Today, LinkedIn is one of the most trusted online channels when scouting for a job. It’s a place where professionals from different fields can connect. For most, the purpose of why they built their LinkedIn profile is to look for a job or to connect with potential employers.

LinkedIn is more challenging because it is unlike Facebook or Twitter, where you can invite as many people as you like and be accepted randomly. Furthermore, since LinkedIn is an avenue for professionals, your profile must be well-optimized to portray you as a potential employee for decision-makers and recruiters.

Here are some of the most used techniques on LinkedIn to get you noticed by potential employers.

1. Share Relevant Posts

If you are new to LinkedIn, you will discover it is waved away from the usual social media sites like Facebook. Although LinkedIn is regarded as a social media platform, it is, however, designed for a different audience. You must know the clear delineation of a personal social media post from a professional one. If on Facebook you share your life’s highlights, on LinkedIn you must limit your posts relative to what others are sharing, like:

  • Employment

  • Skills

  • Best Practices

  • Corporate News

  • Training

  • Professional Tips

2. Post Comments and Reply to Other Posts

Feel free to comment on posts, especially if the content is at the level of your expertise. All your activities are recorded on LinkedIn, even the comments and replies sent to others’ posts. So, if you think you can share something relevant and valuable, by all means, comment and reply, as it will help increase your profile reach.

3. Write Articles

LinkedIn allows users to write articles. You can bank on your skills and share something about them in the form of an article. Some share tips and some share the science behind their skills. Whatever you want to share, it’s but an edge to be noticed if you publish articles on LinkedIn. Most importantly, by publishing articles on LinkedIn, you can use them to position yourself as a thought leader in your industry.

4. Connect with Other Users

LinkedIn shows the profile of people related to your account. This is the best way to connect to potential employers. You can check all the recommendations and:

  1. Choose your connections (friends and office mates).

  2. Connect with people in the same field.

  3. Connect with employers.

  4. Connect with professionals in the same city and many more.

However, when connecting with other professionals, politely send a message, introduce yourself, and ask to be connected. This is your initial way of reaching out to them and signaling that you are a potential employee. So, always give it your best shot. A word of caution, though, do not connect randomly; instead, always make the best selection.

Another way to connect with them is to check the Job Search section, as you can directly apply to jobs via LinkedIn. Most LinkedIn job adverts show the recruiter in charge of the advert. So, if you know the recruiter behind an advert, you can also send them a connection.

With all these considered, there’s no reason not to be connected with potential employers via LinkedIn. You just seek as many relevant connections as possible and then contact them as needed (if you are seeking a new job already).
