Making cocktails at home is more than just mixing drinks. It’s an opportunity to showcase your creativity, elevate your hosting game, and even build a strong social media presence. Whether you’re impressing guests, boosting your Instagram feed, or exploring non-alcoholic options, this guide has everything you need. It’s complete with expert tips, inspiration, and must-have tools.
1. Start with your base: Alcoholic or non-alcoholic
The first step in creating stunning cocktails is choosing your foundation.
Alcoholic options: A well-stocked bar includes essentials like vodka, gin, rum, tequila, and whiskey. For added versatility, consider aperitifs like Aperol, vermouths, liqueurs like St-Germain, and bitters.
Non-alcoholic options: With brands like Seedlip, Ritual, Pathfinder, Aplos, and Lyre’s, crafting sophisticated mocktails is easier than ever. Don’t overlook non-alcoholic wines like TÖST or Prima Pavé and non-alcoholic beers like Athletic Brewing, Peroni 0.0, and Guinness 0.0. Lastly, don’t forget about N/A bitters like All The Bitter and Seasn, which are the best in the market (in my humble opinion). These options are perfect for anyone exploring a sober or low-alcohol lifestyle.

2. Invest in stylish and functional bar tools
Great cocktails require the right equipment. A well-chosen bar set is both functional and aesthetically pleasing for social media.
Essentials: Equip yourself with a jigger, Boston shaker, Hawthorne and julep strainers, a tea strainer, a muddler, and a bar spoon.

3. Choose brands that reflect your style
Your choice of spirits and mixers can reflect your values, personality, and aesthetic.
Local & artisanal: Supporting craft distilleries and sustainable brands adds a personal touch to your drinks. Favorites include New York Distilling Co., Astraea Gin, and ALB Vodka.
Mainstream excellence: Trust reliable industry leaders like Tanqueray, Ketel One, and Johnnie Walker.
Â
4. Select glassware that enhances presentation
Glassware is essential for both taste and visual appeal.
Classics: Keep timeless options on hand, like coupe glasses for martinis or Collins glasses for highballs.
Unique pieces: Add character with vintage tumblers or colorful stemware. Check out local antique shops or retailers like CB2 for stylish finds.
Pro tip: Use creative garnishes and vibrant backdrops to make your drinks stand out on Instagram or TikTok.

6. Build a library of cocktail books
Books provide both education and inspiration, making them essential for any cocktail enthusiast.
For beginners: The Bar Book by Jeffrey Morgenthaler covers essential techniques.
For inspiration: Death & Co: Modern Classic Cocktails features iconic recipes and stunning photography.
For gifting: Meehan’s Bartender Manual is a perfect blend of storytelling and expertise.

7. Master the art of presentation
Presentation is just as important as flavor when crafting stunning cocktails.
Classic garnishes: Lemon twists, mint sprigs, and olives are timeless favorites.
Creative additions: Edible flowers, dehydrated fruit wheels, or custom-stamped ice cubes add flair.
Pro tip: Style your cocktails using props like fresh ingredients, cocktail books, or natural light to create visually compelling content.
Â
Bonus tip: Practice makes perfect
Whether you’re perfecting your garnish game or creating bold new recipes, practice is key. Experiment with different spirits, mixers, and techniques to find your signature style.

Chris Cardone, Beverage Consultant, Chief Mixologist & Public Speaker
In 2015, Chris took a year-long break from alcohol, recognizing that his dependence was harming his life. After nine months without alcohol, he realized his fears about quitting were unfounded and that he was becoming a better person overall, which led him to quit drinking permanently. However, he noticed the lack of non-alcoholic options in bars and the skepticism towards a sober bartender. People suggested he change careers, doubting his ability to stay sober or create balanced cocktails. This inspired him to launch Continuous Beverage Solutions, with the mission to educate, empower and inspire people to decide for themselves how, when and why they drink, ensuring everyone feels included.
