Building willpower: Techniques from a coaching perspective

Willpower is a powerful, dynamic tool essential for making daily decisions and achieving long-term success. Yet, maintaining it can be challenging when you’re not equipped with the right knowledge and tools. These gaps can lead to fluctuations in motivation and productivity, impacting overall progress and even self-confidence.

In this article, we'll explore effective strategies for understanding willpower, strengthening it, and incorporating it into everyday life. Whether you're looking to enhance your existing willpower or seeking to improve your focus and drive, the following tips will aid in developing this crucial skill to better achieve your goals. Let’s begin the journey toward unlocking your broader potential.

Understanding willpower and the feedback loop

Willpower is not a static resource; it fluctuates daily. Much like a muscle, it requires regular exercise to maintain its strength and effectiveness. Successfully completing tasks and achieving your goals not only strengthens your willpower but also boosts your inner sense of self-worth. Each achievement tells your subconscious that you are reliable and capable, reinforcing your confidence and cultivating your willpower.

Conversely, repeatedly failing to meet personal commitments can create a negative feedback loop. This cycle begins when the promises we make to ourselves—like committing to regular gym visits or choosing healthier foods—start to falter. When these self-promises are not met, it undermines our self-confidence, which then weakens our willpower further. This erosion of willpower makes it increasingly difficult to follow through on future personal tasks, trapping us in a cycle of diminishing returns. While unmet commitments to others can also affect us, it is often our failures to uphold promises to ourselves that are most damaging. Recognizing and breaking this negative feedback loop is essential for restoring willpower and rebuilding self-confidence.

Understanding the three facets of willpower: "I will," "I won’t," and "I want"

There are three main types of willpower that play crucial roles in our ability to set and achieve personal goals. Let's dive into each one:

1. I will (power)

This type of willpower involves the drive to do the things that need doing, even when they're challenging. It's what pushes us to wake up early for a workout, stick to a cleaning schedule, or maintain good dental hygiene. "I Will Power" is about taking proactive steps toward our goals, leveraging discipline to perform tasks that align with our aspirations. It operates heavily on our ability to follow through with commitments and the daily actions required to realize our ambitions.

2. I won't (power)

This form of willpower is all about resistance. It's the mental muscle you flex when you need to avoid temptations that could derail your progress. Whether it’s skipping dessert, turning off the TV early to get a good night's sleep, or keeping a cool head in challenging social interactions, "I Won't Power" is crucial for maintaining self-control in the face of distractions and setbacks. It involves the ability to say no to short-term gratifications that conflict with long-term objectives.

3. I want (power)

Perhaps the most critical, "I Want Power" drives our core motivations and keeps our eyes on the prize. This type of willpower taps into our deepest desires and long-term goals, reminding us why we are exerting ourselves in the first place. Whether it's remembering the reason you're saving money instead of making an impulse purchase, or why you're investing hours into a personal project, "I Want Power" fuels our intrinsic motivation. It involves the parts of the brain responsible for future planning and reward processing, helping to reinforce the behaviors that connect directly with our personal values and ultimate objectives.

The marshmallow test: A lesson in delayed gratification

The marshmallow test is a classic study in psychology conducted by Walter Mischel at Stanford University in the late 1960s. In this experiment, children were given a choice between one marshmallow they could eat immediately or two marshmallows if they could wait for 15 minutes while the researcher left the room. The study found that children who were able to wait longer for the bigger reward generally had better life outcomes, as measured by various metrics, including academic success and health, years later.

This test beautifully illustrates the power of "I Won't Power" — the ability to delay gratification and resist temptation for a greater reward in the future. It highlights how developing self-control at an early age can have long-term benefits, reinforcing the need to cultivate this skill throughout life.

Sidenote on Nature vs. Nurture in the Marshmallow Test: The findings suggest that children’s ability to delay gratification isn’t solely the result of self-control. It’s also a rational response to what they know about the stability of their environment. This insight indicates that both nature and nurture influence outcomes in the marshmallow test, demonstrating that it’s within your grasp to change your nature through understanding and adapting to your environment.

Fueling your "I want power" for lasting motivation

To effectively harness your "I Want Power," increase your self-awareness about your true motives. By keeping your long-term desires at the forefront of your mind, you make it easier to navigate obstacles and stay committed. Continue reading for practical tips and strategies that will help you apply these insights and significantly enhance your willpower.

Regularly reflecting on your goals and why they matter can significantly boost your resolve. Simple practices like keeping a journal of your progress, setting daily reminders of your goals, or even posting motivational quotes in your workspace can activate and strengthen this aspect of willpower. Additionally, creating a vision board or a mind movie can visually affirm your goals and aspirations, providing a constant source of inspiration and motivation. By keeping your long-term desires at the forefront of your mind, you can align your daily actions with your larger life ambitions, making it easier to navigate obstacles and stay committed.

Actionable recommendations

1. Recognize and manage decision fatigue

If you're not familiar with the term, "decision fatigue" is the tiredness or overwhelm you feel after making too many decisions. Like running a marathon, the more decisions you make, the more exhausted your brain feels, making it harder to choose wisely as the day goes on. This can lead to snap judgments or poor choices because your mental energy is depleted.

To combat decision fatigue, streamline your day by reducing the number of decisions you need to make. For instance, decide what to wear and what to eat for breakfast the night before. These simple preparations can save your mental energy for more important decisions later in the day. A well-known example of minimizing daily decisions is Steve Jobs, who wore the same black turtleneck, blue jeans, and sneakers nearly every day. This wasn’t a fashion statement as much as a strategic choice to avoid decision fatigue, allowing him to focus on more crucial business decisions at Apple.

Sidenote: If you're someone who can successfully take a short nap during the day, consider it a useful reset for combating decision fatigue. Even a brief catnap can refresh your mind, enhancing your decision-making capacity for the rest of the day.

4. Simply by understanding how decision fatigue works, you can organize your daily tasks more effectively, keeping your willpower strong and your mind clear.

2. Transform negatives into positives with mini-goals

One of my favorite strategies for improving willpower with minimal effort is setting "mini-goals." These are simple tasks designed to build positive habits effortlessly. For example, if you're aiming to improve your dental hygiene, consider making flossing one tooth your mini-goal. Yes, you read that right, floss just one tooth. It may sound completely ridiculous, but this approach is a clever trick we play on our subconscious, and the results are astounding.

Most of the time, you'll end up flossing all of your teeth, but the key is to acknowledge and celebrate even if you only meet the minimal goal. This reinforces that even minimal effort towards a positive habit is a win.

Pick three such mini-goals at a time to perform each day to maximize the impact. These tasks are so simple that their completion builds a positive feedback loop in your brain, enhancing your willpower consistently and sustainably. For instance, another mini-goal might be to do just one push-up. Some days you might find yourself doing more, but always recognize your effort for meeting the initial goal, regardless of whether you go beyond it. This approach helps maintain positive momentum without the pressure to always outdo yourself.

Remember, for a mini-goal to be effective in rewiring your brain, it has to be so easy and so effortless that you could still do it if you were sick in bed with a fever. By acknowledging even small accomplishments, you reinforce positive behavioral patterns, enhance your self-esteem, and strengthen your willpower. Celebrating these small wins daily leads to substantial cumulative progress and fosters sustainable growth, creating a reinforcing cycle of success.

3. Engage in mindset work

Improving your willpower involves more than action; it requires a profound understanding of your own behaviors and motivations. While self-guided journaling is a valuable tool for those looking to independently explore their mindset, it can be enhanced by techniques that delve deeper into the subconscious.

1. Identify Where You Are Falling Short: Begin by acknowledging the tasks or commitments you tend to avoid. If you're journaling independently, write these down as a starting point for introspection.

2. Explore Through Guided Questions:

  • Why? Ask yourself why these tasks are daunting. Is it fear, lack of interest, or something else? If journaling, document your thoughts to clarify these emotions.

  • Consequences of Action: Consider, "If I were not procrastinating, what is the worst that could happen?" This can help confront and demystify your fears.

  • Hidden Benefits: Reflect on the potential subconscious benefits of your procrastination, like "What does my procrastination protect me from?" This introspection can uncover significant insights.

3. Innovative Journaling Technique: A useful strategy to deepen your introspection during the journaling process is to start writing with your non-dominant hand. For right-handed individuals, this means using your left hand, which does more than just engage the creative right hemisphere of the brain; it also focuses your attention on the physical act of forming letters. This diversion helps reduce your usual mental filters and allows thoughts to flow more freely, minimizing self-judgment. Left-handed individuals, on the other hand, should use their right hand, achieving similar benefits by engaging different brain circuits. Once you've captured your initial thoughts, you can switch back to your dominant hand if it makes further writing more comfortable. This method effectively bypasses the analytical interference that can hinder introspective writing, allowing for clearer, deeper insights.

4. Reflect and Analyze: Engage deeply with the insights you gather. For self-guided journalers, this means taking time to consider what resonates and what doesn’t. For those working with a coach, this process can be significantly deepened, accessing direct subconscious motivations without the barriers of conscious filtering.

5. Develop Adaptability and Awareness: Understanding the 'why' behind your actions enhances your flexibility and responsiveness to change. It dismantles old patterns and fosters a proactive, rather than reactive, mindset.

Working with a life coach who uses advanced techniques such as guided introspection in a state of light hypnosis can exponentially accelerate this process. This approach allows for direct questioning that taps into the subconscious, offering insights that are typically inaccessible through solitary methods. Whether you choose to embark on this journey independently through journaling or seek the guidance of a professional coach, you stand to significantly enhance your willpower by aligning your actions with deeper, often hidden motivations.

4. Daily tweaks and lifestyle adjustments

To sustain and strengthen the willpower you are developing through mindset work, mini-goals, and reducing decision fatigue, daily tweaks in your routine can play a pivotal role:

1. Prioritize Restful Sleep: Adequate sleep is foundational to maintaining willpower and mental clarity. Without sufficient rest, our brain's capacity to make thoughtful, disciplined decisions is compromised from the moment we wake up. Ensuring regular, restful sleep sets the stage for a day with stronger willpower and less susceptibility to decision fatigue.

2. Establish a Morning Routine: Incorporate practices like meditation or light exercise into your morning routine. These activities not only calm the mind but also prepare you for the day ahead by boosting focus and determination.

3. Form New Habits: Consistency turns good intentions into lasting habits. Focus on incorporating small, positive changes into your daily life to gradually build a lifestyle that naturally supports your willpower and goals.

Conclusion

Building and sustaining willpower is a dynamic process that involves understanding your mind, setting achievable goals, and making daily lifestyle adjustments. By engaging in self-guided journaling, setting mini-goals, and adjusting your daily routines, you create a robust framework for personal growth. Whether you choose to navigate this path independently or with the guidance of a life coach, the journey toward unlocking your true potential is rich with opportunities for development and success.
