Liz Reddish, Kinesiology Professional, Trainer and Mentor

Introduce yourself! Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to start your own business in the health and wellbeing industry?

Hi, my name is Liz Reddish, and I am the founder and owner of Devon Well House. I am a Functional Kinesiology Professional (CNHC, IKC & KF reg) and Touch For Health (TFH) Kinesiology Instructor and Mentor (IKC, KF reg) based in the beautiful countryside of South Devon in the UK.

I was first introduced to Kinesiology in a desperate attempt to find someone who could help me. I was in my early 20s, and after a cascade of big life events, my body shut down, and I was diagnosed with ME (Chronic Fatigue). I had exhausted all of the conventional and many unconventional approaches to healthcare that were available to me, and nothing was seemingly helping. It was with utter despair and desperation that I agreed to try Kinesiology, a modality that I had never heard of before, let alone could pronounce!

Within a week of my first treatment, when I was encouraged to adjust my diet to eliminate foods that were depleting my energy and take some supplements, my bloating subsided, and my chronic headache had eased. I couldn’t believe that the feedback from my muscles was able to provide such clarity about what I needed. Each session, we explored another layer, adjusting my posture, supporting my emotions, and balancing my gut health. Before long, I was experiencing health like I had never experienced it before. Long-standing hormonal issues, knee and hip pain, depression, and bowel issues were all improving. Being what I can only describe as an open-minded skeptic, I felt compelled to train in it to try and prove it right or prove it wrong! Well, as you might have guessed, I now believe wholeheartedly in Kinesiology, and it’s my passion and purpose to share it with the world.

How do you approach working with clients, and what sets your health and wellbeing services apart from others in the industry?

My work is all about supporting my clients back to a place of safety and balance within so that they can realise their full health and well-being potential. We are energetic beings who are constantly in communication with ourselves, others, and the wider world. The external ‘noise’ and disruption to our senses create stress in our bodies and a disconnect from ourselves. This ultimately results in ‘dis-ease,’ and if left unsupported, chronic health conditions set in. Through the art of muscle monitoring, Kinesiology offers a unique way to go beneath the symptoms and the conscious realms of our experience to access the innate wisdom within, helping us to uncover the root cause of our condition.

I work with the Traditional Chinese Five Element Theory to guide us to a deeper understanding of where the imbalances lie. The body (through muscle monitoring) will pick out the tools and techniques it needs (from a range of modalities that I have mastered over the past 20 years in practice, i.e., kinesiology, massage, mindset, nutrition, movement, and wellness practices) to support the body back into balance so that it can heal. This process cuts through the external noise and opinions of others and empowers my clients back into communication and connection with themselves so that they can take back responsibility for their health and wellbeing.

Working in this way means that the process is completely guided by the feedback from my client’s body, meaning that every session is different and unique to them. With the support of my professional expertise and experience, we can build balance, resilience, and vitality, giving them the freedom to live to their full potential.

How do you handle clients who are skeptical or resistant to holistic health practices?

I welcome all types of clients to my practice, from those passionate about all things alternative to those who feel rather forced to give it a go out of desperation to find something that supports them. I’ve always considered myself someone who bridges the gap between the Eastern and Western medical models. The truth is, I had an extremely conventional upbringing, and it wasn’t until I experienced the world of energy medicine for myself that I could begin to grasp what it was all about and how it could help me and others.

I take real pleasure in meeting people where they are at and inviting them on a journey with me to explore, challenge, and feel into what it can offer them. There’s no judgment, expectation, or attachment to the outcome, merely an opportunity to experience something different and then decide if it resonates. We are all unique, and it’s as much about the connection that I have with my clients as it is with the modality that I am practicing.

Because of my personal need to understand things, I continue to learn the theory behind my practices and feel immense joy in sharing my knowledge with others. This is where my teaching qualification was born, and now I love passing my knowledge and skills onto others and empowering self-responsibility for all.

Can you share a success story from one of your clients and how your health and well-being services helped them achieve their goals?

I have had the privilege of witnessing my clients, and students experience huge transformations over the many years that I have been practicing and teaching. From the full recovery of a life-inhibiting shoulder dislocation that resulted in extensive nerve damage and muscle atrophy to overcoming debilitating anxiety and burnout that resulted in unemployment to supporting my client back to full health and vitality and being able to make the choices that have led to a career change that fulfills her potential and purpose.

Much of my work now supports the processing of trauma held in the body. An example of this was when I worked with a client who was experiencing post-traumatic stress from a traumatic birth.

Fortunately, she and her baby were medically safe, and yet she experienced constant flashbacks and fluid retention for a few weeks afterward. She reached out for support, and her body requested a technique that supports the release and processing of trauma in a particular postural position. For her, it was her birthing position, meaning that every time she lay on her back with her knees bent, her body was triggered back into the trauma that she experienced giving birth. When the body was safe and supported to let the energy of the trauma go, the body started mimicking the labor contractions, and my client was able to release the emotional and physical energy that had remained in her circuit. When the processing ended, she felt deep peace, and her body released 8 lbs of fluid over the next 24 hours.

What strategies do you use to motivate clients to make lasting lifestyle changes?

This is such a great question because our industry is growing so rapidly and it is bursting with so much advice and pressure to have the best body, be the best boss, create the perfect work-life balance, take this supplement, do this workout, etc.

The moment that our nervous system becomes triggered by ‘stress,’ its capacity for creativity is shut down, and we default to survival. Digestive processes are inhibited, hormone production and balance become dis-regulated, and emotional overwhelm triggers anxiety and cognitive dysfunction. Therefore, I take the time to support my clients to quieten the external ‘noise’ and start to learn to connect with and feel into their bodies. This process can be incredibly new and life-changing for people because as a society, we have become so disconnected from our bodies that we remain in our heads the whole time. So when clients start to lean into their discomfort and dis-ease, meeting themselves with compassion and care, they can start to learn and understand what the body needs to return it to balance and safety so that it can ultimately heal.

This new relationship that clients experience is from the ‘inside out,’ giving them back their power and connection that supports a step-by-step, layer-by-layer approach to wellness. They set clear goals or intentions for each session that we explore together energetically through the biofeedback that we gain through muscle testing. So often, when the neural and biochemical pathways are so deeply embedded in the system, it becomes really challenging to override them with new, more supportive behaviours. The beauty of Kinesiology is that we can work directly with the feedback from the body to determine where these restrictions and imbalances lie, and with the support of structural, energetic, nutritional, or emotional tools and techniques, we can rebalance the body specifically to align with the energy of these goals, giving clients a far greater chance of reaching their potential and sticking to daily practices that support them.

How do you continue to grow and develop your own skills and knowledge in the health and wellbeing industry, and what new offerings or services do you have planned for the future?

‘Living in practice’ is my greatest commitment to myself and my community. What I mean by this is that I soon learned that the more I know, the more I realise that I don’t know.

It’s a beautiful story that unfolds daily with new connections, new experiences, and new opportunities for learning and growth. I have always been curious to understand the ‘why’ of things, and I believe that our health and wellbeing are at the heart of that. I have witnessed firsthand how our experience within ourselves reflects on our outer world.

This was my motivation to become a Touch For Health Kinesiology Instructor, teaching the Synthesis that offers the foundation to all kinesiology faculties as well as providing a wonderful opportunity for laypeople to learn tools and techniques to support themselves and their friends and families. I believe that teaching something provides the ultimate test of one’s own knowledge.

Watching my students experience the ‘wow’ moments of this work and challenging me to keep learning and growing is such a privilege and joy. This exchange is also felt in my work as a mentor, working one-to-one online with fellow practitioners who are looking for support, encouragement, and accountability to enhance their practice through personal and professional development opportunities.

Having been on this journey of personal and professional growth and development for many years, learning through my own health challenges and from the challenges of others, I now feel guided to take what I have learned and gift it to others. This September, I am launching my new ‘passion project,’ the Holistic Health Network.

The vision: I intend to create a safe and nourishing space for Health and Wellbeing Professionals to come together for support, education, and connection. I am doing this because I have experienced firsthand the challenges of being a self-employed health and wellbeing practitioner and feel that collaboration and community are needed now more than ever to support us all to shine our lights even brighter as we support the wider community. “Because your tribe affects your vibe.” When we are supported and resourced from within, our capacity for helping others flows with ease and integrity. This online community will meet up online once a week and offer:

  • An opportunity to connect and share with like-minded people

  • Self-help tools and techniques to raise vibration and balance mind, body, and soul

  • A short presentation/guided work to inspire, educate, and support a group discussion/ exercise that will support personal and professional growth and development

  • Guest presenters to inspire a new and fresh conversation

  • A safe space to be seen, heard, and held

  • A weekly fix of fun!

  • An opportunity for members to promote their businesses through the community WhatsApp

My intention is to also provide opportunities for in-person events where we can exchange our skills, enhance our friendships, and share good food, conversation, and opportunities for collaboration.
