Emma Liston is best known for her "magical" ability that goes beyond traditional energy healing. As the heart of Being-Magic, she works with both humans and animals, though animals are her true passion. Calling herself an “animal kingdom guardian,” she sees her work as a life purpose, using her unique gifts to bring comfort to those she helps.

Energy healing and quantum healing are both based on the idea that everything in the universe, including our bodies, is made up of energy. But is there a difference between them? And why do some healers use the term “energy healing” while others prefer “quantum healing”? In this article, I’ll explore these terms in more detail and share how I’ve come to understand them.

A person performs Reiki on another lying down, hands hovering above the head with a glowing effect. The setting is a calm, bright room.

Probably one of the best known applications of energy healing is “distance” healing, whereby you can have a healing session without being anywhere near your practitioner. When speaking from a quantum perspective, some of the more common terms such as non-locality, entanglement, and the observer effect, actually help us to understand how distance healing can be possible.

Energy healing focuses on restoring balance to the energy field (or aura) that surrounds and permeates the physical body, reducing the likelihood of dis-ease manifesting physically. Quantum healing builds on this idea by drawing from quantum physics to explain how energy influences our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

In a publication in Global Advances in Health and Medicine (2019), energy healing is defined as “the therapeutic applications of subtle energies”. From a quantum perspective, energy and matter are fundamentally the same everything is energy, including our physical bodies. Matter only appears solid because it vibrates at a slower rate, thus appearing “dense”.

What is a “healer”?

The term “healer” can be a little misleading, yet most energy workers are referred to as healers rather than practitioners or facilitators. In reality, a healer doesn’t actually “heal” their clients each and every one of us is our own healer.

A beautiful quote by Maryam Hasnaa captures this idea perfectly: “A healer does not heal you. A healer is someone who holds space for you while you awaken your inner healer, so that you may heal yourself”.

A healer’s role is to create a space to facilitate helping the client’s body to enter a state of homeostasis where self-healing can occur. In many cases, healers also act as conduits for energy transfer, guiding the healing process through their expertise and various energy techniques. Our bodies are self-healing, self-tuning instruments, and when given the right conditions, they can recover from almost anything.

How does all this energy “stuff” work?

The energy body, also known as the subtle body, consists of multiple etheric layers that protect and interact with the physical body. These layers include the mental and emotional fields, among others. At the core of this system is a central column of energy running along the spine, with spinning energy centres at key points these are commonly known as chakras.

But energy isn’t just about the body; consciousness plays a huge role. Every cell in your body is conscious, and how you speak to yourself matters. What you consume physically, mentally, and emotionally impacts your well-being. It’s not just about food and drink; it’s also about the media you engage with, the relationships you nurture, and the energy you absorb from your environment.

Add to this, your mindset, which is equally powerful. Your beliefs and subconscious programming shape your reality. As the saying goes, “If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right!” The placebo effect is a perfect example of how beliefs influence healing.

Then you add external factors, such as modern lifestyles being rather fast paced, and during non-work time, because you are always connected, you don’t ever fully “unplug” from the world, when the body, mind, and spirit actually need peace and quiet. This leads to stressing all aspects of the body. Many people don’t even breathe properly, and breathwork is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to regulate the nervous system and support the body’s natural healing processes. There are many small, accessible practices that can help shift the body into a state where true healing can begin, but you have to be conscious and listen to what your body needs.

Illustrating the connection between these two healing modalities

Here are a few examples that highlight the commonalities between energy healing and quantum healing, while illustrating their subtle differences in terminology and approach.

Vibration and frequency

In energy healing, every person’s body has its own unique vibration or frequency. When imbalances occur, the energy field becomes disharmonious, potentially leading to illness. From a quantum viewpoint, it’s thought that altering the vibrational frequency of cells and organs (through various methods) can facilitate healing at the cellular level. This is where energy healing techniques like Reiki or Qi Gong align with quantum principles.

The role of the mind in healing

Energy healing often involves clearing blockages in the energy field to help release negative emotions or trauma. Quantum healing, on the other hand, places greater emphasis on the role of consciousness. The mind, through focused intention, can influence energy flow and even alter physical matter. The placebo effect is a striking example of how belief and expectation alone can trigger profound healing.

Distance healing

Energy healing techniques frequently involve practitioners connecting to a client’s energy field remotely, allowing them to channel healing energy without being physically present. In the quantum field, the principle of non-locality suggests that particles can remain instantaneously connected across vast distances. This mirrors the concept of distance healing, where energy transfer occurs beyond the limits of time and space.

The power of intention

In energy healing, intention is used to direct energy toward specific areas of the body, mind, or spirit, often through touch or visualisation. Similarly, from a quantum perspective, it is believed that consciousness influences the behaviour of particles. A healer’s focused intention is believed to be able to shift the energetic state of the recipient, potentially impacting cellular structures, DNA, and overall well-being.

Working with the subtle body/energy field

The concept of the energy field (or aura) is central to many energy healing practices, as it is believed to influence both physical and emotional states. Quantum physics suggests that an underlying energy field, sometimes referred to as the “zero-point field,” connects everything in the universe. Energy healing taps into this interconnected field to restore balance and facilitate healing, reinforcing the idea that all things are energetically linked.

A holistic approach

Energy healing takes a whole-person approach, addressing body, mind, and spirit while recognising that physical ailments often have emotional or spiritual roots. Quantum healing shares this perspective, emphasising that consciousness, thought patterns, and emotions influence the energy field. By shifting one’s energetic state, it is believed that physical health can be transformed.

Transforming limiting beliefs

Energy healing often involves clearing negative thought patterns or emotional blockages that may hinder healing. Quantum healing builds on this concept by acknowledging that thoughts, emotions, and beliefs actively shape our physical reality. By shifting limiting beliefs or patterns in the quantum field, it is believed that individuals can manifest healing and transformation in both body and life.

My conclusion

At its core, energy healing is based on the understanding that everything in the universe, including the human body, is composed of energy that can be influenced and balanced to restore health. Quantum theory/perspectives expand on this by incorporating principles from quantum physics to explain how consciousness and intention can actively shape both energy and physical reality.

Both fields share a fundamental belief in the power of energy, consciousness, and the interconnectedness of all things to facilitate healing. For this reason, I believe that the basis is ultimately the same it just depends on how expansively you work with the energy, for example, simple Reiki can differ from some other quantum healing techniques. In essence, quantum physics has simply given us a framework to understand what energy healers have known for centuries. It has taken what was once considered “woo-woo” and translated it into something more tangible, offering deeper insight into how energy healing modalities truly work, and how we can further increase healing at this level as we step more into the quantum field.
