Green LED Light Therapy (LLLT), known as “photobiomodulation” or PBM, involves radiation with a wavelength range between 495 and 570nm and a frequency range between 529 and 575 THz. How many wavelengths pass by a fixed point in one second determines a light wave’s frequency. Green light’s frequency is higher than red and lower than violet because it’s in the middle of the spectrum. Green light appears brighter than other spectrum colours. Its short penetration depth can deliver a powerful impact, which I will explain below.

Green light’s affects on the brain and circadian rhythm regulation

Green LED light can help with seasonal affective disorder, jet lag, or sleeping problems since Green is a secondary colour from mixing yellow and blue. It is similar to blue and white light, making you feel more alert when used after waking, depending on your schedule. Please do not use it before you go to sleep. Green light exposure also improves visual attention.

Green light for depression

Daily exposure to green light treats depression symptoms caused by seasonal affective disorder. Bright white/blue light is the standard for treating SAD, and some people with year-round depression find using the light in the morning is helpful.

Dr. Burstein discovers the cause of migraines

Light follows a pathway that begins in the eye and ends in a group of nerve cells that inform the brain that a headache is occurring. The headache worsens when specific light signals hit that group of neurons.

Dr. Burstein realized that the colour of light might matter when he recognized his patients’ headaches were worse on cloudy days.

His research proved a particular narrow band (520nm +/-10) of green light produced smaller electrical signals in the eyes and brain. This precise band of green light’s soothing glow can help migraine sufferers return to their everyday lives. However, exposure to light outside that band can diminish or negate the effects.

Pain relief

It makes your muscles more flexible and is an aid for muscle pain. Green LED light exposure reduces inflammation, eases muscle stiffness and relieves pain in cases of rheumatism, arthritis and muscular pain.

Improved energy levels

Green LED light stimulates the body’s cells and tissues, which also helps improve your energy levels.

Greenlight is effective for redness, rosacea and erythema

Green light causes the small superficial blood vessels beneath the skin to shrink and disappear. The body cleans out the residue. The calming effect of green light wavelengths soothes the skin’s redness, making the blood vessels’ appearance less visible.

Dark circles around the eyes

The skin under the eye is fragile. Green LED Therapy treats dilated capillaries and sagging and

hyperpigmented skin around the eyes, preventing dark circles.

Green light therapy fades or removes hyperpigmentation

Melanin-producing cells, melanocytes, aren’t evenly distributed in the body. Green LED light diffuses non-laser works in the skin’s outer layer, the epidermis. The skin’s melanin absorbs green light therapy. The body breaks down the clumped melanin particles and discards them. Hyperpigmented cells can repair and reorganize. The outer layers of the skin become smoother, with better skin tone. It’s a timely process with LED, taking several weeks or months to see results. It reduces hyperpigmentation issues like Liver spots, sun spots, injury, and acne scarring. I have used it consistently for months and have personally seen benefits, such as a reduction in raised age spots and control of pigmentation on my face. Use sunscreen to speed up and maintain the benefits. Gentle and consistent exfoliation quickens the results and allows the shedding of sun-damaged skin—and healthier replacement of skin cells. The skin is brighter. It’s a natural concealer or foundation.

Freckles – Freckles are harmless, uneven genetic pigmentation. Green LED Light therapy can help lighten freckles but will not make them disappear completely.

UV radiation protection of green light reduces age spots

Green LED light therapy may help reduce the appearance of sun spots, liver spots, discolouration, and hyperpigmentation from UV radiation exposure. Sunscreens combined with green light therapy may provide a barrier against the DNA-damaging rays of UV radiation.

Green light therapy’s shorter wavelengths do not penetrate the pigment-producing cells in the dermal layer of the skin to prevent hyperpigmentation. Excessive sun exposure can cause them to reoccur.

Wound healing

I’ve used the Green LED light to enhance surface wound healing in the warmer months to prevent the sun from discolouring the skin. It enables the skin to repair the affected area by increasing cell growth with a sterilizing function. Green light has some of blue light’s sterilizing properties. Do not recommend this for deep wounds.

Green light for acne

Green light therapy’s sterilizing properties successfully treat the bacteria that cause acne.

Cellulite

Clinical trials have shown that green LED light therapy can effectively reduce fat layers under the skin in a non-invasive manner. It’s an excellent addition to body contouring treatments and reduces the appearance of cellulite.

Regenuscenter.com claims green light therapy benefits the following:

  • Asthma

  • Blood Clots

  • Breaks up congestions and hardened cell masses

  • Colic

  • Destroys germs and viruses and toxic waste matter

  • Exhaustion

  • Hay Fever

  • Heart conditions

  • Hepatic conditions

  • High Blood Pressure

  • Increases or decreases blood pressure by affecting it through the liver

  • Irritability

  • Laryngitis

  • Nervous system and diseases

  • Neuralgia

  • Neuralgic Headaches

  • Sleeplessness

  • Ulcers

Side effects of green LED light therapy

Green LED light therapy has an unwanted side effect: postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. Green light suppresses melanin production. Over-treating a pigmented area could reduce pigment production, causing hypopigmentation and making patients more vulnerable to sun exposure.

Health or dietary issues to restrict use of green light

Chloasma (pregnancy mask), a decolorated mask-like shape on the face or belly, should not be treated with green light therapy. Research still needs to be done on it. Please avoid it until after childbirth.

Vitamin B12 deficiency

Vitamin B12 deficiency causes hyperpigmentation and several other symptoms. It is easily treated by improving B12 absorption or adding it to the diet. Use green LED light therapy after vitamin B12 deficiency is diagnosed and corrected, with the doctor’s approval.

Celiac Disease N– is a severe gluten intolerance to North American wheat and other products. Hyperpigmentation in celiac disease can be seen with large discoloured spots and can cause darkened skin in the underarm area. If hyperpigmentation does not resolve on its own, by restricting gluten from the diet, you can begin using intense green light therapy afterwards.

Health or dietary issues acceptable for green light use

Addison’s disease, Cushing’s disease, or Graves’ disease are hormonal diseases that cause pigmentation problems. It is acceptable for people with these conditions to use green light therapy so long as their healthcare practitioner agrees.

My professional use of green light

In my holistic aesthetics/medical spa, I use a specific wavelength in the green light spectrum to alleviate rosacea and sun spots with IPL Intense Pulse Light. It is a broadband light that gives the same results as a laser with less pain and shorter recovery time. My IPL device sends out multiple wavelengths of pulsating light condensed with a reflective material. IPL treats a range of skin conditions at the same time. Specific skin issues may respond better to IPL or laser. However, unlike Green LED light, it does not remove age spots.

Laser treatment is more intense, and recovery is more prolonged. It can achieve more noticeable results from fewer procedures. Temporary isolation may be required to prevent sun damage from reoccurring. Dermatologists also offer IPL or Laser to their clients. A trained professional performs a medical history to determine when someone qualifies for IPL and Laser light therapy.

Eye safety. Most companies recommend wearing light-blocking eye goggles while receiving LED light therapy. Photosensitive medications can make your eyes more sensitive to light, and people with eye problems may develop eye damage from using light therapy.

Photosensitive products are a concern when using light therapy.

Some foods and medications can increase your sensitivity to light. These include some antidepressants, antibiotics, and acne medications containing retinoic acid or Retin A products. Avoid using home LED light masks while you’re on these medications.

Conclusion

Green Light therapy is being researched and utilized more these days. People are opening up to positive feedback, reviews, and reports. The strength and quantity of LED used affect the treatment outcome as well. Consider that every modality has its drawbacks and precautions. Please take note of photosensitive products that can interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment. Therefore, please follow the usage instructions carefully.
