So many things have changed over the last year and a half, especially as it relates to careers and employment. The statistics are astounding.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Of the 16.9 million people unemployed in July, 9.6 million (57 percent) were unable to work because their employer closed or lost business due to the pandemic. Among the unemployed, the vast majority of those on temporary layoff in July were unable to work because of the pandemic (78 percent).
There is hope for the future despite these statistics. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are projections for various occupations over the next 10 years (2020-2030). The top 3 occupations with the highest percentage of projected growth are personal care and service occupations 21.7%, healthcare support occupations 23.1%, food preparation and serving related occupations 19.6%.
These growth projections tell us there is good news. You can take actions today to determine your career growth and path. Perhaps you are considering a career change or just want to develop or increase your skills and abilities. This is a great time to work on these things.
Assessments
Know thyself. Assessments can really help you learn things about yourself. There are assessments to help you know more about your personality, your values, your strengths, and more.
As a Strengths Champion Certified Coach, I have seen how helping someone understand their talents and strengths can help them identify the best career path, become more confident, and grow in their excitement about their future.
Confidence
We all need it. We can all have it. Confidence is not something you are born with. It is something you can develop and grow in overtime. Sometimes confidence can come along when you practice. We all can feel awkward when trying something new, but the more we do it, the better we get and our confidence naturally grows.
Setting goals for yourself and then taking actions to achieve those goals will help build your confidence.
Resume
Your background, experience, and education are all part of your resume. Being able to construct all of these on a document representing your best self certainly takes some skill.
More importantly, it takes a true understanding of what you bring to the table so you can express it incredibly well. This document needs to cause the person reading it to be so moved they have to speak with you.
The resume won’t get you the job, but it should get you the interview. Keep in mind, whatever you put on the resume must be accurate and true. You don’t ever want an employer to discover you lied on that document and then be faced with dismissal.
These three areas, assessments, confidence, and resumes, are just a few of the components you can be working on now so you are ready for the next step in your career. As with many things in life, getting some assistance can really help you understand embrace all you have to offer.
