Communicating communicatively is about genuinely connecting with others to foster clarity, understanding, and meaningful exchange. It involves being conscious of your words, tone, and non-verbal cues to ensure your message resonates. Engaging with someone verbally, through written words, or visually is about actively listening, empathizing, and adapting to the audience's needs. Essentially, it's not just about what you say but how effectively you convey it, so it becomes a two-way process of connection and understanding.

I am frequently amazed at how different people view the same scenario.
Communicating effectively across a group requires specialist understanding and learning techniques such as 'sense making' to define the issue to ensure all team members are aligned, pulling in the same direction to attain desired outcomes, avoiding unintended consequences, and understanding when to seek support. My solution to this is twofold: to implement and support a 'sensemaking' & active listening environment for deeper understanding, which underpins high-performing teams and outcomes.
Active listening and sensemaking are deeply intertwined skills that enhance understanding and communication. Active listening involves focusing, understanding, and thoughtfully responding to what someone is saying rather than simply hearing them. It creates a safe space for open dialogue, where the speaker feels genuinely heard and valued. This approach is essential for building trust and fostering collaborative relationships.
Sensemaking takes this a step further by encouraging reflection, analysis, and the integration of diverse perspectives to uncover more profound meaning. It also asks the right questions to address gaps in understanding.
When combined with active listening, sensemaking helps individuals and groups navigate complex situations, identify patterns, and find clarity amidst uncertainty. By listening attentively and engaging in sensemaking, you can better empathize with others, address conflicts constructively, and co-create solutions that reflect shared understanding.
Active listening and sensemaking transform communication into a tool for connection, insight, and problem-solving, making them invaluable in personal, professional, and community settings. The steps above are not easy. In many ways, they clash with traditional modes of communication and need to be implemented and used in a planned, systematic manner to bring your people along with you on the learning journey. In this new era of machine learning and Artificial Intelligence, whereby Artificial Intelligence disrupts 'expertise,' sensemaking and improved modes of communication will become essential to building enhanced understanding and harnessing both AI and human potential in an optimal, ethical, and effective manner.
The most significant impact lies in bridging the gap between human and AI collaboration by fostering environments prioritizing sensemaking and active listening. As AI continues to reshape industries and expertise, these skills will be pivotal in ensuring ethical, effective, and inclusive decision-making.
This approach can revolutionize teamwork in workplaces by aligning diverse perspectives and navigating complexities with deeper understanding. In community settings, it can build trust, empathy, and resilient networks, while in education, it equips future generations to thrive in an AI-enhanced world.
Ultimately, the ripple effects can extend across personal, professional, and societal realms, enhancing problem-solving, innovation, and human connection.
