As we women over 50 continue our journey to seasoned citizenship, we find ourselves accumulating wisdom, experience, and stories that are too valuable to keep to ourselves. For many of us, it’s a natural inclination to want to pass on this treasure trove of knowledge, especially to the next generation. I like to call us ‘Seasoned Citizens,’ as we have traveled many paths, weathered various storms, and have come out on the other side stronger and wiser… At least most of us have. That’s a story for another time. At any rate, it is now time to share those lessons with younger women to guide them through the twists and turns that life inevitably brings. Just keep in mind that I am just touching on these topics, and most of them can be a full chapter all by themselves.

Life’s expectations

First and foremost, it is essential to let younger women know that life rarely goes according to plan, and that’s okay. We have learned to embrace the unexpected, adapt to changes, and keep moving forward. We have learned that there will be highs and lows, victories, and setbacks. Yet, each experience shapes us into who we are and prepares us for what is yet to come. Life is a journey. I personally learned that when life took me through some hoops, at first, I cried profusely, I was devastated, and I lamented about why this horrible thing happened to me. I recognized that I could not do it alone, so I turned it over to God and got through it with the help He sent my way through family and other supporters and their prayers. I started journaling and later wrote a book about the experiences. It was a therapeutic move. I learned that whatever obstacles that may come my way, and they will come, they are simply lessons to learn.

Relationships

Ah…relationships. They are the rollercoaster of emotions and the tangled webs we weave. The best advice I can think of is to ‘Trust your gut’. Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is. Never underestimate the power of open and honest dialogue. Communication is key. However, some people may come into our lives with their own agenda and no sense of communication. We must ask God for discernment. There are many old adages to cling to, such as, ‘When they show you who they are, believe them. Also, remember that it’s better to be alone and fabulous than to be stuck in mediocre relationships. Never compete with anyone. Just know that the only person you should compete with is the person you were the day, week, month or year that you were before. In marriage, they say that the key to a happy marriage is good communication, and separate bathrooms and closets. Ok, I admit it…They didn’t say it…I said it.

Finances

Money matters can be challenging, but they don’t have to be. Start saving early, learn how to live within your means, and don’t shy away from financial literacy. Invest in yourself both literally and figuratively. You can start small and learn to not depend on what you saved. Forget that it’s there. And if all else fails, just remember this…you can’t put a price on good skincare and finding time to rest, reflect, and start again if necessary. Learn to appreciate thrifting. It is one of my favorite pastimes. You still get your shopping therapy on and in many cases, you become more creative in your fashion intelligence.

Career

In the professional realm, confidence is your greatest asset. Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself, take risks, and pursue your passions. Never let age define you. Some of the most successful women didn’t hit their stride until later in life. Keep learning, keep growing, and keep kicking those glass ceilings! Celebrate milestones and take time to acknowledge your achievements, no matter how small they are. Milestones reached are testaments to your resilience, your strength, and determination. Celebrate You!

Menopause

Ah! Men-o-pause…the hormonal rollercoaster no one warns you about. Embrace the hot flashes, the mood swings, and the random bouts of crying. They are just proof that you’re a force to be reckoned with. Invest in a good portable fan, stay hydrated, get some exercise, stock up on chocolate, and remember that ‘this, too, shall pass. Oh yeah, don’t forget your herbs! The right combination of herbs can help you manage those uncomfortable bouts of personal summers and anger management.

Mindfulness matters. Find moments of just being still and connecting with God. Incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily routine to cultivate peace and tranquility. Try deep breathing exercises or find peaceful walking paths. I love walking around our community lake where I often see swans, ducks, and turtles. Drink herbal teas and Steer clear of smoking and alcohol. They are not good for your skin or your mental health. Talk to your healthcare specialist and find a nutritionist to determine what other steps might work best for you.

Stay fashionably fabulous

Explore your personal style and embrace fashion as a form of self-expression. Experiment with different looks, colors, and textures that make you feel confident and empowered. You don’t have to copy someone else’s style. You don’t have to compare your beauty with someone else’s beauty. You are your own kind of beauty. Embrace change as a natural part of life’s journey. Always take care of your body and nourish it. It’s the only place you have to live. Be your own kind of fabulous!

Embrace technology

Never shy away from technology. Embrace it as a tool for connection, learning, and exploration. Stay connected with loved ones through video calls, explore new apps and gadgets, and leverage online platforms for learning and entertainment. Technology is here to help, and it’s here to stay. Don’t get left behind. Technology is not evil. I believe it is what you make it. Use it.

Find your village: Embrace sisterhood

There will always be those who just won’t like you and may even find fault no matter what you say or do. Don’t waste your time trying to figure out why. That only sucks the joy out of living. It is their loss. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and inspire you to be your best self. I’ve arrived at a point in life where I have no place for negative people. I have learned to walk away when my worth is not recognized. Life is too short to waste a minute wondering why someone does not accept me. I don’t even question why. I’ve learned how to smile and walk in the direction of peace of mind.

Always trust in the power of true female friendship. There is nothing quite like the bond between women. Surround yourself with supportive women who uplift you and inspire you. Share experiences, wisdom, and laughter with those who celebrate your journey and champion your growth. These are the women who lift you up when you feel down, encourage you when you’re feeling discouraged, pray with you when you feel lost, and show you the love and respect you deserve.

Don’t forget to practice self-compassion. Be gentle with yourself, especially during those moments of self-doubt or uncertainty. Treat yourself with the same kindness and compassion you would offer a dear friend. Most of all, always remember that you are worthy of love and acceptance just as you are…unless you are mean and hateful. If that’s the case, learn to change for the better.

Travel often: Explore new adventures

Explore new cultures. Expand your horizons. Don’t get stuck in discomfort. Embrace a spirit of adventure and openness to new experiences. Travel to a new destination, go camping or glamping, try a new hobby and embrace the unknown with courage and curiosity. Embrace the unknown and the beauty of growth and transformation that comes with learning as you travel. Live your life and find time to laugh along the way. You can never underestimate the power of laughter. Laughter is truly the best medicine, so travel with it always.

Strengthen your relationship with God

Seek Him first each morning and carry Him with you through your day. Cultivate a spirit of gratitude. Start and end each day with a heart full of gratitude. Reflect on the blessings that come your way no matter how small, and let gratitude be your guiding light through life’s ups and downs. Find meaningful ways to give back to your community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. Whether it’s volunteering, mentoring, or supporting charitable causes, find joy in serving others and making a difference in the world. Be the light.

Conclusion

So, in conclusion, dear younger women, as you navigate the winding road of life, know that you’re never alone. Women over 50 are here to be your guiding light, your confidantes, and your partners in crime. So, embrace the journey, cherish the lessons learned, and above all else, live your life unapologetically and authentically. After all, the best is yet to come. Until next time…
