Chloe Redmond is a leader in digital marketing, influencer partnerships, and social media management. A chance opportunity to work with Chopra Global (Deepak Chopra’s legacy company) in 2020 that left her with the understanding of how mindfulness and marketing can co-exist.
Since 2016, author Jenifer Sanregret has made her home in Santa Barbara County, where she resides with her family. Alongside her husband, Grant, and their two sons, Vance and Hayes, Jenifer has dedicated years to exploring the diverse landscapes of SBC. This work represents her second foray into writing; following her first publication, “The ABCs of the S.Y.V.,” she was inspired to create a book that reflects the vibrant tapestry of the SBC community through the eyes of every child.
During February, Jenifer will be launching the ‘The ABCs of S.B.C.’ into the world in hopes of sharing her mutual love and joy for Santa Barbara County with locals and visitors alike. Known for its historic landmarks and incredible beaches, this children’s book is filled with all of Santa Barbara County’s favorite locations and hidden gems.
Today, Jenifer's commitment to community and creativity continues to resonate with and inspire families across the Central Coast. When she isn’t immersed in her writing, Jenifer enjoys spending her leisure time at the local farmers market, hiking, or roller skating along the picturesque beach.
In a recent discussion, Chloe Redmond, CEO of Vino Vaquera Consulting, had the opportunity to sit down with Jenifer Sanregret, uncovering the passion behind “The ABCs of S.B.C.”
Hello, Jenifer! It is an honor to have the opportunity to share a piece of your story with the Brainz Magazine community. Thank you for being here with us today. When you’re ready, we would love to start from where your passion for community stems from. What inspired you to write "The ABCs of S.B.C." and how did the concept develop?
I’ve been blown away by the gorgeous scenery and diverse cultures of Santa Barbara County even before we moved here. I still discover new spots to explore—like hidden swimming holes, “secret beaches,” and hikes that lead to breathtaking views and I have lived in SYV for nearly a decade. There’s just endless inspiration and after writing my first book my sons and I started coming up with alphabetical ideas for another book. They encouraged me to write about it so I used a lot of our family explorations!
Our company is big on defining and honoring our creative space(s). Can you walk us through your creative process while drafting the book?
My writing process begins with an extensive brainstorming session and a long alphabetical list that I take everywhere! I compile a list of letters that might not be immediately apparent, exploring creative ways to connect locations with different letters. For instance, instead of simply stating that “L stands for Lizard's Mouth”, I would rather say that “H is for Hike” and weave Lizard’s Mouth into the narrative. That way I have space to show the unique hiking trails while being able to use L for Lompoc!
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the writing and publishing process?
The toughest part of writing my first book was figuring out the right words to keep everything rhyming! It was a fun challenge, but it took a ton of time and was super tricky to be clever with every single line. With the “The ABCs of S.B.C.”, I aimed to make things easier and wanted to pack in as much info about our area in more creative ways.
We love a good dream team story! How did you collaborate with the illustrator, and what was this process like?
I feel so lucky to have Karla Duenas as my illustrator! Her art has such a whimsical vibe, and I knew she would understand my vision. But she truly elevated it by incorporating the cute animals throughout the story. When I send her the manuscripts, I make sure to include as many photo examples as I can. She brings the text to life in such a fun way and kids love the illustrations. She contributed so much to both books and turned my ideas into reality. It would not be the same without her creativity!
What key themes or messages are you hoping to convey through "The ABCs of S.B.C."?, Specifically, what do you hope children and their families will take away from your book?
I want children to see themselves in this book. My main goal with the “The ABCs of S.B.C.” is to foster a sense of inclusivity. I imagine families reading it and seeing familiar places like their hometowns or favorite beaches, sparking a sense of joy. I hope to inspire pride in living in Santa Barbara County and I want readers to feel that this book belongs to them, becoming a treasured part of their childhood and lasting memories.
Now we understand that this is your second book to date, congratulations! Walk us through the experience of your first publishing ‘The ABCs of S.Y.V.,’ paying tribute to the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley.
Thank you! Writing the “The ABCs of the S.Y.V.” took me quite a bit longer than I expected, five years to be exact. Since I was new to the area, I wanted to dive deep into the community to make sure I captured it accurately. I teamed up with locals to gather insights about different spots in Santa Ynez Valley. I learned a ton, like how the big trees in Buellton are called Deodor Cedars, which was a great way to highlight the unique drive and the town itself. After chatting with local friends, I even switched up some letters. Clark from Full of Life Flatbread filled me in on the Walnut Grooves in Los Alamos, which was super helpful because it let me include Los Alamos in the book, and the kids who live there absolutely love that!
What has been the feedback from readers, both children and parents? Any memorable comments?
A few parents mentioned that it felt a bit lengthy (haha), so I made an effort to trim down the “The ABCs of S.B.C.” text! The best feedback I got was from a mom who told me her son and God-Daughter used the “The ABCs of the S.Y.V.” book to learn how to read! That warmed my heart, and I hope it helps even more kids build their reading confidence!
Are you working on any future projects or books at this time? If so, can you share a little about them?
Yes, I am currently developing a book for a local business. While it's still early to reveal details, I am thrilled about the prospect of introducing ABC books to new regions! I aspire to write more books down the line and love it when people suggest topics, I get "You should create the ABCs for (insert topic)," and that enthusiasm truly inspires me!
Are you currently accepting pre-orders for the book? Where will the book be available for the general public to purchase in February?
Pre-sale book orders are now open! Feel free to contact me directly. If you prefer, you can also find the book in local shops and stores throughout SBC.
Thank you for your time today, Jenifer! We would love to end on a positive note of inspiration to your fellow writers. What advice would you give to aspiring authors looking to write children's books?
I appreciate the chance to share my story! I will pass along the same advice I received from a fellow children's book author: write your book as if you are three feet tall! As we get older, we often lose the ability to view stories through a child's eyes, so it is essential to reconnect with that inspiration.
