Introduce yourself! Please tell us about you and your life, so we can get to know you better.
Hello, I'm Tamzin—a cheerleader, friend, wife, and mummy (although my 13-year-old son has recently started calling me "mum" and it tugs at my heartstrings a little!). I'm also a proud dog mom, daughter, and a strong believer in the goodness of humanity. I firmly believe that each and every one of us has the potential to live the life of our dreams.
During the weekends, you'll typically find me immersed in nature, exploring the woods with my friends, or accompanying my son on the golf course (although I'm more of a spectator than a player!). I'm a passionate advocate for personal development and a self-professed book addict—a true bibliophile. Living my best life is my ultimate goal, and I aspire to inspire others to do the same, even my ever so slightly spoilt canine companions!
Having delved deep into the research on the positive impact of play in the workplace, I've made it my mission to infuse fun and playfulness into businesses and organisations. It's a win-win situation when staff, leaders, directors, and business owners genuinely love what they do, find joy in it. It makes then happy and consequently, perform better. Although, of course, it's not just about work—play is an essential ingredient in a fulfilling life.
I absolutely adore activities like playing with Lego, solving puzzles, or engaging in any form of play that brings a glimmer of happiness. Furthermore, being surrounded by animals brings me so much joy! I just love seeing a happy animal having fun, whether is a dog going on a walk, a duck quacking or a cow chewing grass. With a background in positive psychology, I find immense joy in helping people recognise their own greatness and discover the incredible future that lies ahead for them.
Can you tell me more about your coaching services and the specific areas or topics you focus on?
I specialise in coaching business owners, leaders, directors, and C-suite executives. My coaching style is highly flexible, which allows me to adapt to the specific needs of my clients. During the contracting stage, I provide my clients with a clear understanding of my background and expertise and this transparency helps to set the foundation for our coaching relationship.
When working with my clients, I support them in exploring and defining their desired outcomes from the coaching process. It's important to me that we maintain a transparent and goal-oriented approach. If my clients express a desire to explore a particular topic but begin to veer off in another direction, I proactively challenge the shift to ensure the discussion remains relevant and useful in achieving their goals.
While the desired goals may evolve and change over time, I have found that my flexibility greatly benefits my clients. Thanks to my experience and background, I frequently work with leaders, including individuals on a leadership trajectory. I assist businesses in various areas, such as succession planning, leadership training, and exit strategies. Additionally, I provide support for businesses in their learning and development requirements, as well as in negotiations or mediation. My expertise covers a wide range of people-related areas, which enables me to offer a flexible approach.
My passion lies in personal and professional development, helping individuals unlock their full potential and lead fulfilling lives. That's why I incorporate a playful approach to coaching with a positive psychology twist. My coaching sessions are known for their flexibility, fun, and playfulness, all while maintaining a forward-focused approach.
Furthermore, I'm currently in the final stages of developing an online learning portal specifically tailored for leaders. This comprehensive training resource will cover various topics, including managing underperformance, understanding personal and team values, and enhancing negotiation and interview skills. It's designed to provide leaders with the tools and knowledge they need in a convenient and accessible format.
What inspired you to start your coaching business, and how has it evolved since its inception?
You won't believe how many times I've heard people talk about leaving their previous jobs because they were treated poorly, felt undervalued or their role was lacking flexibility (to name a few). It's such a shame because organisations end up losing incredibly talented individuals, which leads to unnecessary costs, high turnover rates, and ultimately affects their customers too. That's why it's crucial for leaders to nurture and take care of their employees. By doing so, they'll retain the best talent and become highly sought-after employers.
When I first started my coaching journey, I was very much the corporate coach type: blue suit, white shirt, very starchy and corporate, and let's be honest, a bit dull. But thanks to the research I've been conducting and the materials I've been reading, I've completely transformed my approach. Now, I embrace a playful style, and guess what? My clients absolutely love it! I've brought Lego into boardrooms, facilitated brainstorming sessions through play, and fostered a team culture of fun, all of which have had tremendous positive effects on creativity and collaboration.
My business is all about evolution. I'm constantly seeking feedback from my clients because it's incredibly important to me. I want to meet their needs and exceed their expectations, so their input guides me in shaping my services. In fact, I'm always on the lookout for research and studies related to play and fun in the workplace. My affiliation with the BPS (British Psychological Society) and my membership in the ICF (International Coach Federation) keep me connected to the latest findings and allow my business to stay at the forefront of this exciting field.
I know my business will continue to evolve and adapt based on the feedback and needs of my clients alongside current research and innovation. I'm committed to creating a work environment where playfulness and fun are valued, making work enjoyable and rewarding.
How do you approach helping your clients achieve their goals? Could you share any success stories or testimonials from previous clients?
When it comes to helping my clients achieve their goals, I take a holistic and individualised approach. I believe in combining flexibility, positive psychology, neuroscience, and play to create a transformative coaching experience. My primary focus is to empower my clients and guide them towards their desired outcomes.
To begin the coaching journey, I engage in open and collaborative discussions with my clients. We start by exploring their current situation, understanding their strengths and areas for improvement, and identifying their aspirations. By establishing a clear understanding of where they are now and where they want to be, we can lay the foundation for effective goal-setting and action planning.
Throughout the coaching process, I prioritise my clients' needs and goals, ensuring that they remain at the forefront of our sessions. I provide guidance, support, and accountability, but the direction we take is driven by my clients' own insights, preferences, and motivations with a few challenging questions from me when needed! This client-centred approach ensures that they feel empowered and in control of their progress.
Success stories and testimonials from previous clients highlight the positive impact my coaching has had on their lives. Many have experienced significant increases in performance and confidence, which have led to improved outcomes in their personal and professional lives. Some have even remarked that our time together has been life-changing, allowing them to gain clarity and a fresh perspective. One common theme among testimonials is that while high performance may have initially been their primary goal, they have gained so much more from our coaching relationship.
Additionally, my coaching approach emphasises the importance of creating a culture of fun and play. By incorporating elements of playfulness into our sessions, we foster a supportive and enjoyable environment that encourages exploration, creativity, and growth. This unique blend of coaching techniques ensures that my clients not only achieve their goals but also develop a positive and transformative experience along the way.
What sets your coaching approach apart from others in the industry? Are there any unique methodologies or techniques you utilise?
Oh, I'm all about fun, colour, and creativity! It's my unique way of combining positive psychology, flexibility, and playfulness. You won't catch me relying too heavily on coaching tools, not because they're necessarily bad, but because I'm all about avoiding unnecessary restrictions. My true passion lies in helping people break down barriers and walls, and sometimes those tools can inadvertently hinder that process. However, if a client specifically requests a certain coaching tool, I'm more than happy to explore it and incorporate it into our sessions.
But, here's where things get interesting. I offer a hybrid approach that blends coaching and mentoring, particularly when working with leaders and individuals enrolled in my leadership program. You see, they benefit from my expertise, and that's when I step into more of a mentoring role rather than strict coaching. It allows me to provide guidance, share insights, and offer tailored advice based on my experience.
Why do you use a playful approach?
I incorporate play into my coaching because I firmly believe in the power of joy and the importance of enjoying every aspect of life, including our work. I am passionate about helping individuals create a life full of joy, where work and personal life intertwine harmoniously.
Research (including my own!) shows that incorporating play at work can have numerous benefits, such as increased creativity, improved problem-solving skills, enhanced teamwork, and reduced stress levels.
By embracing playfulness in our professional endeavours, we enrich our lives and create a positive ripple effect that extends beyond the workplace.
If you could change one thing about your industry, what would it be and why?
My, potentially unpopular opinion is that I strongly advocate for the regulation of the coaching industry. Dealing with people's emotions, beliefs, and minds requires a responsible and ethical approach. I have witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects when clients seek guidance from unregulated coaches. This is why I firmly believe that a level of regulation is necessary.
Adhering to a code of ethics, maintaining appropriate insurance, engaging in continuous professional development (CPD), seeking supervision, and being trained in the proper coaching techniques are crucial factors in ensuring the highest standard of coaching practice. Knowing when to refer clients to other professionals, such as psychotherapists, is also an important aspect of responsible coaching.
My own journey of training, development, accumulating coaching hours, and undergoing assessments for approval by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) has made me acutely aware of the significant disparity between qualified and non-qualified coaches. The impact of the coach on coachees is profound, and we have a duty to provide a safe and supportive environment for our clients. Training and regulation are key to fulfilling this duty and maintaining the integrity of the coaching profession.
I firmly believe that regulations will encompass a combination of experience and training. While I acknowledge the distinctions between coaching and counseling or therapy, it is essential for therapists to possess the necessary qualifications, considering that all of us are involved in supporting the mental and emotional well-being of others. I understand that not everyone shares this viewpoint, but I am convinced that implementing such regulations is imperative.
Tell us about a pivotal moment in your life that brought you to where you are today.
A pivotal moment in my life that significantly shaped my path to where I am today was when I was told that I couldn't express my authentic self, laugh, or engage in casual conversation with potential clients. This encounter made me realise that the corporate world doesn't have to be rigid and dull. It inspired me to believe that professionalism and fun can coexist, that we can embrace our humanity while still maintaining a high level of professionalism. This realisation fuelled my passion for creating a coaching approach that incorporates both professionalism and enjoyment, proving that it doesn't have to be an either-or situation.
