Coco-Cola Recall in Europe Over Safety Concerns

Coco-Cola customers in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands are being warned that some products are being recalled.

The drinks in question are being flagged to the public as they contain "higher levels" of a chemical called chlorate, reports BBC News. This is a chemical that is found in the production of fireworks and disinfectants, say experts.

"Independent expert analysis concludes that any associated risk for consumers is very low," a spokesperson told the BBC.

The issue came to light during routine testing at a Coca-Cola production factory in Ghent, Belgium. The company then withdrew the majority of unsold stock from shops and continues to remove the rest.

However, five product lines with potentially higher levels of chlorate had also been shipped to the UK and already sold. The company says that it has not received any customer complaints from within the UK but has "alerted the authorities on this matter and will continue to collaborate with them."

A Coca-Cola spokesperson added that it "considers the quality and safety of its products as its top priority".
