track takes your fancy, just make sure that it’s going to aid your concentration not make your mind wander. For instance, it might be best to steer clear of anything with lyrics, as it can become easy to tune into the words of the song, rather than the words of your project.

Begin your morning with purpose

Last but by no means least, starting each day with defined objectives will sharpen your focus on what must be completed, not what could be completed. Although it can be tempting to fill up your to-do list with every imaginable task you can think of, it’s important to be strict with yourself and keep your daily tasks to a minimum. Your list needs to be achievable, otherwise you’ll find that you quickly give up on ticking off the jobs, as the mountain is too high to climb. Bitesize is best, you’ll be surprised how quickly you get through a project by completing small chunks. Remember to always allow your body and mind to fully rest and recuperate when taking a break.
