If you focus on people, you will exponentially grow your business! Let me explain… Business can sometimes feel difficult – there are highs and lows, there are fires to put out, mistakes are made, problems need to be solved – but at the heart of it, business is very simple. You generate leads, convert leads into customers, and service those customers (can be a service or product).

A black and white photo of people inside the business room.

To do those three things, as an entrepreneur/manager, we rely on People, Process, and Product. Ultimately, the customer receives the product, so it’s gotta be good. The processes we have in place can create efficiencies that improve productivity and better margins. The people (ourselves and employees) are the ones that, ultimately, make the biggest impact.

The people are the ones that can affect the processes and products we have. They are the innovators and problem solvers. If you have the right people, with the right training and working towards a similar vision, they can create the right products and processes and implement it all to generate leads, convert leads, and service them.

If you optimize your team, you exponentially improve your business. Most businesses look at how they can cut costs or create more automations and focus on maximizing the bottom line: the profit. I tell you this, if you focus on optimizing the people around you, profits will improve even moreso! That is why human capital management has become such a hot topic subject over the last few years. Because it works. It’s the best way to improve your business.

Now when I talk about optimizing, I’m talking about 3 things:

Efficiency

Giving your employees the resources to allow them to express their skills and knowledge without interruption. Giving them access to systems that allow them to track their production, decrease time it takes to do a single task, and making work more enjoyable. For example, if your company makes outbound cold outreaches, you can give your employees a CRM to track their progress and better organize their prospects, you can give your employees an autodialer that allows them to make calls without manually dialing and make several calls at the same time. That would allow your employees to increase their production in a fraction of the time. With that time, you could allow your employees to take more breaks; improving their moral and enjoyment.

Responsibility

I am a firm believer that when someone feels a sense of responsibility, they step up to a new personal level. Probably just like you when you started your business or were promoted to a managerial/executive position, you stepped up! Well, our team is the same way. Now I preface responsibility with the inclusion of two things; patience and support. If you give someone the responsibility does to something they have never done before, they will need to be shown how and given the opportunity to make mistakes. Support is also training your employees to make sure they are set up for success. When I work with entrepreneurs and they tell me that they tried giving more responsibility and it didn’t work it usually comes down to one thing; they never showed that person how they wanted the job to be done and didn’t give them the proper training/feedback. That is what I mean by support, making sure they get the training they need to thrive with that responsibility. At that point, they will completely self-sufficient. This may take a little bit more time and energy up front, but will free up tons of your time in the long run!

Culture

making sure your culture is aligned with your vision and core values. Have you ever seen great sports teams with the best talent not win anything? I believe success doesn’t come from have the best people, but the people that work the best together. And the people that work the best together are ones that have bought into the same vision and have similar values. That is why the most important thing a leader of a company can do is have a very clear and ambitious vision. Once you have that vision, adopt the values that you need to get there. Once you have those two things, you only train and hire people based on those values and if they align with the vision. This creates a cohesive team all working towards the same objective because they all WANT to, not because they HAVE to.

Once you’ve created the culture to actualize your vision and you’ve given your employees the resources to be efficient and self-sufficient, you will have an optimized team that will increase performance across all areas of your business. Which will ultimately increase your profit. I always look at low or negative profits as symptoms of a bigger problem and that problem usually stems from your people, process, and product.

The people are the best to optimize because they will improve the other two! That is why our employee are now referred to as out human capital. Human capital is the most valuable asset any company can have because it is the most dynamic. What you put in can be multiplied back. And as long as you are investing in your team, giving them more responsibility, and growing a thriving culture; your team will stay with you for the long run.

Remember; if you’re a business owner, manager, or executive; you are a leader. The best sign of a great leader is how many leaders they create. The best way to create leaders is to follow those 3 steps. That’s why I love to help people level up their leadership and implement the right strategies because then it causes a ripple effect in their companies. And that’s what any business person is doing: solving problems that create a ripple in the world.

Focus on people because it’ll create the greatest ripple of all!
