Often, celebrities' relationships with alcohol and addiction are largely reported on during the midst of addiction. But life after addiction, and in recovery is important. Many famous faces are open, and more importantly incredibly proud, about their recovery journey and sobriety.

The pandemic and subsequent periods of lockdown have been an incredibly testing year for most people, none more so than those suffering from addiction. According to Kayla Gill, Content Director at Recovery.com, “In the early days of the pandemic, the surge in the need for addiction treatment services was also accompanied by a decrease in their availability. Over half of the facilities surveyed by the U.S. National Council for Behavioral Health said they had to close their behavioral health treatment programs, while 65% had to turn clients away.” With increased relapse risks that come from isolation and stress, it’s never been more important to focus on stories of recovery.
This article will celebrate the celebs that are in recovery and aims to inspire anyone considering their own road to recovery in the new year.
Read on to discover their stories, discussing support from Alcoholics Anonymous or time in a rehab facility in America and how wellness helped their journey and their achievements in recovery, which show the power of sobriety.
Why do many celebrities develop an addiction?
Much like Olympic athletes who are in recovery, the intense pressure to perform in the spotlight comes with access to and the encouragement to indulge in potentially addictive activities. From alcohol and medication to eating disorders or anxiety disorders, the lifestyles of the rich and the famous come with caution.
Typically, celebrities' lives are bookmarked with social events and parties. With this comes easy access to alcohol and drugs. But these more common addictions aren’t the only kinds suffered by musicians, actors, and famous personalities.
The intense pressure of being always visible can lead to many coping mechanisms and the formation of addiction. Scrutiny and negativity follow the famous, and reporting on addictions such as:
Medication or drug abuse (both prescribed or illegal)
Anxiety disorders
Depression
All of these draw more attention to the addictions, rather than removing the triggers or pressures.
Celebrities recovering from alcohol or drug addiction is far less focused on than those in the throes of addiction. However, many celebrities have celebrated their sobriety, marking several years and even decades in recovery.
5 inspirational celebrity addiction recovery stories
While no recovery follows the same path, and relapses can happen, sharing success stories is important motivation, as well as showing the possibilities of life after addiction. Deciding to quit drinking is no mean feat.
Inspirational celebrities that have shared their recovery stories
Bradley Cooper
Bradley Cooper has been sober since he was 29. Now 46, Cooper has lived over 15 years in recovery. Of his decision to abstain from alcohol, he told GQ "If I continued it, I was really going to sabotage my whole life."
Years after this interview, In what he described as a cathartic experience, Cooper directed and starred in ‘A Star Is Born’ alongside Lady Gaga. In this film, his performance of a musician battling, and sadly succumbing to, an alcohol addiction earned him an Academy Award nomination.
Cooper luckily could recognise his addictive tendencies and was able to lead a sober life before it affected his personal and professional life. The power of sobriety for him can be seen in his acting and directing, not least in his incredibly personal portrayal of someone living through an addiction he faced.
Brad Pitt
Cooper’s doesn’t only serve as an inspiration to us but also to fellow celebrities. Brad Pitt credited Bradley Cooper as a huge support with embracing sobriety after his battle with alcoholism.
Despite owning a vineyard, Pitt spent over a year in the Alcoholics Anonymous programme after his very public split with Angelina Jolie. He found the all-male recovery group to be a safe space with no judgement which, alongside Cooper’s example, helped his recovery.
In fact, Pitt has said that “every day has been happier ever since” becoming sober.
Jamie Lee Curtis
Jamie Lee Curtis celebrated over 20 years of sobriety this year. At 35, after surgery to remove her ‘puffy eyes’, she formed an opiate addiction. This, paired with alcoholism, became a decade-long substance abuse period.
Both her parents suffered from alcoholism, and she lost a brother to heroin abuse. Noting that she was “one of the lucky ones” in the Huffington Post, she managed to avoid the hereditary addiction tendencies.
Now celebrating over two decades of sobriety, Curtis is proud to have broken a familial cycle of addiction.
Robert Downey Junior
Robert Downey Junior has been sober since 2001. Rising to fame at a young age, he was surrounded by drugs and even influenced to partake by his Father.
After being arrested multiple times in the 90s, and even spending six months in jail he attended a treatment facility in California. Since then, he’s worked with holistic therapies and practices yoga and Wing Chun kung fu to refocus his attention. With his huge role within the Marvel Universe as Iron Man, his sobriety has certainly aided his success.
Kristin Davis
With her return as ‘clean cut’ Charlotte in the reboot of hit Sex And The City imminent, it may be surprising to fans that Davis had a long battle with alcohol. Although this battle was in private for much of her life and career, in an interview with Health she revealed that she was a recovering alcoholic.
Though the show is famous for the four main women enjoying a Cosmo, Davis acknowledges that her recovery still includes occasional bad days, and she wouldn’t risk a relapse for the sake of a colourful cocktail.
Finding the right recovery route
Addiction doesn’t discriminate. Addiction disorder can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, income or perceived level of ‘success’. Similarly, recovery doesn’t always follow a set path.
Being surrounded by supporting figures, whether that’s friends, support groups, or medical professionals is really important in recovery. Finding a treatment programme, like residential rehab or medication-assisted treatment and focussing attention on mental health and wellbeing all work in tandem to pave a smooth road to recovery.
Choosing sobriety means you can set boundaries and achieve goals, both in relation to your recovery and larger dreams and aspirations. Like the celebrities here, don’t let addiction get in the way of your dreams and harness the power of sobriety for the new year!
