When we come across people that seem to have it all, it’s not uncommon to think they must have been born with it all — the talent, the intelligence, the wealth, the support system, great parents, and basically everything! The truth is most successful people are self-made. They made a commitment to build the life they truly wanted and most likely they did it because of some sort of experience or pain they had encountered in life. Maybe it was a problem they noticed others were having and were driven to solve it. Perhaps it was something they struggled with in the past and didn’t want other people to have to go through the same thing.

An important realization that I learned in my late 20s was that pain is a powerful force that drives us to do the impossible. What keeps me committed and driven to fulfill my mission and purpose in life is not the fact that I had a great childhood and amazing life growing up. It was the painful relationships that I had gone through, it was the career and business I didn’t love. It was in a place I didn’t belong. It was the pain of having to repeat the same mistakes repeatedly and not being able to understand what

I was doing wrong. Fifteen years later, working as a coach in the human potential space, I now know that we gain wisdom from moments of failure, not success. Whatever truth is meant for us to be learned in this lifetime, we can live our best life when we awaken it.

Here’s how to really live your best life

People that have it all don’t live a life without pain and disappointment. They choose a life of fulfillment despite the unavoidable pain. And although pain is unavoidable, suffering is a personal choice. Successful people live a life with intention. This is how they have it all:

1. They have clarity about what they want and who they want to become

Having a vision for yourself and what you want in life is vital. Without a destination, there is no real plan to get there. You would be living life on autopilot, landing wherever life decides to take you. Ultimately, you are responsible for who you become.

2. They know their values and live in alignment with them

When you know your values, decisions become simple. Simple, but not necessarily easy. Sometimes it will take a lot of courage to make the right decision and respect your values.

3. They live life consciously and make decisions with intention

Most of the time we think we make our choices consciously. The truth, however, is that the subconscious mind is in control of 90-99% of our decisions. We have been programmed to use the least amount of brain power and energy to make decisions whether big or small. In order to make your decisions more consciously, having self-awareness is required.

4. Most of the time they don’t choose their actions based on their emotions

When you let your amygdala choose your actions for you, that’s not a good formula for success. Our emotional and survival brain was not programmed in a way to let you live your best life but for you to live the “safe life” which we know does not create true fulfillment.

5. They keep their word

When they make promises, especially to themselves, they keep it. They don’t say things they don’t mean. Again, when they speak, they speak with intention.

6. They solve problems effectively

People that have it all encounter more problems than the average person. That’s because they choose to play in the higher league. They experience more risk-taking and more challenges than people that choose the safe path. Therefore, they need to have the skills to tackle those obstacles effectively and a key component is the ability to solve problems.

7. They surround themselves and spend time with people that are better, smarter, and more successful

They know that ultimately, we become the average of the people we spend the most time with. If we want to become better people, we need to hang out with the right crowd. Unsuccessful people are scared to be with smarter, better people because they fear the feeling of being inferior. The truth is the people they choose to be in their network is what keeps them at that level. Successful are the opposite, they are inspired by other people’s passion and success; and that drives them to be even more successful.

8. Live a life full of gratitude

Even the most painful situations in life can bring enlightening and growth into our lives. Successful people are grateful for the good, and the bad, all things that life has brought them. This in turn makes them hopeful, optimistic, humble and as a result, helps them attract more great things and people into their lives.
