Understanding Shen: Spirit in Daoist practice
While many are familiar with Qi as life force energy, Shen, or “Spirit,” is less commonly understood. Shen is intricately tied to the emotions of the heart, such as joy, love, indifference, and impatience, and an aspect of Shen is often described as a messenger of the heavenly realm.
Shen resides in the Heart, the seat of mental clarity and emotional peace. When our Shen is clear and undisturbed, the nervous system remains calm, and we experience a profound sense of grounded presence.
Through Shen Gong, we harmonise the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of ourselves, nurturing the interconnected essence of body, mind, and spirit.
Balancing yin and yang
At the core of Daoist philosophy is the interplay of opposites, Yin and Yang, light and shadow, expansion and contraction. This dynamic balance is reflected in both Qigong and Shen Gong, each offering its own approach.
Qigong, now widely practiced, enhances physical health by moving energy (Qi) through the body’s meridian system. Its gentle stretches, fluid movements, and breathwork ease tension strengthen the body and bring a sense of clarity and calm.
Shen Gong, however, works with prenatal Qi, and our initial developmental phase is referred to as the first ancestry. It leads us inward, encouraging us to explore the patterns, emotions, and unconscious tendencies that shape our lives. It’s less about doing and more about being an invitation to meet ourselves exactly as we are.
Bringing together Qigong and Shen Gong can be likened to working with the Self on the level of both Yin and Yang. Qigong addresses the Yang aspect, focusing on movement, action, and outward expression, while Shen Gong nurtures the Yin, guiding us into stillness, reflection, and inner transformation. Together, they offer a complete system of balance and harmony.
Cultivating a luminous spirit
A cornerstone of Shen Gong is the cultivation of Shen Ming, or “luminous spirit.” Just as balancing Yin and Yang integrates the outward movement of Qigong with the inward stillness of Shen Gong, Shen Ming arises as a result of this harmonious process. When the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our being come into alignment, the clarity of Shen Ming naturally emerges, illuminating the path of transformation and connection.

The skill of the self
Shen Gong has been called “the skill of the Self,” and for good reason. It’s about uncovering who we truly are by bringing our unconscious habits, reactions, and wounds into awareness. This inner work allows us to heal and grow.
As we engage with Shen Gong, we often experience emotional releases such as tears, laughter, or a sense of relief. These moments of release are the body’s way of letting go of energy tied to old experiences and protective patterns.
This isn’t just a mental process; it’s deeply somatic. Shen Gong combines movement with felt experience and inner inquiry, helping us process and release stuck energy through the body.
