What’s up! Drake Kirkwood here. Thanks for swinging by and checking out this exclusive interview with Brainz Magazine.
Let’s start with the basics. I’m a 27-year-old entrepreneur living in Calgary, Canada. I own and operate a mental fitness coaching business and an e-commerce platform. I run the latter with my twin bro (we’re identical). We grew up playing sports together and now we’re business partners. It’s pretty cool.
I’m a big sports guy. I earned a baseball scholarship to the United States where I played at Colby Community College in Kansas and then finished at Columbus State University in Georgia (alongside Garrett–I guess we were a package deal). It was an amazing experience that I’m exceedingly grateful for.
Overall, I’m a pretty simple guy. I enjoy working on my businesses and playing sports with my buddies. A meal and drinks, watching the game, or playing cards with my family and friends is an ideal time for me. If I’m taking it easy, there’s a good chance I’m reading a book or watching a flick (or NFL Redzone).
Drake Kirkwood, Mental Performance Coach
What inspired you to create Mind Mastery with Drake, and what is the core mission or purpose behind your business?
Pain and freedom inspired me to create Mind Mastery with Drake.
Let’s start with the pain. If you grew up with tight finances, you know the pain of seeing your parents work very hard to provide. My parents (God Bless ‘em) did just that to give us what we needed and to make ends meet. This has inspired me to take a crack at entrepreneurship and become financially independent.
The other source of my pain stems from poor mental fitness—lack of confidence, fear-driven behavior, and egotism. Although this realization is one of my greatest sources of pain, it’s also my greatest teacher. This pain is what inspired me to study the brain and explore the nature of the mind. It was almost out of desperation—I needed to find answers.
So that’s what I’m running from—money struggles and poor mental health. This pain has encouraged me to start a business geared toward getting people mentally fit. I can’t think of anything more important in today's world.
Now, let’s talk about what I’m pursuing. I want freedom. Freedom of mind, body, soul, and finances—‘holistic freedom’, if you will.
It starts with the mind. If you can’t free yourself from your mind, you’ll never be able to experience true freedom. Freedom of mind is simple to me—it’s the ability to recognize thoughts and choose which to focus on and which to let go.
Freedom of body is straightforward—it’s the ability to move your body, protect yourself (and your family), and feel a genuine sense of vitality.
Freedom of soul is the ability to listen to your intuition and to trust that the Universe (or any higher power—call it what you please) is on your side.
Lastly, freedom of finances is the ability to earn as much money as you desire and not let it control you; to use it to benefit humanity.
Freedom is an infinite game. And I want to play for the rest of my life!
How does this relate to Mind Mastery with Drake? It’s evident in our mission: We want to empower 10,000 high performers to become mentally free. The more people who take responsibility for their mental fitness, the more people will experience mental freedom.
The world needs more people who are mentally fit!
Could you share some insights into the methodology or approach you use to help individuals achieve mental and emotional well-being?
We keep things nice and simple. Our health system is brilliant, but one way it’s failed us in the 21st century is by overcomplicating health. It’s left humanity confused and more unhealthy than ever.
I lead my clients through our Mental Fitness Blueprint which involves developing 6 mindful habits in 90 days.
See? Simple.
Those 6 mindful habits include:
Eating brain foods
Daily movement
Proper sleep
Meditating
Journaling
Reading
The approach is as follows:
Energize the mind. First, you need to change your energy. Nothing changes until you change your energy.
Discipline the mind. Next, you need to be the one in control, calling the shots. You need to discipline your mind.
Focus the mind. Lastly, you need to get on purpose and care about something larger than yourself.
If this training process sounds appealing to you, I encourage you to check out our website or take this mental fitness quiz!
What sets Mind Mastery with Drake apart from other similar platforms or programs in the self-improvement and personal development space?
Two things: Simplicity and effectiveness.
As I touched on above, we’ve developed a program that is easy to follow. Instead of diving into nutrition and dieting, we add brain foods. That’s it. The cool thing about high-leverage habits—they sift out unhealthier habits without you having to do anything extra or rely on willpower.
The Mental Fitness Blueprint has identified 6 of the highest levers to pull for self-improvement. Why pull more levers than needed, right? We want to offer people “first domino” habits—single habits that are so powerful they offer a cascade of additional benefits.
This ties into the effectiveness element. By targeting these 6 essential habits, clients get results that exceed their expectations. If you want to lose weight (a common goal), following the Mental Fitness Blueprint will help you do that while exposing you to other achievements such as increased confidence and emotional intelligence.
Instead of merely achieving one goal, you achieve more goals because you’ve addressed the root problem—your mind! This is what is so exciting about mental freedom. It is the gateway to reaching your potential.
Additionally, I’d like to say that Mind Mastery with Drake is a young business. This may turn people off but for some, it’s exciting to join a community that is still small and intimate. I have no idea where the business will end up, but I know we’re having fun building it and expanding our Mind Mastery Family.
Can you describe the range of services or resources available through your platform, and how they cater to different needs or goals?
We offer 1:1 coaching (with yours truly). If you’re serious about disciplining your mind and taking control of your life, this investment will propel your success. My life fundamentally changed when I first invested in coaching. I invested $10,000 into a coaching program and let me tell ya, it scared the hell out of me. It also fired me up for the first time since leaving collegiate sports. Something inside of me knew I needed to do it. My soul was begging me to get off the sidelines and onto the playing field again.
Additionally, I partner with sports clubs and businesses as their mental fitness coach. I offer group coaching sessions, team presentations, and 1:1 coaching access for the members.
I also give mental fitness presentations to high performers looking to level up in their respective fields.
